Would you vote to re-join the EU in another referendum?

Simple question. If there is another referendum to re-join the EU, will you be voting to re-join?

This isn't to have a go at anyone who supported Brexit, or who supported Remain, it's just a quick straw poll. Thank you. Smile

If anyone is wondering, (or cares!) I think I will vote to re-join. (I won't say at this point what I voted for last time...)

A BIG, FAT YES FROM ME 😆

Europe itself isn’t in great shape. Look at the rise of AfD in Germany. When I was young, the idea that a far-right party could get something like a quarter of the vote (or maybe more) in a German election seemed absurd. And many think Le Pen has a chance of becoming the next French president!

All this is being fuelled by immigration, and that isn’t going to slow down. Quite the opposite in fact. Africa has the highest birth rate in the world, and the African population is going to double. In other words, the very thing that is driving Europe’s move to the right is only going to intensify.

envbeckyc · Yesterday 20:47

Since we left the EU we have had war on our continent caused by Russia and we have been hit by traffics from the USA and seen what having an unreliable president of the US can do to our country.

Personally the loss of the freedom of movement caused queues on my holidays that were exhausting!

Brexit has damaged our economy, which means that businesses, farmers and fishermen are bogged down with red tape making it harder to export goods, conversely it’s now more difficult and therefore to import products!

Brexit was always a fantasy sold to the gullible, prejudiced and uninformed populace.

The sooner it’s reserved the better!

As a particularly forthright woman once said - No, No, No ! Why on earth any right thinking woman in this country would wish to get back into bed with that shower of unelected, devious charlatans beats me. I’d rather queue for hours at passport control than give up our freedom in order to slip through the EU channel. But speaking of channels - I suppose re-joining would solve the ‘boats’ problem. Then we and our daughters could all sleep safely in our beds .. eh ?

And as any informed person said ‘WHAT?! If you didn’t vote in the EU elections that’s on you not the rest of us’.
Every single EU rep is elected, in similar ways to here in the UK.
You didn’t directly vote Burnham to be PM but people voted to elect him as MP
You didn’t vote Badenoch as leader of the Tories, but she is, and could be PM one day.
Believing mis-information isn’t an excuse for propagating it. Please do some homework.

We’ve got to be A LOT nicer this time round and stop making out Leavers are all thick racists. Most weren’t, although there were some nasty bastards.

I can’t see that happening. I don’t think there has ever been a thread about brexit without most posters accusing leave voters of being thick, racist, chavs, uneducated etc etc. Some even suggested in all seriousness that voters should take an exam before they were allowed to vote.

Even with all this some of the more balanced posts are about re-join not being simply a revert to remain and the issues with the euro etc

To the 20% that have voted No, what makes you not want to rejoin? How do you feel you’ve benefited from Brexit?

I don't want to join the Euro and give up our monetary policy to the ECB.

Same
and I don’t particularly agree with freedom of movement especially as it is in Europe now

Grower37 · Yesterday 21:29

Do people not think unrestricted free movement is a bit too much? Completely unrestricted.

Why does a french person or a dutch person have a more of a right to move here compared to an Indian citizen or an Australian or a Canadian?

Beryl92 · Yesterday 21:42

I absolutely would, but ironically, I don't think it is as clear cut as the decision not to leave should have been. There are drawbacks to rejoining that simply wouldn't have existed if we'd just stayed put. But I knew it was a terrible idea at the time to leave and I still think it was a terrible idea, and I blame David Cameron for rolling the dice on behalf of the country.

Freedom of movement cuts both ways, The reciprocity of it makes a big difference.

Yes, I never wanted to leave and certainly didn't vote for it!

I know young people who have gone to study and work in Europe recently on the appropriate visas.

What l wont miss is where l used to live before Brexit in a large UK city. Where the dozens of Greeks, Spaniards and Portuguese who owed thousands .Then would disappear without trace owing thousands in unpaid rent and student loans.

Nice money if you get it.

A case of take the money and run?

It’s the only safe thing to do from both an economic and defensive perspective.
I haven’t found or been shown any benefits of Brexit at all.
With an aggressive Russia and Trump’s USA we’re too small to go it alone. We need to be in Europe.

75 Brexit Benefits by Gully Foyle might be a good place to start.

Newbutoldfather · Yesterday 22:30

We really are rerunning the previous debate.

Being in the EU gives us (very significant) trading benefits and freedom of movement; as does being in the single market without full membership.

It also, in the long run, obliges us to join the Euro, whereas being in the single market does not.

It confers no security benefits either against Russia or the USA. It isn’t a military alliance of any kind. NATO does that for us, as does our nuclear deterrent.

Do those who keep talking of being better as part of a larger block actually want us to be the equivalent of a large state of the EU? Even the EU is pretty quiet on federation these days, but it sounds like some here would like to see it.

Trading blocks are really important these days. I am not so sure the EU is well configured to be a federation or that there is much desire for it. The democratic deficit still seems to be there with bureaucrats seeming to have too much power over major decisions.

We are still chasing that money now.
For some reason we just couldn't EU.

StaringAtTheWater · Yesterday 22:39

I voted to remain and I would vote to rejoin - if nothing else because I travel a fair bit, and I'm sick of the long queues at passport control.

But I'm not sure I could take much joy in it - it would mean the whole exercise of leaving was a colossal waste of time and money; which is so depressing when so much in this country is in need of investment.

Yes I do
unrestricted free movement was what mainly caused Brexit

A book based on an X thread published by the Bruges Group, a Eurosceptic think tank?? 😂 I don’t tend to waste time on propaganda.

we do need a priminister though that will actually give us a fair crack at this independence !

Who do you think would give it "a fair crack" and what exactly would they be doing differently?

LienekeS · Today 02:18

Anyone saying yes: they will only let us in on their terms. The pound will become Euros, imagine that!! Europe is in a mess, the pound will tank. I remember when the Dutch guilder became Euro and the devaluation was insane!!!

It will be less humiliating than Brexit was.
There is gravitas that comes from admitting an error.
