Oh I’m so cross! How do I rescue my sofa?

It’s less than a year old and was relatively expensive at 3 grand. It’s very pale cream with a suede like feel and no pile. Cushions and seats etc are not removable - nothing is removable from it.

it’s been pissed on / sprayed on by a stray cat. That’s a whole other story of how the stray cat came to be but for now - that’s what’s happened

i cant pin point exactly where on my sofa he’s done it - nothing was soaking wet. But nearly half of the sofa smells strongly of urine

what do I use to clean it with? Any suggestions please? Don’t want to do anything involving bicarbonate of soda as that made things a whole lot worse when I tried that on carpet some years ago

I’ve tried my spot wash with dedicated cleaner. Thought it was sorted but no - smell returns just as bad once the fabric starts to dry again

do I need a new bloody sofa? Honestly so annoyed and I can’t sit down there as it smells so bad

Is it a house insurance claim?

PrettyLittleRose · Yesterday 19:57

Rug Doctor? We used it on our 3 piece suite, as well as the carpets. All came up a treat. Smile

likelysuspect · Yesterday 19:58

Biological washing powder, use a vax, use lots of it

I would be devastated, that stuff is almost impossible to get rid of

Just get a professional in

Coffeekat · Yesterday 20:01

There’s nothing that will get rid of that smell, and when you wash it, it will just smell again within a few days. I tried everything when we had a cat come in and piss on the carpet and even a rug doctor couldn’t eliminate the smell.

I disagree

Get a professional in. I couldn’t believe the difference

Well that’s good to hear and helpful for OP.

When you say you tried everything did that include getting professional carpet cleaners in?

ItsABatFaceThing · Yesterday 20:07

We could claim on the house insurance - providing it’s covered - will check that

I’ve ordered a pet enzyme spray thing arriving tomorrow so I’ll give that a go

but I could scream! ANYWHERE but the bloody sofa! I’m very concerned about pushing water slightly under the surface where it then remains a bit damp and well, we know the rest. The smell goes on and on

You really need an enzymatic cleaner. Nothing ammonia based. Try 1:1 white vinegar and water.

It may take a few attempts, but it will come out. Presumably, you now have a nice tom cat rug?

allthemind · Yesterday 20:08

Thats a challenge for sure.

Before giving up/calling in professional try this stuff though. Ive had some good success with this stuff https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dr-Beckmann-Stain-Odour-Remover/dp/B08CJ6J3BP?dplnkId=115bc26e-b954-428e-b62f-824d7089cf1e my cat likes to do dirty protests when we pick her up from the cattery....

And I could also get a specialist cleaner in but a quick Google isn’t showing me anyone in my area that guarantees to remove cat urine. Added to this I just can’t pinpoint where it is. It’s not like I can point and say ‘ yep there’

hence why think he’s sprayed

I used a rug doctor and shampoo that’s meant to break down the enzymes, and repeated several times, but nothing shifted the smell - fortunately it was in the corner of a room, but every time you went near it there was still a smell.

Biological washing powder is the only thing that removes cat urine, its due to the proteins in the urine and enzymes in the washing powder

Never ever use other cleaners and certainly not bleach, it enhances and magnifies the proteins and encourages cats to re spray.

NorrisToenail · Yesterday 20:09

You need a good enzyme cleaner, it's the only thing that will get rid of urine odour. Have a google

None will “guarantee” to remove cat pee 😕

Coffeeathovima · Yesterday 20:10

But the professional cleaner would clean the entire sofa…. No spot clean a patch!

Morecareneeded · Yesterday 20:10

I have successfully used this on a carpet in the past

ItsABatFaceThing · Yesterday 20:11

@HappiestSleeping yeah. I’m currently fashioning a pair of mittens!

Years ago, after my dog managed to chuck my laptop down the stairs, I discovered my policy didn’t cover me for damage caused by animals. Having said that, I wonder if this was specifically pets.

ItsABatFaceThing · Yesterday 20:12

Thanks all

I’ve ordered a couple of enzyme sprays / cleaners and will try that

unfortunately I’ve made it worse probably as I immediately used a vax spot wash with the proper solution. Thought it had cracked it but nope - as it’s starting to dry, smell returns

Having a similar problem except fortunately (?) it's on carpet. I know roughly where it is but it's stinking the whole living area out.

I've already tried the Dr Beckmann pet spray and biological washing powder, it's still damp from the most recent attempt but it hasn't removed the odour so I'm not hopeful that it'll be gone once dry. Following for any tips I haven't tried, and you have my sympathy OP

If so I've got a specialist cleaning kit, you might be able to buy it in store?.
Another thought, weve got a dog and pets at home does a really good pee spray that has got the smell of urine out of a sofa before. I just dont know how it would react on your fabric.

strictlybusinessuntildecember · Yesterday 20:15

I have the Xtreme enzyme spray from Amazon after one of my cats took an extreme dislike to my twins when they were born and it lasted for a good 2 years until the cat decided he’d tolerate them!
it’s also great for when any children has has a bed wetting accident the smell never comes back it’s great

The entire sofa needs to be cleaned rather than patch cleaning
