Would you vote to re-join the EU in another referendum?

Simple question. If there is another referendum to re-join the EU, will you be voting to re-join?

This isn't to have a go at anyone who supported Brexit, or who supported Remain, it's just a quick straw poll. Thank you. Smile

If anyone is wondering, (or cares!) I think I will vote to re-join. (I won't say at this point what I voted for last time...)

Ever heard of the Scottish and Northern Irish currency?

Both of which are pegged to the Bank of England so are of no relevance in the discussion about the Euro.

Also 0% VAT on tampons

20% on Private School Fees. At least if we rejoined Labours pollcy of spite would be out the window.

Oh, I'm all up for 20% (or whatever) VAT on tampons in exchange for removal of VAT on education

Edited

You should mention this on the thread about the education tax

Try using them as currency in England.

So either way Labour’s woeful policy goes. The other parties will get rid of it or they’ll have to.

Do you understand what being pegged to the pound means? Or did you just feel the to post for the sake of it?

"As a child" was the clue...but thank you for clearing that up.

Many adults believed that it too.

And a whole lot of other nonsense.

i remember a leave voter telling me that EU citizens could move here with no bureaucratic issues at all, but that we could not do the same without loads of red tape.

As I had lived & worked in 4 EU countries since 1988 without so much as a stamp on my passport - even for 6 years in notoriously bureaucratic Italy where at the time Italian citizens had to renew their birth certificates every 6 month - was the wrong person to try to pull that one on.

Do you understand that Scottish and Northern Irish hard currency as in actual notes is not accepted in most places in England. I wasn't even able to exchange £40 Northern Irish into sterling in the local post office and was told to go to a main post office. They didn't accept it. It was put onto my card in the main post office and not exchanged.

The way the referendum was connived and orchestrated was scary. It was the project of some powerful men who had an agenda they forced through manipulation. Leave “won” by using a series of lies and appeals to base fears. Remain lost because of an inability to understand and explain the consequences.

I think Remain lost partly because of an inability to understand what many people were thinking.

I include myself in that.

I was really shocked by the result - and by the reaction, in some quarters, which was “well, we asked what they want, they’ve told us, & now we can’t let them have it.”

Not an edifying spectacle, and I’m not all that sure we’ve got beyond it.

i think also we’re not, as a nation, particularly good at referenda.

A couple i used to work for (well-travelled, highly educated, economically savvy, multi-lingual) voted Leave because they disliked EU bureaucracy & wanted to - as they put it - “Fire a shot across the bows”.

They were dismayed they won.

I don’t think the issue is the same with Scottish currency. My friend is from Belfast and she had this issue a lot when she came back to uni in Scotland with cash after being home for the holidays. When I lived in London, I’d get the occasional confused look at my Scottish notes and some places wouldn’t accept it because they said unfamiliarity with the appearance of the notes meant they were more worried about fraud but most places were fine. I’m not saying it didn’t happen but to say most places wrt Scottish notes would seem surprising in my experience.

Yet you agree that there's a problem. I had no problem with using sterling in any part of Northern Ireland or Scotland. However it's not reciprocal in England or many parts of Wales.

YellingAway · Yesterday 20:57

I don’t know as I would want to know exactly what the terms would be. If we were getting back in on the terms we previously had, yes, absolutely, but otherwise we would have no idea what we are voting for apart from a potential empty promise.

My friend had a frequent problem in Scotland with her Northern Irish notes not being accepted. I occasionally got a quizzical look in England with my Scottish notes (with the explanation of fraud fears given) but I don’t recall anyone actually not accepting them.

How has a thread on rejoining the EU turned into a discussion on whether different coloured but identical bank notes are accepted in shops?!

Yes as I never wanted to leave in the first place!

I understand that but it is of no relevance to the point around moving to the control of the ECB with the EURO. You seem to just be posting for the sake of it.

Really not as important as re-joining the EU - FFS!

Is that a personal attack on me?

I really don't care for your attitude regarding my "posting for the sake of it."

Meandthegherkin · Yesterday 23:06

What would the borrowing costs for France be now if the country wasn’t part of the Euro? As I understand it, the UK has a high proportion of index-linked debt and therefore inflation doesn’t help with the debt ratio (and Sunak didn’t like this but continued with it).

Sigh. People will post about what interests them and what they hope or fear will happen to them personally if Britain rejoins the EU.
Your ostensibly high minded scolding won’t win you any friends in this debate and even those of us who have no dog in the fight could well find your attitude and insistence more than wearying.
People can debate whatever resonates with them on this question, and moreover can advance their point on the issue in any way they choose.

TooBigForMyBoots · Today 04:22

The Brexiteers need to chill. The EU wouldn't have us back. We don't meet the criteria.
