Do you tip the takeaway delivery person

If I order takeaway food I usually collect. Recently I ordered a home delivery of 10 fish suppers for visiting friends and family. There was a delivery charge of £3.50 plus an administration charge of £1.50. I tipped £5. The delivery guy was extremely grateful! This made me wonder if it was usual to tip the delivery person and if it is, how much do people usually give?

Yet, you are paying for take away....

Yep and your point is ?

FrankAbagnalesLies · 25/10/2026 17:45

I tip £1 - £2 normally. I tip more if the weather is bad or it's around Christmas.

The service charge is optional so you can ask them to take it off.
I presume it's for deliveries though? Surely, they don't add a service charge when you go to get it yourself?

It's for the packing, extras in the bag and time to do it, I'm guessing.

OMG. I wouldn't pay that. Get it taken off.

I never tip on apps like just eat where it asks me to before I’ve even had my food, it’s nearly always cold and takes forever so seems a bit wrong imo.
but our local Chinese you can order directly and pay cash so I normally round up to the nearest fiver or give an extra £2-3 for £20-30s worth of food. It’s normally the same couple of guys delivering and they’re always super fast and reliable. However the odd time I’ve not had any cash and had to pay card, they’ve never taken offence when I haven’t been able to, or if my rounding means it’s a measly amount they’re left with and I’ve got no more cash.

I'd def ask what it's for. I think margins are difficult for small businesses and they are looking to cover all costs.

Rabbitinahabit · 25/10/2026 18:06

I tip every single time.

mamaof4losingmymind · 25/10/2026 18:28

No not with service and delivery charges and paying on the app. Before uber, just eat ect when you just called and paid in cash i always tipped

DeftGoldHedgehog · 25/10/2026 18:33

Yes but only on the app. I'd find giving them cash at the door so embarrassing.

OneandFiveOnly · 25/10/2026 18:35

No. I refuse flatly to tip anyone. We have minimum wage.

I don’t know why there’s this obsession with tipping people who work in the food service industry.

I avoid ordering stuff online, and never use Amazon. If it was unavoidable to buy something small online, I wouldn't tip the DHL (or similar) driver. I've never needed new furniture, but if I do have something large delivered, like a fridge or something, and the delivery guys put it in place, of course I always tip. Very rarely, I get a supermarket delivery, and always tip. Occasionally get a Chinese takeaway delivered, always tip. Always tip taxi drivers. I don't tip Uber drivers, and am now wondering if that's bad and they should be tipped...

But why? Why do you tip all these people?

We have minimum wage in this country. Lots of other people are doing great jobs on minimum wage and don’t get tips. I used to be a trained bra fitter on minimum wage, including fitting post-surgery bras. Didn’t get tipped, nor did I expect to.

I’m in the US so not tipping would be unthinkable! Tips are how they get paid here. The added on delivery/service charge doesn’t go to the delivery person. A tip would be about $5 unless the weather was horrendous or the order really big.

However, I have more time than money, so I usually pick up my own takeaway food to avoid charges and tips.

I wouldn’t tip package delivery people as they are quite well paid here.

Thanks for sharing. It's really interesting to see the different views people have on tipping.

Some delivery drivers are self employed so don’t necessarily benefit from the minimum wage.
