So many cities have gone downhill since COVID. But which is the worst?

Was light-hearted comment nothing more

PleasantPedant · 16/09/2026 00:44

It's only funny if we're both laughing.

Tempted to post about Wigan's shit city centre because saying it's not a city is pointless pedantry. 😃

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 16/09/2026 00:45

Why Wigan?

PleasantPedant · 16/09/2026 00:47

You know why.

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 16/09/2026 00:48

PleasantPedant · 16/09/2026 00:47

PleasantPedant · 16/09/2026 00:50

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 16/09/2026 00:57

I lost contact with the pie eaters in 92 I'm 400miles north.
It wasn't all about Wigan.

Agree with this. DH is from there and we went last year for the first time in several years. We stayed near brindley place which wasnt too bad, but around new street station and the bullring was seriously grim.

Bangor. Barely anything left there now shop wise. Local council seem to just want to let it rot. Absolute disgrace

Co.Down?

PartyHard · 16/09/2026 01:18

There’s some really blatant racism on this thread. I hope all the racists stay away from ‘shit hole’ London - we don’t want your type anyway!

Popstarrrrr · 16/09/2026 01:18

Birmingham has changed a lot and for the worse. I live in London and in a hotspot for phone thefts, but Birmingham is the only place I wouldn't take my phone out until I was on the train back to London.

Neverstopwondering · 16/09/2026 01:26

Birmingham

Never met anyone that has been there and says anything nice about it

Drove through centre of Birmingham once with my kids after we had to an event there. My kids were in shock about just how terrible it is considering on of England's major cities.

piscofrisco · 16/09/2026 02:00

Derby. There is just nothing there really.
Luton-grim.

AWeekAndADay · 16/09/2026 02:00

Newcastle-upon-Tyne awful every couple of steps drunk, druggies laying about the main streets, others begging. It has always been like that but now it's real bad, every few steps your being asked for money or harassed walking around

I'm in London and a lot central and Southern areas I'm in are doing well overall but you do see people like this. I feel sorry and want them to be helped, but it's reasonable to still be scared. Mentally ill/drugged people can be dangerous to themselves and others : look at that woman in Covent Garden this year who stabbed 4 men with scissors. Luckily she wasn't strong and did little damage but still an awful experience.

Yes this is a very current topic in Nottingham atm owing to the recent tragic murders of two university students and a caretaker. It’s not the fault of the psychotic people who are the perpetrators of these crimes, who have been terribly let down by the failure of a string of public services who didn’t do their jobs properly, probably in part due to under-funding, as have the families of the victims.

Nottingham has always had an edge and it went through a very rough patch with the council going bankrupt a while back but it’s dragging itself back up by the bootstraps again. There is a lot going on in the city that is positive too.

supersonicginandtonic · 16/09/2026 02:19

Derby! Absolute 💩 hole!

MincePieAny1 · 16/09/2026 02:23

Not true, actually. Cyngor Gwynedd is trying several things to improve Bangor.

I think Cardiff is lovely. The castle. Bute park. Roath park. The Victorian arcades with cool independent shops and the big shopping centre with the chains . River boat down to the bay. Big chain restaurants and lots of independents. Great gin bars and cool cocktail bars. Small enough to get around easily but big enough for lots to be going on. Penarth with the pier. Great weekend break.

You get people with vulnerabilities and without homes in all cities.

Oh yes Cardiff has so much going for it. A beautiful city, and a capital one.

MincePieAny1 · 16/09/2026 03:01

Croydon may not be a city per se, but it's in a city. I suppose its vileness is a comment on London really.
