So many cities have gone downhill since COVID. But which is the worst?

Luton has to be up there.

I'm more saddened by the cities that used to be lovely and have just got sadder and sadder. Truro is my home town. When I compare it to the city I moved to 30 years ago it makes me want to weep.

My dad came from Truro, used to enjoy visiting there, what’s happened to make it so bad now ?

MotherTuckinGenius · 15/09/2026 23:09

@MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNSit was my first time (accidentally) in Edinburgh, lots of one way roads , traffic lights always on red (for ever) and people and cars/vans/bicycles darting from everywhere! Very beautiful though 🤣

Without getting drawn into any city/town pointless pedantry...ss
It's not pointless pedantry.
Somewhere like Croydon just doesn't have a city centre.

There are probably worse ones, but I don't vibe well with Liverpool. I know there's some nice buildings but it doesn't feel relaxed.

That’s sad to read. I’ve been here for 40 years and love it.

🙄 why so negative, what’s the best city centre you’ve ever been too? I think Liverpool is fantastic.

Liverpool Is fabulous and puts my city to shame.

Northampton was shockingly bad when i had the misfortune to visit a few years ago.

I grew up near there. Was horrified when I last visited. It used to be a solid respectable county town, now it's like something out of a disaster movie. (And yes I know it's not a city.)

I would say Corby. There is nothing nice about the whole place.

Apart from the clean, well-maintained, privately owned main shopping streets, neither of which has a single vape shop? The plentiful parking spaces, wide roads and the total lack of traffic jams? The thousands of acres of town centre woodland, plus Coronation Park and the Wessy? The modern theatre, international swimming pool, library and cinema within 60 seconds’ walk of the centre? And don’t forget the incredible people who will pick you up every time you fall down. They’ve managed to maintain a strong sense of community, unlike many other areas. I love Corby, and so do most people who live there.

I was in Northampton last week and I couldn’t find a single shop I wanted to go in. If anyone has any recommendations for women’s clothes shops there, I’m all ears. I will say the bit around the Guildhall is lovely, aside from the drug users who sit in the square.

Arran2024 · 15/09/2026 23:22

Ok, if I can't have Aberystwyth and apparently Carmarthen doesn't count either so I'm going with Brighton. Last time I visited was for a concert at the Pavillion where a fight broke out a few rows behind me, an usher was badly beaten up, police were called. It is always dirty, the car parks are ancient and feel unsafe, the walk from the station to town centre can be unnerving, and so many derelict buildings.

@charliehungerford Truro is not bad at all. It’s just one person’s opinion. Everyone else on here disagrees with them anyway. So 🤷‍♀️

TaptheCap · 15/09/2026 23:27

Coventry was horrendous pre COVID, I dread to think what it's like now.

Salford doesn't even have a city centre so that's got to be the worst.

Denim4ever · 15/09/2026 23:31

I was very glad DS decided not to go to Durham for uni. I accompanied him to the offer holder day because it was a really early start to get there from home. I spent the day looking round the city. The empty shops were a whole new level of empty compared to where we live. There were clubs and cafes but it was very hollow and empty and the divide twixt posh colleges and city was more marked than Oxford or Cambridge

PleasantPedant · 15/09/2026 23:32

@snurtifier, it is not a city but it's a large town that's going to attract people from the surrounding area, as somewhere like Reading, Bournemouth, Kingston or Guildford might.

Somewhere like Maidenhead or Slough won't. You'd go to London or a nearby town for anything more than basic or food shopping.

It was grim in Hanley 15 years ago, can’t think it would have improved since! Not a nice place to walk through alone in the evening when shops are closed.

Birmingham and Manchester both feel fine in the daytime but I much prefer Manchester at night - Birmingham has an edge that makes me want to get out of there as quickly as possible.

God I went to university in Staffordshire and lived just down the road from Hanley and really like it - that was early 90's though......

I’ve just had a week in Edinburgh - as a tourist, walking miles. There didn’t seem to be all that much traffic on most of the roads, lots of pedestrian crossings only a few of which we had to wait for long….a city centre in which people are prioritized over cars, perhaps?!
