Oh I’m so cross! How do I rescue my sofa?

It’s less than a year old and was relatively expensive at 3 grand. It’s very pale cream with a suede like feel and no pile. Cushions and seats etc are not removable - nothing is removable from it.

it’s been pissed on / sprayed on by a stray cat. That’s a whole other story of how the stray cat came to be but for now - that’s what’s happened

i cant pin point exactly where on my sofa he’s done it - nothing was soaking wet. But nearly half of the sofa smells strongly of urine

what do I use to clean it with? Any suggestions please? Don’t want to do anything involving bicarbonate of soda as that made things a whole lot worse when I tried that on carpet some years ago

I’ve tried my spot wash with dedicated cleaner. Thought it was sorted but no - smell returns just as bad once the fabric starts to dry again

do I need a new bloody sofa? Honestly so annoyed and I can’t sit down there as it smells so bad

We could claim on the house insurance - providing it’s covered - will check that

I’ve ordered a pet enzyme spray thing arriving tomorrow so I’ll give that a go

but I could scream! ANYWHERE but the bloody sofa! I’m very concerned about pushing water slightly under the surface where it then remains a bit damp and well, we know the rest. The smell goes on and on

OP I can promise you that Simple Solution Extreme for fabrics will remove the smell. My male cat sprays the curtains when stressed and there were many unsatisfactory experiences before we found it. Bicarb does not work. Nor did generic bio odour removers.

I have successfully used this on a carpet in the past

I've used this on carpets. It's really good stuff and helps to neutralise odours!
Good luck, I hope it works for you.

BinBagDress · Yesterday 11:12

@socialdilemmawhattodo thats a good point and I don’t know the answer! I personally have no pets so I think it would be easy to prove to an insurance adjuster that visited I’m not a pet owner, there is no pet smell (sorry dogs etc do smell), no pet dander, no pet accessories leads, cat scratching posts, beds, bowls, food etc

I've just soaked my carpet patch in the Simple Solutions that lots have recommended and am feeling hopeful 🤞 I thought I'd got it last night but it reeked when I came down this morning.

Hope yours has arrived and we both have success @ItsABatFaceThing

You really need an enzymatic cleaner. Nothing ammonia based. Try 1:1 white vinegar and water.

It may take a few attempts, but it will come out. Presumably, you now have a nice tom cat rug?

@ItsABatFaceThing

Elbow Grease Vinegar from B&M or Tesco

Dollysfriend · Yesterday 12:50

I have a dog who's sprayed everywhere since I allowed my friend to visit with her dog. Doctor Beckham we use all the time plus Astonish. We have a vax.
If you have already wet wet washed it I'd make up of a solution of eucalyptus oil in water and spray it finely like a room spray. Unless they're a Panda animals don't like it!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · Yesterday 12:58

I was going to say that in addition to cleaning you need to open the windows, but if it means the cat will just come in and do it again - best not.

I had a tomcat break in through my catflap when I was pregnant. He sprayed all up the bottom of the stairs and the smell made me so sick... We used biological washing powder, as it was just wood, and the smell did, eventually, go.

Proper cross now! Waiting and waiting for Amazon to deliver … supposedly by 1pm. Only to go in and check my orders just now and apparently now arriving on 27th October!

ridiculous

so I’m off to a pet shop a few miles away to see what I can get there in the way of an enzyme cleaner

very good company. Was easy and we got a great deal. BUT you will not have much in the way of a warranty - think they give 6 months but we took a chance as it was such a good deal.

until old piss pants got to it!

I’ve called two cleaning companies to enquire about a professional clean. Both stated they will not guarantee to remove animal urine but happy to give it a go.

off to get some cleaner now so first stop is to see how I get on myself

Really to be the bearer of bad news, but doubt that anything will get rid of the smell. Many moons ago, my parents rented out their house whilst we moved overseas. We came back to no electricity (they hadn't paid their bills) and they had let their cats use every corner of every room as their litter tray. The house stank. Carpets were professionally cleaned but the smell was still there and had to be thrown away. It took a while to get out of the floors/walls as well.

Even years later, very occasionally you still got a whiff.

Good luck ... and will keep fingers crossed that modern day cleaning products can do what products back in the day couldn't.

AlexFurbison · Yesterday 14:18

I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this has been suggested already but you can use a UV light to see exactly where the cat has sprayed.

CoastalCalm · Yesterday 14:20

I’d use the spot wash with white vinegar

Amazingmom3815 · Yesterday 14:36

The stray cat was left in the house??

Seziah · Yesterday 14:46

I would use the enzyme cleaner very generously so it soaks through a bit to the foam. I would expect to give it a couple of goes. And did you say you have a carpet/upholstery vacuum to use in between? I sat in cat piss at someone’s house the other day and it came out with Dettol laundry sanitiser. I’ve always found the clear Dettol spray good for kitten pee on the floor. But it’s different with Tom cat pee, and with clothes because they can get a proper rinse through

100% recommend this Dr Beckman one, it worked a dream on my velvet feeling sofa where nothing else had! Had to do a large area and dried without smelling damp or fusty at all. I had tried several before that, none of them worked.

Yes, I used this when my cat got all anxious when we moved house, over my new carpets ….. it pretty much worked. I sprayed, shielded the area for a while so that she didn’t get attracted to it and re sprayed a few times. It did seem to work. Previously on other houses I’ve tried everything, nothing worked 😖

Elbow Grease Vinegar from B&M or Tesco

Edited

Elbow grease vinegar is 1:1 water and vinegar with a bit of eucalyptus thrown in. You can put a few drops of any essential oil to fragrance.

You have to use an enzyme cleaner especially for cat urine. I would use a professional and ask to see their insurance because if they mess it up they are responsible

Poobs2022 · Yesterday 17:15

I know you said no bicarb but my old dog peed on our mattress years ago and we cleaned with white vinegar mixed with water and soaked it up with bicarb. Had to leave it a day or 2 to pull all the wet out but then hoovered it up and it never smelt again.

Check your policy wording as many policies exclude “tearing scratching or fouling by domestic pets.” You may however be able to prove that this was not a domestic pet. Good luck
