Would bats in the attic bother you?

Thinking of selling our house soon. We have a colony of bats in the attic. They cause no trouble but would this put you off as a buyer?

Do they keep you awake?

I love bats and would consider it a privilege to give them a home but I wouldn't want to be kept awake at night.

I’d be more worried if you had bats in the belfry

Theresabatinmykitchen · Yesterday 22:24

I’ve had the rabies vaccine because of coming into physical contact with a bat that flew into my house, I’ve since put screens on my windows so no way could I live with a roost in the attic for health reasons.

I love love love bats. But also love a loft. Can you board the loft so they can still stay but bits of it be usable?

This was my question too. I store stuff in the loft- camping gear that I don’t want bat poo on… but I also love bats.

lollygiggler · Yesterday 22:37

No, the loft cannot be boarded easily to make it more useable. They hang from the top of the roof in the middle

Would not dream of buying. And it's horrible to listen to things scuttling about in the roof space, plus hygiene issues etc. Good luck finding a buyer.

I love bats but I wouldnt want to live amongst them.

You can definitely hear scratchy noises in our bedroom which is directly beneath them. I kinda like it though, find it comforting to hear wildlife, but maybe I am just odd!

Oh great. Now you’ve got me down an internet rabbit hole of “who is Carole Tregoran” and the origin of the “I claim my £5” so much for me putting my phone down and getting an early night!!! Oh well, another late night scrolling Wikipedia and listening to the bats! Grin

Yes surely you have to get this sorted before you sell. Can't see many people being happy with this.

Impossible. They are here to stay. Criminal offence to do anything to encourage them to leave

If it makes you feel better I am literally about to complete on a house with bats in the roof. We do exist! I do have some concerns about the extra cost if we need roof repairs (we've been quoted 10 grand extra for bat surveys and on site advisors if we do major work), but we love the house and love wildlife, so have decided it's worth it. I'm looking forward to watching 'my' bats of a summer evening.

Shrigley · Yesterday 23:21

I would love it.

Only issue for me would be if the house needed work which the presence of bats would make more difficult- if that's the case you might want to take advice on how the work could be done without harming the bats or otherwise breaking the law, and possibly do the work yourself rather than leaving it as the buyer's problem.

A friend of mine is a licenced bat handler and recorder. He'd be thrilled.

climbintheback · Yesterday 23:29

Definitely not would love it!

Absolutely. The only bat I will ever like is 'Batfink' 😂

JoyousWriter · Yesterday 23:48

I had them in my old house. I just put plastic under their roost.

Is there no recompense for that?

I love bats but would absolutely not buy a house with them
