Do you have the heating on at night?

We have never had our heating on at night - it always went off around 9. DH decided to 're-program' the thermostat yesterday and set it to come on if the temperature drops below 17 during the night, with the result that the heating was on ALL night. It was far too hot for me so I opened the window, which he hates me doing as all the heat goes out of the window (I do agree with this, but it was so stuffy!). Also the pipes were creaking and making a noise all night and earplugs didn't help.

He has 'amended' it this morning, so we will see what happens tonight, but it set me thinking, do many of you have the heating on all night? It's something I have never done, except on the coldest of cold nights. I think it is an awful waste of money.

Heating past 8pm is a No no in my house.
if its really cold (near 4C or below outside) heating is set to be on about 1hour before we need to get up.

Heat pumps in some rooms so those stay at a consistent temperature summer and winter.

The rest of the house… yes if it gets cold enough the heat switches on. I currently have it set to 10C because of the price of oil.

We are in Maine so we do get really cold nights (and days).

Never. Do not like sleeping in a warm bedroom. My flat rarely goes above 21c anyway (from choice).

Maybe try setting it to 15 instead of 17. It'll be on a lot less and so cost a lot less.

Whether it's on or off is moot really, it's what it's set to. On and set to 10 degrees is very similar to having it off. We used to set it to about 13 degrees before we got our heat pump, which was virtually off in our well insulated house.

It's on at 16c all year round (at the moment). The thermostat is in the living room.

It's fine as the house is warmer during the day (for the time being).

Warm air rises so it's up at around 20-21c at night in the upstairs bedrooms.

Also the temp in the bedrooms can be very different to the temp where your thermostat is. When it's 17 in our main living room it can be easily 20 in the bedrooms. So if you have a portable thermostat, taking it up into a bedroom can have a similar effect to turning it down a couple of degrees. But it's probably easier to adjust the set temp than carry it round the house.

Only if it’s so cold I am worried about the pipes freezing. So very rarely.

We set ours to 18 overnight so it clicks on and off.
