So many cities have gone downhill since COVID. But which is the worst?

Surprised at people saying Manchester. It was grim in the 90s but went rather posh after the IRA bombed it.

Agree Leicester has really done downhill, last time I was there was a couple of years ago and it was bad.

I think it was better before the bomb.

PrincessofWills · 15/09/2026 20:39

Bath is fabulous, and for towns and villages I love Abingdon and Evesham.

It’s a talking point

I always imagine the people who reply to these sorts of threads with the quoted contribution are struggling socially and don’t realise how rude they are being.

I do too but I like grim places - bit more character somehow.

OverpricedCupcake · 15/09/2026 20:41

Glasgow has gone horribly downhill which is a shame.

St Asaph and St Davids seem to be thriving.

St David’s is ok thanks to the tourists but hasn’t it lost its GP surgeries?

Papyrophile · 15/09/2026 20:42

Plymouth is my nearest city, and I think it is getting things right. The former department stores have been leased to one of the big local company's for office space, and there is a new huge medical diagnostic hub taking shape about 500m downtown. So it won't be necessary to clog up the big hospital for tests. At the same time, a new electronic patient recording system is being rolled in, so all records will be shared across the city. From where we are, it looks as if things are going okay.

DoohickyJune · 15/09/2026 20:43

Some of us need to know the difference between a city and a town….
and yes, how about a lovely UK place thread instead of miserable slurs on other people home areas

Stoke-on-Trent
To be fair, don’t know what it used to be like but it’s a hellhole now.

It's always been a dump.

Isthismykarma · 15/09/2026 20:43

I am so shocked at people saying Manchester

Iliketulips · 15/09/2026 20:44

Might not get first place for the worst, but Gloucester had to be up there.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 15/09/2026 20:45

Manchester has grown on me a little bit. It's not a patch on Liverpool, but it isn't a total shithole. Get away from Piccadilly and the Arndale and it has some lovely buildings. And don't even bother with the Christmas market, it's awful.

Papyrophile · 15/09/2026 20:45

@Isthismykarma , why does it shock you?

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 15/09/2026 20:45

Aberdeen compared to how it used to be
The black& grey clad wannabe road men wannabes.
The Ebike twats re enacting scenes from mad max.
The free bus passes for 14-22yr olds little fuckers go on tour causing mayhem.

It's across the UK it's not confined to a handful of places
One incident at Elgin bus station .a 55yr old bus driver didn't go home after work.
He was killed by a punch from a 15yr old.
Staff and passengers alike are terrorised by these kids.
One kid was caught with an axe whilst on tour.

DoohickyJune · 15/09/2026 20:45

Oh, just seen a nice area thread from June and someone mentioned Brum!
as this was mentioned by a PP on this thread, just goes to show!
subjective and divisive nonsense

mtobrokeme · 15/09/2026 20:45

Doncaster. Never be a city on my eyes but it has recently been made one. Horrendous place that I have the misfortune of having to visit on Friday!

Coventry

Shame. I used to live there and loved Coventry. Haven't been there for a few years though

It isn’t ridiculous. It’s exactly the point. It’s a pointless thread because no one has been to them all and therefore all you get is a never ending stream of “I recently visited X town centre and it was grim”. There’s absolutely no way to compare and contrast.

Edited

I'm finding it interesting. It seems people can have opinions without having tried every possible example of something. And trends appear because the same cities come up over and over.
I think M&S do the best mince pies but I haven't tried every single mince pie in the world.

Of my relatively limited recent city centre visiting, I'd say Leicester is the worst (of approx 6 cities I've visited recently).

Livelovebehappy · 15/09/2026 20:47

Bradford. I live here and house just gone on the market. It’s awful - I would say the cesspit of the North by far…

sillypossumsmum · 15/09/2026 20:48

Nottingham. I’m glad to have left

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 15/09/2026 20:48

Wrexham. I'm not sure if anyone's already mentioned it, but it's worth repeating.

I am too. I’ve been there lots, and love it.

Bournemouth Council should be ashamed of themselves!

I was there in the summer visiting a friend who had rented an airbnb - and so many boarded up shops in the city centre and toothless drug addict types hanging around dirty streets. I remember it as a child in the 70s when it was quite lovely, full of hanging baskets full of flowers and vibrant ice cream shops and smart department stores. It seemed quite twee then and smart. It is a right dump now. I certainly wouldn't recommend it.

Can anyone from Bournemouth tell us what has happened for it to fall so bad?

Due to the large number of rehabs around the area which caused the increase in the drug and alcohol addicts, coupled with a lack of police presence. My brother lives in the town centre and I’ve lost count the number of times we’ve seen the addicts injecting themselves (in broad daylight) The worse was a couple of months ago when we saw one of them defecating 🙈

EarthlyNightshade · 15/09/2026 20:50

SpottyAlpaca · 15/09/2026 20:30

Agreed. Of the cities I know well, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol & Cheltenham are all thriving & great places to visit.

Cheltenham's not a city but visiting there recently and comparing to other similar towns, it's certainly on less of a downward spiral than many other places.

zipitpls · 15/09/2026 20:50

I love threads like this. It reminds me of places I haven’t been to for years, informs me about others and is generally interesting.

It’s a shame if people are personally offended but I doubt many of us literally live in the city centres of these places. If someone mentions Manchester and you live in Urmston or Altrincham or somewhere then yes you live in Manchester but behave, you don’t live IN Manchester as in, you can see the Arndale from your lounge window! Or do you?
