Do you have the heating on at night?

PistachioTiramisu · Today 08:43

We have never had our heating on at night - it always went off around 9. DH decided to 're-program' the thermostat yesterday and set it to come on if the temperature drops below 17 during the night, with the result that the heating was on ALL night. It was far too hot for me so I opened the window, which he hates me doing as all the heat goes out of the window (I do agree with this, but it was so stuffy!). Also the pipes were creaking and making a noise all night and earplugs didn't help.

He has 'amended' it this morning, so we will see what happens tonight, but it set me thinking, do many of you have the heating on all night? It's something I have never done, except on the coldest of cold nights. I think it is an awful waste of money.

Yes it is set to come on if the indoor temperature drops below a particular level. We also all have electric blankets though so if you are cold in bed then you can set it to a low setting to keep warm.

We have Hive and different temperature settings depending on the time of day so slightly warmer when people are up, showering and getting dressed then it drops to the day time temp. It goes down to the night setting at a particular time too.

I cannot be doing with competitive my house has to be minus 12 before I put the heating on. Everyone feels comfortable at different temperatures if that requires the heating being on then I will pay it.

Hummingbirdz · Today 09:03

No we don't

Monty36 · Today 09:05

I do not like being cold so yes, it comes on. Rather higher than many have said. I know it costs.

GeorgeTheFirst · Today 09:06

No. And I live in an Edwardian house so it gets chilly

katzrooldogzdrool · Today 09:22

Only if the frost protection function kicks in. I'm all in favour of being warm, but heating the house when everyone is in bed is a bit daft.

Arbourimage · Today 09:24

I’ve never felt the need. I love a warm house and it’s on in the evening and from about 1.5 hours before we get up so it’s warm straight away in the morning but I’ve never been cold while asleep in bed.

Nannyfannybanny · Today 09:25

It doesn't save you money keeping the heating on. Read Martin Lewis. Keeping it on low at 16c,that's not low! Ventilation is more important for damp, reducing mould. I know people who cook with the windows closed, stick washing on radiators, then complain about damp and mould. We do have a dehumidifier, and its used when I dry washing inside. The UK has a high humidity level.

So

There are 2 reasons why heating should be left on low around 16 during the night.

  1. It may actually save you money. Depending on the build type of your home. But keeping your home at a steady temp of far more efficient than hot cold hot cold.
  1. Helps prevent condensation which caused mould. A warm but ventilated home is far less likely to have condensation than a cold not ventilated home.

It’s might save you money but as with most things the cheapest option unusually the least pleasant. 16 degrees at night under a duvet feels very different to 16 degrees during the day when you’re on the floor playing with children or sitting working.

Another who dislikes a warm bedroom (hate it in fact!).

We are all different in our wants and needs, but mine is definitely the following -

Warm house in the living and circulation (hall, stairs etc.) areas.

Cool/cold bedroom but VERY warm bed (heated blanket/throw). Sleep quality is amazing in a cool/cold bedroom for me anyway. I notice straight away that I am sort of choking and can't nod off if staying in a hotel where the room is hot and stuffy.

TeensNoMore · Today 09:30

Only in the coldest of cold nights.

Saturdaysfairies · Today 09:32

No. If under 17C it goes on.

wheredidtheteago · Today 09:39

No it gets too stuffy, I do have a heated blanket in bed though which is on a timer :)

Seawolves · Today 09:46

Heating kicks in if the temp drops below 18° overnight, the radiator in my room is turned right down/off overnight. My little boy has poor thermoregulation and his body temp can drop to 34.9° in his sleep, he's also on palliative care so keeping him warm overnight is essential.

SabreIsMyFave · Today 09:47

We have a combination boiler, so the heating is never switched off, but we leave it at around 11-12C overnight. It rarely comes on overnight, unless it drops to minus 5 or less outside, which isn't that often to be honest.

.

AppleCrumbleBake · Today 10:00

Yes but that's because we have a heat pump. The radiators in the bedrooms have TRVs though so they can be individually adjusted, I have ours turned down slightly otherwise the room would get too hot at night.

When we had a gas boiler it always went off around 10pm when we went to bed.

floppybit · Today 10:02

No, never, I find heating overnight unbearable! Plus if you’re under a duvet there’s no need.

Hey iv just put some facts out there for all. You do you.

LilyBunch25 · Today 10:07

No never. Night settimg is 16 so it would only come on if it got that cold, which our house doesn't.

Nevermissabeat · Today 10:10

Yes. It kicks in under 20°.

I can't sleep in cold air. Yes I'm layered up, Yes I'm menopausal, yes I've had blood tests, Yes I'm slim and healthy.

Amira83 · Today 10:10

I can hardly afford it on daytime nevermind night time

MammaTo · Today 10:10

Generally don’t have it on overnight, but if it’s a particularly cold spell I’ll amend the thermostat so it doesn’t drop below 19 degrees (our downstairs is quite warm as we have the tumble dryer there). Our LO’s room always feels really cold in the morning so I set it to come on at 5am, OH gets up for work at 6am so it’s nice and warm during the dark mornings.

Cyclistmumgrandma · Today 10:12

Yes, we have a heat pump so it runs 24/7.

Ineffable23 · Today 10:36

Mine is set to 14. I actually wouldn't mind my bedroom getting colder than that but it then takes so long to warm up in the morning that it's hopeless. So it only comes on in the night during really cold weather.

Autumnallaround · Today 10:45

I hate it on past 8pm. I need the house to be cool for sleep.

I like to sleep in joggers and jumper and socks with a thick feather duvet, but a very cold room.

I also don't like heated blankets etc

TheGruffalosNan · Today 10:47

No, never.
