Anyone else concerned about the price of fuel?

Yesterday it was £1.66 near us a litre and today it’s £1.71. It seems to be climbing by the day and although I hear tuts and sighs most people just seem to be accepting it. The government hasn’t said a word - but mind you they’ve made approximately £130million in excess VAT since Feb when this conflict started. I recently switched to a hybrid so it’s not costing me quite as much but I wonder how high the government is prepared to let it go before they will slash the VAT?

I am worried, because of the location of our jobs we spend a lot on fuel, my child has just started university and is commuting daily which whilst saving us a fortune on living accommodation means that fuel costs are pushed even higher. It’s a really big chunk of our family income. Because where we live is fairly isolated public transport is not an option. Diesel is now over £2 a litre and petrol is approaching that. We combine journeys wherever we can, for example stopping at the supermarket on the way home from work rather than making a separate journey but for us cars are a necessity just to get to university and work. My elderly parents rely on oil for their central heating so this really isn’t a good situation for them with winter approaching either.

Not worried about it as not much I can do about it. Try to worry about only the things I can control and then remind myself no point worrying about them as I can control them :)

Adding extra costs to our business which requires a lot of diesel (electric options not yet available, or likely to be). We also live 10 min drive from nearest pint of milk in either direction and there are no buses, so fuel costs matter.

However, there’s no point worrying about what you can’t control. We adapt and make everything work, just as we always have. We live frugally but happily.

I think the government absolutely could step in and make things easier by slashing their cut. Unfortunately I too can’t really reduce how many miles I do as I care for an elderly parent who is 30 miles away and public transport is a bit naff round here!

Its putting a strain on my finances

I changed my job two years ago and now work local , because it was costing so much in diesel , now Im thinking of getting the bike out ( not ideal as its rural, no street lighting etc )

Luckily DH drives electric so we use that car for leisure , mines just to and from work now.

No point in worrying about it, it's happening and we cant change it . So I just cut the cloth a wee bit tighter and manage to make the wage cover the bills

Dismayed it's rising again certainly, but not much I can do except cut down driving to essential journeys only. I think it was nearly £2 a litre of petrol last time it went shooting up, so the government are unlikely to do anything to help us out, like reducing tax on fuel.

The cut that should be slashed is the oil company profits

the tax at least is used to make our lives better through investment in NHS and education

No, as I have an electric car. If I didn’t I would worry as I work 30 miles away from home.

I don't worry about it, but I do feel sympathy for my parents (and many others) who have heating oil.

It is going to be an expensive winter for sure.

EDIT - sorry I have no idea I quoted you! I do agree we shouldn't be cutting the fuel VAT though, it seems short sighted in the grand scheme of the amount things the government need to be spending money on.

Oil company profits come more from other areas of their business than sales of petrol. Half the price you pay is fuel duty and VAT.

Moreover they already pay a headline marginal rate of 78%.

Filled up my car yesterday, 2.88euros where I am. But I'm worried about the cost of heating oil, we need to fill up our tank but I don't know how we'll afford to buy the minimum 1000l at once. We can heat with electricity thankfully but not as well as with the oil boiler and also means we can only have hot water through the electric boiler which costs a lot to run and is slow to heat.

We live rurally so depend on our car, we also have oil central heating. Worried about price and also possible shortages in future.

I caught a glimpse of a petrol station on Google streetview yesterday when I was looking at a house and couldn’t believe how cheap petrol was when I looked at the archived photos of the price sign. I live alone, cycle or get the train to work, and have no caring responsibilities any more so I can eke out a tank over a month if I don’t have any big trips planned. But, I am attending a wedding in East Anglia soon, really in the sticks with no public transport, and have had to take out for an extra tank and a half of petrol from a holiday Monzo pot as it’s such a long drive and I can’t cover it from my household budget.

I feel for people who have to commute to work . We all know when prices rocket they rarely reduce by any meaningful amount .

Every time I fill the car up, I really want to punch that orange cunt in the face.

That didn’t take long. If they think there’s a stack of profit in oil, why don’t you go into the oil
business? If you’re feeling philanthropic, feel free to then distribute your spare profit to the masses

At £1.71 a litre, at the moment the government takes 81.45p (mix of fuel duty and VAT). Thst’s rather a lot and leaves the oil companies very little.

The price increase in heating oil is terrifying. People have to pay upfront and it’s usually 500 litres minimum. There’s no cap. Would cost around £590 to fill up today which is over £100 more than only a few weeks back, and that itself was a big increase compared to before Trump sent it skywards.

The Government hasn’t said a word AND they’re planning to put up taxes again in the Autumn budget.

I couldn't believe the chutzpah of the government when they recently introduced their new measures to supposedly enable drivers to shop around and avoid retailers who are taking advantage and overcharging... like they themselves aren't already by far the biggest cause of rip-off fuel prices!

E10 petrol was also a clever trick and a fiendish way of sneaking in a near 10% reduction in the efficiency of petrol - meaning that drivers would have to spend an extra 10% to get the same useful amount of (heavily-taxed) fuel.

£1.99.9 seen in the SE yesterday. The government won't do anything. It suits their agenda to get everyone in EV's, High fuel prices help!

I mean not for a while, Iran has attacked Saudi oil lines and the strait of hormuz is still disputed Territory so our supply of oil is going to be absolutely slashed meaning prices will rocket further I expect. Blame Trump for this shit show...the chickens he released in February are coming home to roost now.

It suits everyone to get EVs. We got solar panels and a battery in the summer. Our energy bill this month will be about £25 for everything. That includes charging 2 EVs, one of which does 50 miles a day. It’s a complete no brainer. During the heat wave our bills were -£10 a month because we can sell the excess back to the grid. They’ll pay for themselves in about 4-5 years, but more importantly we’re much more protected against power outages, megalomaniacs, and chaotic price hikes. Eventually we will run out of dinosaur juice. It’s a finite source and it’s not going to get cheaper.

I am concerned at the impact on bus companies, on businesses that do deliveries, and on road haulage. Absolutely no sympathy for those who do short journeys where they could walk, or who have a large car such as the usual BMW drivers.

It affects us all.
