Just want to tell you all about Mrs W.

Just feeling a bit emotional this evening about my childhood.

Usual story, abuse, neglect, stepdad, mother who only wanted sons etc. It was about as bad as it could be really.

Sometimes I dwell on the bad stuff, then I remember Mrs W. She probably saved my life.

I was always filthy, I wasn't allowed to shower or bath unless my stepdad was in there with me so I just didn't do it. My clothes were often dirty or too small. She often had 'spare' clothes or shoes that didnt fit her daughter, my friend, and would tell me to try them on and then just wear them for the day. When i stayed over she said there was a family rule that everyone had to bathe each night and ran me the loveliest baths with bubbles and fancy soaps, it was heaven.

I would call on my friend in the mornings to walk to school, and Mrs W had always made too much breakfast, and overdid the sandwiches for lunch and would offer me the extras. As well as fruit that was about to turn so had to be eaten.

I told my friend when I started my period, and she obviously told her mum, her mum put leaflets and pads into my bag and never said a word, she put pads in there every month.

The way i viewed all of the things she did when I was a child/young teen is very different to how I see it now.

Now I know there were never extras, she made the stuff for me, she bought the clothes and shoes for me, the fruit wasn't going to turn, she just wanted to make sure I had something to eat later. There was no family rule about baths either.

Many years later, at this angels funeral, I spoke to her daughter and told her all about the things her mum did, she had no idea, she also hadn't realised, and her mum never said a word. She just quietly did what she could and never uttered a word.

No point to this post really, I just wanted to tell someone about Mrs W, I really wish she had been my Mum.

What a lovely woman to have had in your life.

MoonWoman69 · 24/09/2026 18:15

That is so beautiful and has made me cry. What an absolute angel of a woman and very switched on. You were very lucky to have had her in your life. ❤️

TwinklySquid · 24/09/2026 18:38

Catsandcheese · 24/09/2026 18:53

What a lovely lady and I am so happy you have a lovely life now with your own precious family. I’m so sorry you’ve had that suffering in your life.

Greendiamondbee · 24/09/2026 19:11

This choked me up, both with sadness for your childhood at home and also for this angel of a lady. What a kind heart; I'm so glad that little you had a guardian.

RaininSummer · 24/09/2026 19:20

Lovely Mrs W.

ShutupLwren · 24/09/2026 19:21

@JustrememberingMrsW don't you worry about us readers, we all wanted to shed ugly tears didn’t we?!

I am so glad she was a presence in your life. What Mrs W did was a rare type of genuine kindness. Not because she wanted recognition for doing so, but because she made your life much more bearable with her actions.
I hope life is much better for you now. 💐
Rest in peace Mrs W, the world was better for you in it. 💐

Buffs · 24/09/2026 19:44

So pleased you have love and closeness in your life now, OP. As PPs have said, the world definitely needs more Mrs W’s.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 24/09/2026 20:53

Mrs W sounds like an amazing woman. She saw what was happening in plain sight and did what she could to make your life easier.

JoBrandsCleaner · 24/09/2026 21:12

I had a very similar childhood to yours, but unfortunately there was no Mrs W ☹️
My sister was vile to me as if my life wasn’t miserable enough. She was never gonna lower herself to be nice to me and talk to me as if I’m a human being, but she could of at least brought me a loaf of bread and a bit of cheese 🤔
I was surrounded by arseholes, teachers were horrible to me because I was like a tramp, not exactly ‘with it’ probably from lack of sleep/food and most other kids didn’t bother with me .
I also had a bath ‘companion’ when I was 9, (one of her many boyfriends) he ended up in prison for 6 years for that.
I’m so pleased to hear you had Mrs W, my daughter had a neglected
friend when she was 7/8 and there was always a meal and a bath for her at our house, (not to mention spending hours trying to get rid of her head lice)
The only person who ever cared about me was my Asian boyfriend, that could so easily have been another disaster the way I was, social services were suddenly interested in me, trying to split us up. We’ve been married for 35 years now, I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I’d never met him.

There are some wonderful human being in the world. I’m glad you had Mrs W in your life

I read a wonderful book recently, Poor by Katrina O’Sullivan and it’s full of how kind, and not so kind people’s actions shaped her life - she had a Mrs W too. It really made me want to be a better person, not that I’m bad anyway, but more to try and actually do the small things.

I read Poor by Katrina O’ Sullivan also.
A real eye opener. She’s some woman !

I think you should give Mrs W her full name on this thread. She deserves it.
So glad she was there for you OP

2017SoFarSoGood · 24/09/2026 21:51

That made me cry. What a woman she was - it made me want to try just a little harder to be like Mrs W!

hope life got better, OP💕

BatteriesNotIncluded76 · 24/09/2026 21:55

Weeellokthen · 24/09/2026 22:39

sending love to the little girl that you were, and who is still a part of you OP

T1Dmama · 25/09/2026 00:16

My mum had quite a sad childhood, I wish she’d had a Mrs W. But of course back then people believed it wasn’t their place and that what happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors….
