Oh I’m so cross! How do I rescue my sofa?

It’s less than a year old and was relatively expensive at 3 grand. It’s very pale cream with a suede like feel and no pile. Cushions and seats etc are not removable - nothing is removable from it.

it’s been pissed on / sprayed on by a stray cat. That’s a whole other story of how the stray cat came to be but for now - that’s what’s happened

i cant pin point exactly where on my sofa he’s done it - nothing was soaking wet. But nearly half of the sofa smells strongly of urine

what do I use to clean it with? Any suggestions please? Don’t want to do anything involving bicarbonate of soda as that made things a whole lot worse when I tried that on carpet some years ago

I’ve tried my spot wash with dedicated cleaner. Thought it was sorted but no - smell returns just as bad once the fabric starts to dry again

do I need a new bloody sofa? Honestly so annoyed and I can’t sit down there as it smells so bad

Get a black light torch from Amazon, it will show up exactly where the cat has peed in florescent yellow (use in dim light) so you can target any cleaning to exactly the right spot.

allthemind · 21/10/2026 21:44

This is a great idea. Then Dr Beckham the fck out of every spot and put somewhere to dry.

AutumnLoverButNotYet · 21/10/2026 21:47

You need to get a professional, upholstery cleaner in. It's not so much what you are putting on the sofa, but the fact that without a proper industrial strength machine, you cannot extract enough of the product you're using all the water or the urine.

Many years ago, my partner, and I had a business in copper and upholstery cleaning. He was an absolute was at knowing which chemicals to use for every situation., the important thing is if they are a good upholstery cleaner (not some Jack the lad who just bought a van and decided to do it, but actually understands the chemistry behind it) you need to be fully honest about the products you have used and preferably, still have the bottles sprays or whatever, else you can end up with some nasty staining when the chemicals reacts to each other.

You were a bit too honest with the insurance company and should've just said it was a stray cat!!

Best of luck🤞🏼🤞🏼

I used to have an elderly cat who, when he was displeased with anything, would wee in random places in the house so I know how much it smells but you will get rid of it with an enzyme cleaner and that is the only thing that will work.

You might need a few applications and you will also need if it's really deep inside the sofa to just allow time for it to fade as well but it definitely will.

How old cat died about a year ago and none of the house smells anymore.

He used to particularly favour the porch and no matter how much I cleaned it when he was alive I could never get rid of the smell but the porch doesn't smell it at all anymore so just keep going with the enzyme cleaner but you might need to do it a few times over a period of a few months.

Copperoliverbear · 21/10/2026 21:53

Do you know who’s cat it is ask them to pay or claim on insurance.

SusanSHelit · 21/10/2026 21:56

You need an enzyme cleaner, I swear by nature's miracle. HAS to be the enzymes
one specifically. The enzy break down the crystals that ordinary cleaners can't. Really soak the area and let it sit. It might take a few goes. While the cleaner doesn't smell offend it also I think doesn't smell lovely so I like to go over with a steam cleaner to get the smell of the pet urine cleaner out

Mamabear487 · 21/10/2026 22:13

Get it professionally cleaned? We do it every 6 months it’s £120 but definitely worth it.

No patches or marks - I’ve cleared off my cushions and it’s ready for the enzyme cleaner this morning. It’s no worse today but although it looks super clean … there’s the aroma of eau de cat piss

Does it have cushion covers you can remove or are they all in one? My cat went through a stage of pissing on my sofa and I did have it professionally cleaned but the cleaner guy told me that as I had non removable cushions the wee gets in the stuffing of the cushions so the smell isn;t guaranteed to go. I bought myself a spot cleaner, some decent urine remover and kept spot cleaning. The smell did go so it can be done, but it might take a bit of time.

Alas no insurance purchased ( we had it for our last sofa and attempted a claim on it and they refused the claim - so meh. We decided not to go for that again)

but we couldn’t have anyway as it’s from an outlet in Manchester. We spotted the sofa in furniture village for 4k. I googled the make and model and found it at this outlet place for 2,900. Just one in stock and a customer return. Free delivery to me in the south east. 6 months warranty

deliberated and went for it and they were great and it’s been fantastic - it was brand new

it’s not fantastic now however

Please can you share the details of the outlet store , I am on the hunt for a new sofa and have seen a place called AMC furniture outlet in Manchester, I am wondering if its the same place.

Regarding the urine, I used a pet enzyme cleaner and bicarb to eliminate urine from my kitchen floor. You have to leave the spray on the surface for a while for it to work, I first made the mistake of wiping it immediately, but it needs time and i had to repeat it several times. Failing that, I would hire a professional cleaner.

I would call up some upholstery cleaning companies for a chat about what they can do and stop trying home remedies. Have a look at check a trade

catsflorafauna · Yesterday 10:05

We had a carpet cleaner in recently and they use a special light to see any urine marks and specially treat them first with specific products before cleaning/spreading. Really might be worth getting a professional upholstery cleaner out.

Chefpig · Yesterday 10:08

I use Guardsman but I have a policy with them. They're excellent.

Could you try Pink Stuff oxi spray? That's worked for me in the past.

ItsABatFaceThing · 21/10/2026 20:07

We could claim on the house insurance - providing it’s covered - will check that

I’ve ordered a pet enzyme spray thing arriving tomorrow so I’ll give that a go

but I could scream! ANYWHERE but the bloody sofa! I’m very concerned about pushing water slightly under the surface where it then remains a bit damp and well, we know the rest. The smell goes on and on

If you have accidental damage cover on home insurance they will likely arrange a professional clean and, if that doesn't work, replacement.

Professional cleaning often works best if you haven't tried anything yourself first.

@ double check insurance ours covers incidents with animals that are wild/stray not owned by the family or been invited in with pets.

For the smell 100ml 3% hydrogen peroxide, with one drop of washing up liquid in a spray bottle spray it on and gently rub it in leave for a hour and blot dry. It’s colour fast you may have to give it to applications and will stop any mould forming in the foam.

I wonder how you demonstrate to the insurance company that it really was a stray, and not a family pet.

Bishbashbuush · Yesterday 10:26

Oh no! Cat pee is the worst. It might even be too late for a professional at this point. DP had indoor cats who liked to sneakily piss on the carpet. He had cleaned the carpet himself which (according to the professional cleaner) had made the problem worse and embedded the smell even more. Whole carpet had to be ripped up and replaced. I’d contact your insurance provider and see what they can do.

It doesn't matter surely? You make a truthful statement about what happened.

zingally · Yesterday 10:40

Unfortunately, animal pissy smells really, really linger.

When I moved into my current house, it had just been vacated by a woman with 2 massive hairy dogs. Honestly, it wasn't a big enough house for 2 massive hairy dogs. The lounge and office were distinctly doggy smelling. I think the dogs slept in the office, and even with professional carpet cleaners, it was the best part of a year and a half before the smell finally went away.

I have successfully used this on a carpet in the past

I also back the simple solution. I spray it on neat & leave it to dry. Takes the smell out of absolutely anything.

BillieWiper · Yesterday 10:53

Simple solution spray in a blue bottle. It's got a pic of a dog on it but works for piss of all creatures. That will lift the odour but idk if it might damage the fabric?
