Thread 10 for the tryers.

All welcome for support and tips and chat about controlling our relationship with alcohol.

Previous threads knocking around.

No rules except we don't do politics about the C word. And because there is so many other C word chats we ask that we limit mention of it once a day for things that are worrying, followed up by a positively Pollyanna point about something nice about the situation.

Bookskark - do you keep track of units per week? It’s another way to see your own improvement. Even if you did have wine with your chinese, you likely drank less than the week before?

waterandlemonjuice · 13/05/2020 12:30

@ModConnie, I feel shit generally! 4 of those days were in the garden, with dh, laughing, happy, long weekend, all good but the last was a (minor) row, angry drinking, late night, followed by a hangover and regret. So that’s what I really don’t want to be doing.

Well done to you though, half a bottle is moderating imo, I’d be very happy with 18 units. I dare not count mine for last week tbh. I did 16 days AF in April so yes, I’d like to improve upon that.

waterandlemonjuice · 13/05/2020 12:32

Oh and it’s always decent wine I drink, not that that makes any difference to the quality of the hangover!

ModConnie · 13/05/2020 21:40

most of that drinking sounds good - angry drinking is not fun. Not even really at the time annoyingly.

Having a jug of water on the table makes me ease off a bit - I could definitely drink a bottle and a half quite easily but if I have water that is no harder to get to, then that helps. And Hangover Fear. I really really hate them. They ruin me for a day and a half.

So there are, including today, 19 days left - so definitely achievable to beat or match April.

I do remember doing my dry spell and I think what made it work was a holistic view of health rather than “no alcohol”. So I decided to eat better, do more exercise, not drink alcohol, get 2L water a day in and get more sleep. I slipped in temporary sobriety and covered it up with other things so it wasn’t my sole miserable focus. I don’t know if that approach would help. Healthy week rather than AF week.

And I am SURE that decent wine makes for a better hangover. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! especially white

waterandlemonjuice · 14/05/2020 18:23

@ModConnie good point about holistic view. I’m on day 3 AF this week, including today, day 7 in May and day 68 in 2020.

Really was tempted earlier as feel a bit fed up today but I resisted so I’m drinking water. There’s nothing that won’t be made worse by drinking too much anyway! Depressant etc etc, anxiety etc etc!

I hope you’re doing ok.

ModConnie · 16/05/2020 10:14

Everything good with me - v good point about drinking making negative things worse. It’s 100% true. It just enhances my misery / negative mood if I drink without it being for fun. I don’t know why it took me so long to really ‘get’ that. I think the view that it de-stresses which I now think is a bit of a myth.

I had just under 7 units (my personal daily limit anyway) last night along with plenty of water, will be AF today and will likely have a couple of glasses tomorrow night.

Went for a run this morning, going to have a late protein rich lunch and an early night with a book. Main aim is 2L of water as I am so bad at drinking it.

Exciting life, this!

How are you getting on Water? Did you enjoy a drink last night! And Bookskark?

tinkerbellx · 17/05/2020 11:06

Hi
Can anyone please recommend a good book I can download as an audiobook ?
Currently commuting a long way to work daily and I've already listened to "The Sober Diaries" and really enjoyed it . Was thinking about downloading another self development type book with a focus on drinking less ?
Any recommendations greatly appreciated .
Any apps too would be great .

MazDazzle · 24/05/2020 22:25

I’m day 7 AF so thought I’d look for a thread to help keep me on track. Seems like I’ve found the right place!

I’ve been drinking 5-7 days a week since lockdown and the units are going up and up. I’ve piled on weight was so bloated. I’ve been taking it one day at a time. I never thought I’d make it to a week, but here I am!

ModConnie · 25/05/2020 14:50

@tinkerbellx - maybe the Unexpected Joy of being Sober? I don’t know much about quit lit - I did read it but I don’t want to demonise drink for myself. It was quite good as a stand-alone book as it was easy to read and she is relatable in lots of ways but I guess it depends what you want from it.

How are you @Waterandlemonjuice? I had a few drinks last Monday and Tuesday so having the rest of the month dry, hopefully. Aim is 20 days AF for this month anyway.

Hi MazDazzle - good work on your 7 days AF! Are you sleeping soundly and and embracing the plumper skin and lack of hangover?!

This thread is quieter than it was but I can’t find any other threads that are for actual moderating so I’m sticking with it!

tinkerbellx · 25/05/2020 20:32

Thanks Modconnie will download that one .
So..... tomorrow I have to be AF for 4 nights for the first time in too long .
Am now living with dp and for whatever reason my blood pressure is up .... he suggested we both go AF during the week and walk more as I have a stressful and new job and we're both still working full time and more currently and there others things which have tested us but we're good .... just seems my blood pressure isn't.
I want to be able to do this and embrace it rather than dread it because it the kick up the * I need to be honest .
Hoping this thread is active tomorrow whilst I'm sipping water ?
Hope everyone is safe and well .

Buntyforgirls · 26/05/2020 09:32

I’m with you for a 4 day stretch @tinkerbellx good luck! It’s so much harder when the sun is shining...

Buntyforgirls · 26/05/2020 09:37

And also to @MazDazzle and @ModConnie...

MazDazzle · 26/05/2020 09:50

Thanks ModConnie I’ve been up early everyday, with no need for an alarm clock. I’ve definitely got more energy, rather than going about in a haze. I’ve also got more head space because I’m not constantly thinking about what I’m going to drink next.

Good luck tinkerbell! I completely understand that 4 days seems like a long time. Going on long walks should definitely help though.

Buntyforgirls · 27/05/2020 08:31

Day 2 ahead. Good luck everyone who is moderating this week. I love the apps - like a child with a sticker chart!

ModConnie · 27/05/2020 18:09

How’s everyone getting on?

Fine here - I also like the apps! I have a combo of Try Dry and Drinkaware - one to keep a lid on how many units and the other to keep a lid on how many days. It’s a bit annoying if you just fancy one small glass of wine to not get the teacup, even if you’ve only had under 2 units but gives me pause anyway!

I’m toying with the idea of a drink at the weekend, given the weather, but we’ll see. I was going to leave the booze til June but June might be drenched. Hmm.

littlemeitslyn · 27/05/2020 19:28

Hate all the swearing, not necessary 😿

Buntyforgirls · 28/05/2020 18:26

Coming to the end of completing day 3. Agree that there should be a half cup option too!
I know what you mean about the temptation of a sunny weekend too...

(No swearing here)

changeisasgoodas · 28/05/2020 19:45

Ah fuck off littlemeitslyn.

( de-lurked just to say that. As you were...)

littlemeitslyn · 28/05/2020 20:04

A saucepan

ModConnie · 28/05/2020 20:47

That’s great @Buntyforgirls - day three is a good effort for the week! Practice makes perfect. So much easier to enjoy the drinks you choose when there’s a decent gap between the last.

I foresee a cold G&T in my future this weekend and will get some smoked salmon as the perfect accompaniment.

@changeisasgoodas - thanks - I tend to agree. Coming on to an alcohol support thread to critique the swearing (presumably in the title from a few months back) seems a tad dense but I believe there is a history of criticising spelling and grammar while adding absolutely nothing of any use, common sense or wit elsewhere. Some people are just cunts!

MazDazzle · 28/05/2020 21:27

Day 11 AF here. I actually caught my face in the mirror and thought bloody hell, you look well! I’ve got a definite glow. I’ve got a meeting tomorrow morning, then 3 days off. Hopefully the sun will shine. I see an iced G&T on the horizon too. Grin

Oopsdiditagain · 30/05/2020 11:56

Hi everyone. Hope you don’t mind me tagging along? Day 1 for me. I feel absolutely dreadful today after drinking all week long. So I thought I’d come on here as I’m hoping it will help me not pick a wine bottle up!!! I have none in the house & won’t be going out!!! Being furloughed has not helped as I have fook all to do all day everyday. 😫

tinkerbellx · 31/05/2020 10:29

Hi ooops .... early days for me too .
Will be drinking today tbh but not non tue . How was yesterday for you ?

Hangingover · 31/05/2020 10:33

Hi everyone, am I allowed to join? I started my own thread (which is here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3923921-Alcoholic-Experience ) and someone mentioned about this thread is it for people cutting down or giving up completely or both? Nice to meet you all.

Buntyforgirls · 03/06/2020 19:04

Nice to meet you too ! I am on my day 3- I am currently aiming for 4 days a week AF- and it has been much easier this week., after several years of trying- have been on this thread before.
Hope everyone else is moderating/ being kind to oneself.
Good luck@Hangingover- let us know how it is going.
