Do you tip the takeaway delivery person

If I order takeaway food I usually collect. Recently I ordered a home delivery of 10 fish suppers for visiting friends and family. There was a delivery charge of £3.50 plus an administration charge of £1.50. I tipped £5. The delivery guy was extremely grateful! This made me wonder if it was usual to tip the delivery person and if it is, how much do people usually give?

The rare takeaway, in the dark and rain, I always feel that they have a tough job and give them a few pounds. The drivers always seem extremely pleased.

We'll tip delivery for larger, bulky items. £5 or £10 if it takes them time and trouble. When we had our settees delivered, it took a while to get them in. We gave the men £10 each because they were so helpful.

bananaboats · 25/10/2026 10:55

No i rarely tip anyone and takeaways are so expensive now already

LBFseBrom · 25/10/2026 10:57

I always tip online when I pay for my order. The 'riders' are always extremely pleased and thank me.

MyCatsAreFuckwitts · 25/10/2026 13:31

I'm a part time takeaway delivery driver to make extra income to my main job.
The service charge and delivery fee to not get paid to the driver.

Edited to say takeaway

I tip. But I don’t use cash anymore so rely on the app allowing me to do it. The other night the restaurant itself delivered it so outside of the JustEat tipping system and I felt bad, but he didn’t seem to expect it actually. Anyone who I have given a tip to in person has always thanked me.

Diddledeedo · 25/10/2026 13:43

Yes a couple of wuid for food tho usually collect myself. I tip furniture delivery people - usually a tenner

FunkyMonks · 25/10/2026 13:56

Sadly not way I see it is they are kept in a job by me using their place of work.
Takeaways now are considered a luxury item by today’s standards of living so no I don’t tip, I don’t get tipped doing my line of work either.

capybarasnoot · 25/10/2026 14:04

Yes always always: 3-5 quid. And I keep cold drinks in the fridge and always give one of these too.

xabimunich3 · 25/10/2026 14:05

I always tip. Most of the food delivery guys round here tend to be students, and they're often on pedal bikes in the pissing rain and wind.
I think if I'm coughing up for an expensive takeaway I can give them a few quid for a tip, I've noticed it's people who have themselves worked in hospitality/retail/courier work that tend to tip.

Lizzieregina · 25/10/2026 14:10

I’m in the US so not tipping would be unthinkable! Tips are how they get paid here. The added on delivery/service charge doesn’t go to the delivery person. A tip would be about $5 unless the weather was horrendous or the order really big.

However, I have more time than money, so I usually pick up my own takeaway food to avoid charges and tips.

I wouldn’t tip package delivery people as they are quite well paid here.

AppleCrumbleXx · 25/10/2026 14:16

never have never will

GoodkneeBadKnee · 25/10/2026 14:18

No.

ManyAMoon · 25/10/2026 14:53

I tip them. One of DD’s ex boyfriends did it for a while and it was a soul destroying job.

AnyQuestions101 · 25/10/2026 15:23

I tip everyone.

I’m in a customer service job, I’m cabin crew, and no one tips me, but I hate that as an excuse not to tip others. If I can afford a delivery for a (non essential) takeaway or whatever, I can afford a couple of quid for a tip

BobbleBear · 25/10/2026 15:34

No takeaways deliver around here as we’re too rural but I would occasionally tip people delivering large bulky items, particularly if they helped to move the bulky item into the right place, rather than just dumping it.

The delivery folk are usually very helpful, to be fair.

RaggedRocks · 25/10/2026 15:39

I don't have takeaway food delivered, but if I did, I would want to make sure that the food was hot before I tipped.

Empress13 · 25/10/2026 15:56

Nope not delivery drivers and like PP said if I were to tip every Evri etc driver I’d be skint the amount we order !

RaggedRocks · 25/10/2026 16:44

When I was young, that's what children were for - sending to the chippie with a list and a one pound note. You might go on your bike if it had lights.

shellyleppard · 25/10/2026 16:48

Yes at Christmas. I always offer a cold can of pop/bottle of water in the hot weather too. They were very grateful this summer 🏝️

RaggedRocks · 25/10/2026 16:49

You might get to keep the change depending on how much. Less than 10p was good as you were likely to be allowed that. Over 10p might be considered too much.

shellyleppard · 25/10/2026 16:50

@RaggedRocks my son eats most of the chips before the food gets home lol. We always used to pinch chips if we got a Chinese takeaway 🤣🤣

bugalugs45 · 25/10/2026 17:24

I used to do delivery driving years ago and can assure you that tips are massively appreciated, even if it’s £1 , and the takeaways are aware of who tips… & are remembered - you will get a priority delivery ( think Christmas Eve lol ) .
I always tip , Usually £2 , it’s hardly noticeable if I’m already buying a take away .

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/10/2026 17:28

Empress13 · 25/10/2026 15:56

Nope not delivery drivers and like PP said if I were to tip every Evri etc driver I’d be skint the amount we order !

Yet, you are paying for take away....

I don't generally these days, with all the service charges plus mandatory tip put on bills now I've kind of got out the habit. Also generally online orders take payment up front and I never seem to have cash.

Tip/Service charge rant:-
A new chip shop has opened near me (Scotland) and they add both a service charge and tip on to your bill. Basic fish and chips works out to £28, they don't seem to get much business from locals just unsuspecting tourists.

The service charge is optional so you can ask them to take it off.
I presume it's for deliveries though? Surely, they don't add a service charge when you go to get it yourself?

PrincessFiorimonde · 25/10/2026 17:41

Yes, normally just a couple of quid. We don't often have takeaways, though, and when we do we order direct, and the places we use don't add a delivery charge.

I also tip supermarket delivery drivers if they unpack the groceries (they usually do). I don't tip Evri (or similar) drivers unless it's Christmas time and I've seen them previously in the year.
