Duffy: Does she ever wear ANYTHING other than a teeny strapless black dress, and other rants....

I managed to get through most of last year without having any feelings, good or bad, towards Duffy. Had heard her songs on the radio a few times, saw a picture of her once or twice, and that was pretty much it.

Over the past month however she seems to have been on TV non-stop: TOTP, SCD etc etc, and then last night on Jools Holland. And every time she has been wearing that stooopid dress (it is possible they are different LBDs but all are v short and strapless.
She, her dress, and those ridiculous arm movements to 'Mercy' make me want to throw things at the television.

Please tell me I am not alone.

Her whole act is a horrible contrived fake. She sounds like Hilda Baker

Yes. Annie Lennox was shit too, but no-one NO-ONE compared for awfulness to Martha Reeves and the Vandelas. Everyone in the audience just looked embarrassed to be there when they banshee shrieked sang.

On the other hand, the Ting-Tings, Kelly Jones, that American band whose name escapes me and the mad Finnish harmonica band were all brilliant.

And Dizzee Rascal. He was great too, much against my better judgement.

Kelly Jones passed me by for years but now makes me feel rather lecherous.

But Lily Allen? What's she for?

Annie Loenox's dress was awful. Martha thingybob was terrible and totally showed up by the fabulous Ruby Turner at the end.

Duffy needs a new dress and Adele needs a new cardigan.

Tingtings and hold steady (?) were great. I do have a soft spot for Annie but wish she had sung 'here comes the rain again' instead of whatever that dodgy song was she sang in the green dress! Didn't suit her voice at all.

Hmm, yes, he is rather teeny. I'm not after a relationship though so could, literally, overlook that.

My uncle and cousin went to see Duffy last month and said she is a proper minger - is very short and very chubby in real life and looks like she hit every branch on the way down and then went up for another go.

I think she is lovely and I like her music too!

I saw Kelly Jones walking through Cardiff a few years ago and can confirm that he is v v short but he does have the most amazing skin, he looked all soft and velvety and luminous [sigh]

DH and I (as you do, over a coupla bottles of bubbly, sat in like saddoes on NYE ) discussed the relative merits of the Hootenanny acts, including the execrable Annie Lennox. Now [sadl] she is my era and in her prime at that time she was amazing. I remember her doing something live (was it LiveAid?) and she was electrifying.

But it was of its time. And last night she was SHITE. 1. Because she seemed unrehearsed. So very different from someone who is clearly a working singer like Ruby Turner. I felt annoyed and patronised, as if we were supposed to be grateful she just turned up. 2. She came across as someone who have never listened to any more music since 1986. That is particularly irritating in a singer/musician I think. Much better to do something classic (though she did murder That Man of Mine too) or contemporary, than one of your own rather dated songs.

Or if you must, at least sing it in a contemporary/classic style, not trying to relive your best years. Things move on.

And 3. however thin you are and however fashionable your pleated silk top, women over 50 just never get their upper arms out, bingo wings or not.

Cripes. Who knew we had such a lot to say on Annie Lennox?

Give me Kelly Jones' croaky soul (circa Rod Stewart before he became all, er, pop) rather than Duffy's pretend sixties thing any blardy day.

I forgot Dave Edmunds too. What was weird about him was that GirlTalk was quite a cool song when it came out. And he's just turned into one of Chas and Dave. Cringe.

love kelly jones's (help pedants please) voice, but find it hard to take him seriously as a proper rock star with a name like Kelly!

I agree that the whole hootenany thing needs a fresh new look; it was great when it first started, but is crap now.
