Do you tip the takeaway delivery person

If I order takeaway food I usually collect. Recently I ordered a home delivery of 10 fish suppers for visiting friends and family. There was a delivery charge of £3.50 plus an administration charge of £1.50. I tipped £5. The delivery guy was extremely grateful! This made me wonder if it was usual to tip the delivery person and if it is, how much do people usually give?

I sometimes tip on the uber app. But I don't tip the driver with cash.

No.

Every now and then we have an order from a Chinese takeaway and i tip the driver a fiver. I also tip delivery people from the parcel firms as they don't earn very much.

Always have..and always get first drop when the food is piping hot..

That's very kind. How much do you usually give them?

Flipping heck, if I tipped all the parcel delivery couriers I'd never have any money! Plus half of them round here throw the parcel at the doorstep, take a photo and bugger off, so i wouldn't be able to tip them even if I wanted to.

I don't generally these days, with all the service charges plus mandatory tip put on bills now I've kind of got out the habit. Also generally online orders take payment up front and I never seem to have cash.

Tip/Service charge rant:-
A new chip shop has opened near me (Scotland) and they add both a service charge and tip on to your bill. Basic fish and chips works out to £28, they don't seem to get much business from locals just unsuspecting tourists.

Dandeloosha · 25/10/2026 09:57

No, I pay a service charge. I never have cash these days anyway.

Saturdaysfairies · 25/10/2026 09:57

No. Then people start to tip me for doing my job I will.

RaraRachael · 25/10/2026 09:58

OH does. I don't. But I never tip anyone.

finchpar · 25/10/2026 09:58

Yes usually if I have change. Maybe £2.

I don’t and still get first drop as we are the way out to the wider estate.

PeasOff · 25/10/2026 10:03

Nope. Service charge/delivery fees are paid.

Have never tipped a delivery driver in my life! I don’t tip anyone except adding it to the bill for a meal out.

I noticed there was an option to tip on the app but I thought it presumptuous to ask for a tip before providing the service!

UniquePinkSwan · 25/10/2026 10:12

No because I don’t carry cash and there isn’t an option on the app

So you tip before the service is provided.

You can add a tip after.

Fuck no. Don’t tip anyone.

It’s the only reason we order from that shop lol. Usually we go and collect.
