Been unwell with a bad cold for a few days. Haven’t eaten much but am now hungry and unsure what to eat. What’s your sick day comfort meals?

MyOliveViewer · 22/09/2026 17:18

Sandwich, toasties, crisps and I build up to a jacket potato.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 22/09/2026 17:19

Buttered toast.
Pesto pasta with cheese.
Ready salted crisps.

Autumnallaround · 22/09/2026 17:19

Processed white bread, butter and marmalade.

pastadish · 22/09/2026 17:21

Anything you fancy. It was a cold and (presumably) not gastric so you don’t need to stick to white toast

SoThatsTheWayItIs · 22/09/2026 17:24

Pretzels. The salt really helps, especially if your stomach feels off. When I start to feel better I move onto salty carbs like toast and salted butter, pizza, Mcdonalds fries, hash browns

Whisperwaves · 22/09/2026 17:27

Toast
Crisps
Soup

SubmarineDream · 22/09/2026 17:27

If I am really ill then little bits of apple and cream crackers, building up to a cinnamon and raisin bagel. With a cold, Heinz cream of tomato soup and buttered toast. And Lucozade.

Minestronemusings · 22/09/2026 17:29

Start with crackers and a little ginger ale

Progress to Marmite on toast (not much butter)

Then pure foods like a little pear compote

Then home made chicken soup!

You can’t beat it!

Pimp up a supermarket version with a little lemon juice and parsley

Or make at home and keep it in the freezer for occasions like this.

Or just make proper home made chicken stock and keep that in the freezer to form the basis of chicken soup when you next make it

There is a good recipe at the end of this article:

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2011/jan/13/how-make-perfect-chicken-soup

Live on that for a couple of days; you can’t beat it!

Hope you feel better soon op!

How to make perfect chicken soup

Can anyone make better chicken soup than a Jewish mother, and can a good one really cure colds and soothe all ills?

Ooh yes. Me too.

Any kind of home made soup with a cold.

Lomonald · 22/09/2026 17:30

It depends really. I normally eat what I fancy , I wasn't well recently with a virus/covid and I was living off crackers and spreading cheese and pickled beetroot, for a few days, and then I added some melon and strawberries,

so just eat what you want.

DilemmaDelilah · 22/09/2026 17:46

For me it has to be easy to eat, so what I call 'fork food'. A good macaroni cheese, tuna pasta, and cottage pie are my favourites. Or just toast.

Eviebeans · 22/09/2026 17:49

Toast and marmite

AlwaysExtraHot · 22/09/2026 17:50

Chicken soup, shop-bought (fresh kind in a tub) with lots of added lemon juice, fresh white bread, maybe buttered.
Scrambled eggs, done in a little bowl in the microwave. Very comforting and nourishing.
I might make myself a baked potato, nice and simple with butter and salt or maybe tuna too if I'm more hungry/at the point where I need flavour.
I sometimes have miso soup as a snack/drink too.

Bumdishcloths · 22/09/2026 20:19

If I’ve got the energy, my favourite comfort meal is minced beef with onions and peas in gravy, served over mash.

In reality it will usually be buttered white toast with a mug of Bovril, or store bought “fancy” soup from the chilled section with a high veg content.

Franxi · 22/09/2026 20:21

Something spicy usually.

Bumdishcloths · 22/09/2026 20:22

Oh! And Bachelors cheese and broccoli pasta’n’sauce because it’s utter filth and I adore it.

Harry12345 · 22/09/2026 20:23

Toast
crisps
fruit
sweet tea
lucazade

EmmaB1309 · 22/09/2026 20:24

Buttery toast with really good bread!

Latenightreader · 22/09/2026 20:24

Tinned rice pudding is my go to when I need food but just have no enthusiasm. Always helps.

Banana and custard or banana on toast (although I had a bad experience with a banana so am off them).

FieryA · 22/09/2026 20:24

Dal and rice
Yoghurt and rice with potato curry (no gravy)
Soup and cheese toast

bangalanguk · 22/09/2026 20:31

Poached eggs on toast

spideesense · 22/09/2026 20:35

Chicken noodle soup with lots of added ginger and chilli in the broth or Lentil daal, rice and spinach. If I’m really not in the mood to cook, beans on toast with grated cheese.

GarlicSomething · 22/09/2026 20:37

I know I'm getting ill when I start craving tinned rice pudding. Sadly, the dairy-free version (which was perfect) seems to have disappeared, so now I just have to recognise I'm about to be ill without my comfort food 😢 Heinz Big Soup comes in a poor second, but at least I can get it.

Recovering always makes me need a ton of carbs, OP, so it's cake all the way!

Feel better soon.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/09/2026 20:46

The lady who said tinned tomato soup or scrambled eggs on toast - they are exactly mine - I will also add in Jason’s sourdough crumpets with butter and a poached egg on top
