Would bats in the attic bother you?

Thinking of selling our house soon. We have a colony of bats in the attic. They cause no trouble but would this put you off as a buyer?

OP posts:

To be honest, yes. I used to know a family who had bats in an old property. They had to stop using one if the bedrooms due to the smell of urine, obviously a popular spot above that bedroom.

In reality, there's nothing you can do about it, so just put your house on the market.

SinuousTendrils · 06/10/2026 10:35

A friend at school used to refer to snot as 'bats in the attic' Perfectly normal.

Gengha · 06/10/2026 12:30

It would put me off and I don’t believe anyone else who says they would love it. It renders part of the house effectively unusable

dudsville · 06/10/2026 12:30

I had no idea that if bats moved into a house they then just own it. I would not buy a house in this situation. How do you manage with an attic that has layers of bat droppings and the potential fleas, do they get tics?

TattieSconeEggAndBacon · 06/10/2026 12:38

Fuck yes. Not a chance would I buy a house with bats. For health and safety, because once you’ve got them you are not really in control of not having them, and they would completely freak me out. Sorry OP, I think this would vastly damage your chance of selling.

DearlyDiego · 06/10/2026 13:42

It boggles my mind that there is no recourse for this, if you DON'T want your house to be taken over by bats.

You are genuinely expected to just put up with it, to the point, as a PP has mentioned, where parts of your house potentially become unliveable?

Madness.
Wouldn't touch it with someone elses' barge pole.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 06/10/2026 13:45

Absolutely not. The fact you can’t really get rid of them would put me off massively

IAxolotlQuestions · 06/10/2026 13:46

I’d buy it, but only if there was a way to clear out the bat crap don’t didn’t build up and cause the ceilings to collapse.

5289843DM · 06/10/2026 13:47

@DearlyDiego The key is to not allow them in, in the first place, so ensuring tiles aren't loose and there are no gaps/holes.

IF they have got in and you need to update your roof, you can actually buy bat tiles!

Sorry OP, I wouldn’t buy a house with bats in the attic. I stayed in a place with bats once. The squeaks and scratching noises in the rooms underneath were unpleasant.

If buying a house I would consider that: they render the attic unusable; the yuck factor of knowing that the droppings were building up; and that roof repairs are complicated and additionally expensive given their status as a proceed species. Those things would be sufficient to stop me buying the house no matter its other charms.

Luckily for you, several people in this thread seem unbothered!

So dramatic! Living rurally, most people I know have tiny colonies of bats - maybe just one, two or three. You’re summoning visions of dozens or hundreds! This isn’t how it is. Bats are endangered and therefore protected.

Wildlife has such a hard time.

House taken over by bats. 🤣🤣🤣 This is the best post ever. Yes, that’s what they do, stealthily at first…but soon you find them wearing your pyjamas and sitting in your favourite chair. There is no end to their cheek.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 06/10/2026 14:10

No, we have bats in our attic above our bedroom but you barely notice they are there!

patooties · 06/10/2026 14:11

No, they are mice with Wings. Fuck that.

I referred in my post to a previous posting on the thread where someone mentioned that they had a family member who couldn't use a bedroom because of the stench of bat urine - that sounds like "taking over" to me.

I'm sure it starts as a fairly small issue but give it 20 years and I reckon most homes would have the faint "stealthy" whiff of stale piss. No ta ✌

DramaAlpaca · 06/10/2026 14:36

I'd love it, they're cute. We have bats in the garden, I love watching them fly around in the evenings. Not a clue if they live in my attic, but I wouldn't mind if they did.

Growlybear83 · 06/10/2026 15:02

I wouldn't consider any property which had bats. But how would anyone know if you just got rid of them yourself?

GreengrocersApostrophe · 06/10/2026 15:10

Heart would say yes, head would say no. Head would win.

LondonLass2026 · 06/10/2026 15:17

Yes.

Everyone is different but they scare me. I often see them over the summer if I'm on a later evening walk with the dogs, and yes I know it's only insects they're swooping at, but they get SO close to me and my dogs at times.

I'll never forget when my partner was in the garden and absolutely laughing his tits off at me being scared of bats - and then one swooped right at his head. The screams... 😂

hattie43 · 06/10/2026 15:31

It would if I wanted to do a planning application to alter the house .

There are ways of dealing with the droppings and urine so it doesn’t accumulate and smell. I don’t quite understand why they let that happen.

But it never stops you doing that. You just have to work with the bat people to make sure the creatures are given alternative accommodation. There are so many urban myths about bats - that they prevent development. They really don’t. You just have to do the right things

They might not know. But it is a crime. Bats are protected. Pretty wicked to consider ‘getting rid’ of them

We used to live in a house that had bats in the attic

Once we woke up to a baby bat on the stairs!

They were no trouble but then again we didn't ever have to use the attic anyway! 😆

We had babies in the house too! They used to find random things to hang on like slightly ajar cupboard doors. Then they'd look all confused when you'd wake them up. They were gorgeous!
