Would you live in a house with a tragic/dark history?

I've just gone down a rabbit hole thanks to a book I'm reading and found this. It's a lovely little flat in a great location and for the time, a brilliant price. But would I want to live there? I don't know. I'm not given to woo and I'm quite level-headed but I'm not sure I'd fancy it tbh.

Would you live in a house that had a dark history? Particularly if you could get it for a knock down price?

A friend was brought up in a house where a suicide had occurred at the property.
I won't go into detail here, but it was not a happy house, though very well kept.

Jollyjapesuntiltheystopped · Yesterday 20:37

Bargain price, too.

Ladybird69 · Yesterday 20:41

No never not even if I was paid a million £s. I once viewed a house that felt ‘dark’ myself and the estate agent practically broke our necks running out of there. I found out a few years later that Fred west had worked on it. 😬

Enjoyingautumn · Yesterday 20:43

I wouldn’t live somewhere where such evil had occurred, no. I think in choosing to live there you would be accepting a link to what had happened there. I couldn’t be cool with it, knowing the horrors that had gone on between those walls.

cheesymarmite · Yesterday 20:44

Well without going into detail, I do. Did not know when I moved iy and actually thought it had a lovely feel to it! 😅. I like to think that we are bringing happiness to it.

GentleIron · Yesterday 20:44

The truth is that we can't necessarily know the history of the homes we live in. There has been some tragedies and trauma in my family, but new people are living happily in the houses where these events occurred, none the wiser.

Nitgel · Yesterday 20:46

I knew it would.be that flat. No I could not.live there. I think they should demolish it

XenoBitch · Yesterday 20:50

My house is about 150 years old, so I don't doubt that nothing dark or tragic has happened there at some point.

It might be a bit different if something happened there that was also big news.

lightlower · Yesterday 20:57

I think a lot of homes would have a history as such and no doubt some tragedies and trauma but something on this scale would be an absolute no. There’s tragedy and then there’s horror that is just too unimaginable

FindingMeno · Yesterday 21:00

No way.
I think it would hold sadness.
I am woo admittedly but I feel it would have seeped into the fabric of the building.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · Yesterday 21:02

I think I could. In my block of flats two men have committed suicide (in different flats) in the last year and new people are living there now with, I assume, no problems. They seem happy enough.

I realise that's not murder. I can see why people wouldn't like it.

BelleEpoque27 · Yesterday 21:03

Nope, I couldn't. I'm intrigued to know how it feels though.

I viewed a house that felt incredibly eerie and am convinced something awful happened there. It sold for a lot less than it was on for originally, so clearly others agreed.

Foundress · Yesterday 21:06

That article is from 2015 @Bramblies I think I read more recently that someone converted that flat and the other flats back into one house. Whether they live in it as a house or have sold it I don’t know. Perhaps someone will be along soon who has more details of that. No I wouldn’t live there no matter how cheap it was.

wiredandtired · Yesterday 21:06

No I couldn't.

But not because of anything "woo" or spiritual about the house being sad and ghosts of the past etc.

Just because if I knew what had happened, it would play on my mind. I wouldn't be able to relax because I would be thinking about what had happened there. It would never really feel like a calm place to be for me.

TemperanceWest · Yesterday 21:07

I wouldn't live in that particular flat, no.

AliceMcK · Yesterday 21:07

Given how old houses in the UK are I think many of them have had something dark happen in them. Most of them have had people die in them, because that’s where people died before hospitals and care homes. I wouldn’t specifically go looking into the past of a house I buy. I do find some houses have dark unpleasant feelings about them and I wouldn’t live in one I felt uncomfortable in.

Ketzele · Yesterday 21:08

Generally, yes. But if it featured a particularly nasty crime that would play on my mind, perhaps not.

There's a house near me where some previous owners loved it so much they arranged to be buried in the garden. (No, I dont know how, but every time it comes up for sale its in the local news.) A lot of people dont want to live there, but surely that would bring only happy vibes?

Nilsson's lair, not so much.

TuxedoPark · Yesterday 21:10

I live in a house where there was a famous murder. It’s a lovely house.

EmeraldSlippers · Yesterday 21:15

There's having a sad history (someone old or ill died there); there's having a really sad/tragic history (someone died by suicide there, or a kid disappeared, something like that), and there's the lair of a gruesome serial killer.
I think the first two I could rationalise away and be fine with living there. The last one I could not.

OpheliaNightingale · Yesterday 21:15

I do!

BriarTime · Yesterday 21:16

Side issue really, but I never thought I’d see the day that a pokey flat that people had literally been dismembered in would be considered a bargain at . . . a quarter of an effing million. I feel old.

Lookatheskies · Yesterday 21:26

I dont think that flat exists any more. I cant find it anyway. I wouldn't, couldn't, as I would think about it and feel sad.

thecatneuterer · Yesterday 21:30

I wouldn't care. I couldn't be less woo if I tried.

Autumngirl5 · Yesterday 21:33

I couldn’t live there but I am interested which book you are reading?

TemperanceWest · Yesterday 21:36

I had a look too. Maybe they just blocked it off from the rest of the building or something.

Is the book you are reading called Killing for Company by any chance @Bramblies ?
