Do you have the heating on at night?

PistachioTiramisu · Today 08:43

We have never had our heating on at night - it always went off around 9. DH decided to 're-program' the thermostat yesterday and set it to come on if the temperature drops below 17 during the night, with the result that the heating was on ALL night. It was far too hot for me so I opened the window, which he hates me doing as all the heat goes out of the window (I do agree with this, but it was so stuffy!). Also the pipes were creaking and making a noise all night and earplugs didn't help.

He has 'amended' it this morning, so we will see what happens tonight, but it set me thinking, do many of you have the heating on all night? It's something I have never done, except on the coldest of cold nights. I think it is an awful waste of money.

Never. Well, it's set at 13c overnight so will only come on if it drops below that, and it only ever does on the very very coldest nights.

Our room is cool, we have a wool duvet which is amazing.

HoraceCope · Today 08:46

not generally - it gives me a headache
it would have to be VERY cold for me to relent.

Specialneedsnightmare · Today 08:47

Definitely not. It would feel like setting fire to bank notes. Pj's and duvet is the way but currently it's too warm in my flat for pj's..

Seeline · Today 08:47

No unless it is a really prolonged really cold spell. It is set to come on if the temp goes below 5 to stop pipes freezing.
Ours is an old Edwardian house which loses heat very quickly, but it would still be too warm to sleep with the heating on all night!

Yes this - ours is set to 14 overnight so essentially it is turned off.

MissCharlotteLutterell · Today 08:48

My bedroom is on a thermostat to come on if it goes below 15 at night but otherwise no. It only does if we get a seriously cold several degrees below zero night outside.

LondonLass2026 · Today 08:49

No, never. I would far rather warm up at night with blankets and duvets when it's freezing outside. Heating just gives me a splitting headache, and makes my dogs pant uncomfortably.

BirdLandedonmyHead · Today 08:49

With our "Nest" system it would come on if it dropped below 9ºC but its never happened. Its usually around 13ºC before the heating gies on in the morning in Winter

newtvtune · Today 08:49

Never it gives me a headache. Me and my husband have had many a disagreement over this issue. He was brought up in a boiling house with it on all the time where as my parents were more frugal! It seems crazy to me to sleep with it on!

Fieldday26 · Today 08:49

I think ours is set to come on below 15 but it’s a new well insulated house, so can’t imagine that will happen often. It will be our first winter here (moved in March) so will see how often that happens in reality and adjust if needed, but I don’t see the need for heating to be on once in pjs and under the duvet.

Bluelake · Today 08:50

No, never. Tried it once in our old house when we had the cold December in 2010 (we had snow on ground literally all month), and I could hear it constantly clicking on and off, so switched off. Occasionally, we taken it off timed later evening and forgot, one of us has woken up within a couple of hours sweltering in bed. Overall, I think we'd get too hot in bed if we tried to sleep with it on all time.

HatethedarknightsQW · Today 08:51

No, unless it’s proper set to be below freezing overnight. We’re by the sea so that rarely happens…

Yerroblemom1923 · Today 08:51

V old house so set to come on if it drops below 18. Mainly for the kids. I'd just dress warmer but hate to think of them being cold! I tend to turn the radiator off in my room though as I get a dehydration headache otherwise.

cloudchaos · Today 08:52

Ours is set to come on if it drops below 15. But sometimes I wake up cold and turn it on.

MrsUrdd · Today 08:52

Mine is set for 16.5 and rarely turns on. Your house must be quite cold

Same, except our night time thermostat is set at 12 degrees.

Our first house had no central heating and one winter it was so cold we would wake up to ice on the inside of the windows.

I never want to go back to living like that again.

SJM1988 · Today 08:54

We have it so if it gets below 10 degrees it will kick in but it rarely does that even in deep winter.
I struggle with migraines if it is too hot in the house. So we just have duvets, thick PJs and blankets at worst if we need them. Its much nicer for it to be colder and bundled up then have the heating on

Nannyfannybanny · Today 08:54

No,but we don't have it on much in the day either. Chatting on another thread, where people keep basically saying if you're over 60,you shouldn't let the temperature go below 22,or you will get blood clots and die! I'm 76,was nursing over 40 years,so I consider myself reasonably intelligent. (Where's the laughing emoji) it of course depends where you live and the type of property. Our last house was a 1930s semi,dh added gas ch,we had new double glazing, it was always cold and draught, tiny place. We now have a 1960s detached open plan 2 bed bungalow (the downsize) bith in the se .we have replaced the windows...some were the original single glazed wood, already had cavity wall insulation. Loft is heavily lagged. The other morning it was 4c outside, 13c in,I put the ch on. The most we have it up to is 18c. The radiators are off in the bedrooms. Of it goes down to 1c,frost,they will be on a while, never ever have had heating on at night.

Natsku · Today 08:55

Our heating is on 24/7 from the autum until spring, if it goes off at night it gets too cold and then takes a lot of heat to warm up. But I live in a cold country.

Howinthehelldidthishappen · Today 08:55

Never. I have it set to 12 degrees overnight, and have the window open every night throughout winter and it still never comes on.

I haven't even got my duvet back out yet, still sleeping with just the duvet cover at the moment.

Gravygranules · Today 08:56

We do during the coldest months - DC2's room is on two external walls of an old house so gets cold quickly and I don't want him waking up because he's cold. Otherwise it's on for a couple of hours in the morning and in the evening.

EnchantingDecorations · Today 08:56

No it's set to 13° overnight and virtually never comes on, it would wake us up as the pipes are noisy and next to our bedroom. When we first got the Nest we set it to 18° at 7am and it used to start up at about 4.30 to get the house up to 18 by 7am - we very quickly switched that feature off.

hellospring26 · Today 08:58

No I hate it. I’ve got on older boiler that is time rather than temp controlled - off at 2200 on at 0600, clicked on longer if needed for any reason.

Jaylfcp · Today 08:58

So

There are 2 reasons why heating should be left on low around 16 during the night.

  1. It may actually save you money. Depending on the build type of your home. But keeping your home at a steady temp of far more efficient than hot cold hot cold.
  1. Helps prevent condensation which caused mould. A warm but ventilated home is far less likely to have condensation than a cold not ventilated home.
AwksBut · Today 08:59

We have ours set at 17 all year round, as soon as the temp drops below that it quietly slides some warmth into the house, don't turn it up higher during the morning and evening untiI I really need to on the coldest of snaps (UK). The 17 when needed rule is very cost-efficient in an old house, keeps a reasonable temp day and night
