So many cities have gone downhill since COVID. But which is the worst?

We accidentally drove through Luton a few years ago and it was very run down.

Menopausalsourpuss · 15/09/2026 19:22

Just spent the day in Manchester - that seemed pretty bad.

Joolsin · 15/09/2026 19:27

I immediately thought of Luton, pre-Covid it was bad, can't imagine what it must be like now. Was in Poole in 2019 - beautiful Victorian buildings when you looked up, but street level was grim

Whisperwaves · 15/09/2026 19:29

I haven't been to every city centre in the UK, so can't really compare them all.

PleasantPedant · 15/09/2026 19:29

Poole isn't a city.

Delia65 · 15/09/2026 19:31

Bangor. Barely anything left there now shop wise. Local council seem to just want to let it rot. Absolute disgrace

Madamecholetsbonnet · 15/09/2026 19:32

I was shocked at how many more beggars there seem to be in Manchester compared to London. It seems to have got so much worse in the past couple of years.

I think the most grim town in the Uk I have visited is Barrow in Furness.

To be fair, don’t know what it used to be like but it’s a hellhole now.

Ilovemyshed · 15/09/2026 19:35

Southend is pretty terrible

There are some nice bits, but there is a lot of grot.

RowsOfFlowers · 15/09/2026 19:36

Preston

Favouritefruits · 15/09/2026 19:36

🙄 why so negative, what’s the best city centre you’ve ever been too? I think Liverpool is fantastic.

allthemind · 15/09/2026 19:36

Hull seemed pretty grim to me recently

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 15/09/2026 19:37

Luton has to be up there.

I'm more saddened by the cities that used to be lovely and have just got sadder and sadder. Truro is my home town. When I compare it to the city I moved to 30 years ago it makes me want to weep.

Manchester is great!

PleasantPedant · 15/09/2026 19:39

St Asaph and St Davids seem to be thriving.

Itsmomnotmum64 · 15/09/2026 19:39

Birmingham City Centre is disgusting. I am Birmingham born and bred, and now I hate going “up town” as we Brummies say.

There is an undercover area between our two main railway stations. This has become the area for the homeless to sleep. There are mattresses, people passed out in pools of vomit or urine. Drug addicted people begging and grabbing your coat.

Come on Prime Minister Burnham - you said you would end homelessness!

The bronx isn’t a city and it’s not in the UK.

Birmingham gets my vote

It was grim in Hanley 15 years ago, can’t think it would have improved since! Not a nice place to walk through alone in the evening when shops are closed.

Birmingham and Manchester both feel fine in the daytime but I much prefer Manchester at night - Birmingham has an edge that makes me want to get out of there as quickly as possible.

BlueBandedButterfly · 15/09/2026 19:49

Born and raised in Birmingham and would say it is the worst out of the big cities I have lived/stayed/visited.

DarkLion · 15/09/2026 19:50

I’m from a Yorkshire city that has already been mentioned on this thread 😅 but I love Manchester, can only tolerate London if it’s for a short time but went to Birmingham this year and absoloutely hated it. Couldn’t move for begging from Birmingham new street to the city centre and just didn’t like the vibe. I’m sure the people are lovely just wasn’t for me

MintedOnVinted · 15/09/2026 19:52

On the opposite end, Ely is one of the most beautiful
