Sydney Sweeny Naked Advert - athletes reaction correct or an over reaction that gives the advert a lot more publicity?

Personally I think a naked actress with sports equipment is a bit tacky and obviously aimed at men but I don't know if it was a massive affront to women athletes? Sydney wasn't pretending to be an athlete and the athletics paraphernalia was to advertise sports betting......not my cup of tea but I don't see how it was diminishing womens sport really

In addition why no outrage about the countless other athletes in bikini shots etc. or the modelling of other actresses? Yes Sweeney was not liked by a lot of women generally and I don't think that is a fabrication.

I don’t know. None of us can read their minds.

Just like you’ve no idea how these women felt about SS prior to this issue.

There is a long history of sportswomen and 'glamour' modelling and the bikini shot seems just par for the course for the tabloids. If this current outrage is genuine I think you have got to ask is it something about Sweeny specifically?

Well Sweeney has made enemies of liberals in the US with her MAGA support and unashamed performing for the male gaze so she was always going to be an easy target for a pile on from sportswomen. The great jeans advert probably didn't sit well in a diverse athletic community either.

Let's face it a lot of women don't like Sweeney and I think this is the reason for a lot of the outrage and to my mind double standards when she accused of somehow single handedly sexualising sport.

Hi Sid....

But it was a massive affront to quite a few women athletes.

It’s not for you to decide differently unless you’re also a female athlete?

This is a silly attitude - am I not allowed an opinion on anything that doesn't directly affect me? It's not for you to decide what interests me.

Notsurewhattodonowattheend · 17/09/2026 09:44

Why were female athletes affronted by something that has nothing to do with them?

fmlnotagain · 17/09/2026 10:14

I think those criticising her are just bitter and jealous. The girl is hot! Female athletes let themselves down, just take old shitty legs in the hydrox as an example.

Why would they be bitter and jealous?
What a misogynistic take on the situation.

Women can have an opinion on another woman and her actions without it being driven by jealousy.

They obviously think it does. Why is that a problem?

I don’t think it is a problem.

I also think, I am allowed to shrug snd think they are confused and hysterical.

I don’t think anyone is “ragging her for the way she looks”.

I think they are, quite rightly, disappointed that she is helping to perpetuate the objectification of female athletes. Of course the men behind this campaign and the men ogling her are far worse.

They have just had to issue guidelines to broadcasters to stop them taking angles and shots of female athletes that are gratuitously sexual. That’s the arena that female athletes find themselves in.

Edited

I cant really understand that. Every part of a female athlete is muscle so any shot from any angle is muscle. That doesnt strike me as sexual at all.

Ah that wonderful misogynistic slur which is applied to women displaying emotion or a strong opinion.

@MickyMoonshine I have not called you out publicly! I’ve no idea what you look like! I’d like to think it’s a conversation without anyone knowing who we are. The photos debate is very public and they have targeted a woman who is not trying to be them! Let’s face it, her body is not the shape of most female athletes and is this what they don’t like?

What?

Have a google to find out what I mean. Taking shots of their bottoms in the small shorts, compromising angles of high jumpers and pole vaulters. It was an initiative that came from female athletes themselves.

They can have an opinion something’s completely unrelated to them about another woman. And I am entitled to do the same in reference to them.

🤷🏻‍♀️

Having thought about this a bit, I've come to the conclusion that of course a sleazy 'prediction market' sports gambling company is going to have sleazy ads.

Sweeney is playing to her target demographic, which is why they love her so much – she's not amazingly stunning imo, just young and attractive, but of course the chuds who like her adore that she's playing into what they want in a woman; smiling sexual self-objectification with no strong opinions.

She's just posing titillatingly with sports equipment – no one thinks she's actually an athlete, they know she's just an actress trying to make money before a misogynistic society decides she's too old. I find it distasteful, but personally I'm not overly bothered by it.

Well maybe it's because i'm a female. When i see shots of their bottoms ,I just think how amazingly toned they look. I dont have sexual thoughts about them. Maybe a man would be triggered to have other kinds of thouthts. The thing about thw pole vault is that getting your bum over the bar is an essential part of the skill. I'm sure they do close up shots of Mondo's bum.

So you’re saying that female athletes, who have experienced this, and asked for change, are imagining it? Or overreacting? Or should just put up with it? What’s your take on it? Apart from “I personally don’t sexualise women so it’s ok”.

No. If they feel it's gratuitous then fair enough. It's their bums going over the bar, not mine. I'm just making the point that not every person watching is sitting there thinking ' phwoar'.

Calling them hysterical for having an opinion and speaking out is misogynistic.

Disagreeing with them isn't but you should be able to disagree and still respect their opinion (and right to voice that opinion) without resorting to misogynistic comments.

Are you saying it's only inappropriate if EVRYONE watching thinks it is? That's not how these things work!

Thinking they are overreacting and centering themselves in a situation that has nothing to do with them is not misogyny.

But I would agree, considering their behaviour “hysterical” is inaccurate. When, I reflect more carefully, what I actually think it is, is “narcissistic.”

HTH

You are entitled to that opinion and I respect your right to voice it. I don't have to agree, but I also wouldn't tell you that you were wrong to have an opinion or try to silence you.

That's the point I'm making.

Notsurewhattodonowattheend · 17/09/2026 13:01

If that’s your point- why did you specifically engage me? I never said they weren’t allowed to sound off.

Mintypanda · 17/09/2026 13:05

I find this woman unbearably annoying and I honestly don’t know why. It’d be easy to say it’s jealousy given that I am oldish with a physique that is in many respects the opposite of Sydney’s. But I don’t think it’s that as I find many young actresses much more beautiful and look at them in admiration and a wistful “sigh… must be nice to look that way”. I also grew up in the era of Nuts, Zoo, Playboy, Baywatch and what have you and none of these models or actresses bothered me in the slightest. Is it just because Sydney is bloody everywhere all the time? Or that she kind of illustrates that an unrealistically good body is enough to cause unending worship and admiration from most men? As to the ad, it’s tacky and tasteless but in no way a comment on female in sports. One thing I will say for Sydney is she knows how to make money, generate rage and therefore clicks. She’s a good businesswoman.

I don’t think “every person” is the problem though is it?

If one woman feels humiliated and objectified Then that’s enough for me.
