Just want to tell you all about Mrs W.

Just feeling a bit emotional this evening about my childhood.

Usual story, abuse, neglect, stepdad, mother who only wanted sons etc. It was about as bad as it could be really.

Sometimes I dwell on the bad stuff, then I remember Mrs W. She probably saved my life.

I was always filthy, I wasn't allowed to shower or bath unless my stepdad was in there with me so I just didn't do it. My clothes were often dirty or too small. She often had 'spare' clothes or shoes that didnt fit her daughter, my friend, and would tell me to try them on and then just wear them for the day. When i stayed over she said there was a family rule that everyone had to bathe each night and ran me the loveliest baths with bubbles and fancy soaps, it was heaven.

I would call on my friend in the mornings to walk to school, and Mrs W had always made too much breakfast, and overdid the sandwiches for lunch and would offer me the extras. As well as fruit that was about to turn so had to be eaten.

I told my friend when I started my period, and she obviously told her mum, her mum put leaflets and pads into my bag and never said a word, she put pads in there every month.

The way i viewed all of the things she did when I was a child/young teen is very different to how I see it now.

Now I know there were never extras, she made the stuff for me, she bought the clothes and shoes for me, the fruit wasn't going to turn, she just wanted to make sure I had something to eat later. There was no family rule about baths either.

Many years later, at this angels funeral, I spoke to her daughter and told her all about the things her mum did, she had no idea, she also hadn't realised, and her mum never said a word. She just quietly did what she could and never uttered a word.

No point to this post really, I just wanted to tell someone about Mrs W, I really wish she had been my Mum.

This made me quite tearful. We need more people like this in the world. I'm so glad you told her daughter, I wish you'd had a chance to tell Mrs W yourself.

Every child needs a champion. Just one person can make a difference in a child's life. Reminds me of Ian Wright and his teacher Mr Pigden. My children are grown up now but they had several friends who needed a champion, I was always happy to feed them and pass on coats/trainers and extra packed lunches. The smallest things can make a big difference.

I'm so sorry for your difficulties as a child ,but glad you had a Mrs W in your life, i knew a few Mrs W's in my time and like you i didn't understand until i was an adult, i do now and try to emulate them when i can. Pay it forward so to speak....

Very strange, I have just gotten into bed and it appears there is someone cutting onions in my bedroom 😭

In all seriousness OP, I’m sorry that happened to you and well done for finding your way out and forging a better life for yourself. Mrs W, what an angel. Thank you for telling us about her and the wonderful things she did, I have found that so moving.

OliviaBonas · Yesterday 21:04

Wow! I’m so glad you had her in your life. It sounds as though you’ve continued her legacy 🥰

Garfieldloveslasagnepie · Yesterday 21:22

Oh gosh that’s really moved me. What a lovely lovely lady

Mummyoflittledragon · Yesterday 21:30

Awww I’m so glad you had someone to love and care for you. ❤️ She sounds like an amazing woman. My dd was never friends with anyone to my knowledge, who was neglected, however, I have always cared for any child, who comes through my door as though they were my own. It sounds as if you had just the right amount of love from her to be as amazing as she was. ❤️

MauveFatball · Yesterday 21:33

This made me cry, thank goodness you had Mrs W watching over you.
And so glad you now have a lovely life.

I had a friend in my teens, who often missed school and I was never allowed in her house. We lost touch as she moved away.
Years later we ‘found’ each other and she admitted that she missed school as she had few clothes and her mum would spend any money going out, on booze, cigarettes, makeup etc so there was nothing left to go to launderette to get her clothes clean, the electric was cut off, they had bare floorboards and her mum, older brother and my friend all slept in the same bedroom as the ceiling had caved in in the other one but her mum didn’t let the landlord know in case she was then reported to SS regarding the poverty. When I told MY mum all this my mum got quite upset and said she wished she’d known back then as would have done more for my friend. We hardly had anything as my mum was a single parent too (1970s) but we were always fed, clean, clothed and warm.

What a truly wonderful woman Mrs W was. Thank you for sharing that @JustrememberingMrsW it restores faith in humanity and shows that there are good people in this world who just do good things quietly without fanfare and for no reward.

Her daughter must be so proud of her.
