Found my 1990 Sainsbury's Christmas grocery receipt in an old box

I can't find the old thread so apologies....but I have found another receipt (of mine, like the previous one ha ha)
This is the itemised grocery bill from Sainsbury's, Dec 22 1990 🫨 I paid by cheque ! It must have been our 'big shop' but there's no celebratory turkey so I assume that was ordered separately. Hope the pics don't take too long....
I have no idea why it ended up in my scrap box of tickets, memorabilia etc. If it was a particularly memorable Christmas eludes my memory now 🤷‍♀️

67p for a pack of butter, those were the days!

That's not as astonishingly cheap as I was anticipating to see. I think you've bought a lot of "raw" ingredients which can still be bought quite cheap.

Just came on to say I saw Peter Stringfellow in Sainsbury’s Nine Elms once 🤣 6 cokes for £1.19 though!

@RedTagAlan surprisingly, given my penchant for squirrelling, I don't ! Plus I don't know if I paid, or if it was then partner. We would have split it anyway.
I also found the receipt from Majestic Wines for our order when we had a house warming. I could weep !

Carrots seem expensive for 35 years ago

I think it more suggests they are probably too cheap now.

@StockingsByTheFire yes I was very much cook from scratch and we never had much ready prepped (god knows what the party food aisle was like then !) I still ate meat tho', so we would have put in an order for a 'good' bird from somewhere else, maybe Herne Hill...

I can't read the prices but agree that you have to bear in mind wages. 67p for butter. Now costs 4 or 5 times as much. Probably wages have increased similarly over the last 35 years. Until the last five years cost of living increases, food had been getting increasingly cheap in relation to household income. Back in the 20th century food costs comprised a larger proportion of household expenditure.

It would still be interesting though. Look up what the wage is today for what you done then, and do a rough %.

I remember from the 90s, newspapers used to say how many hours of work to buy a loaf of bread etc. One could have some fun with those numbers you have. Because some things will have gone down in terms of time worked, some up.

Coke was so blooming cheap but yep I agree it wasn't as cheap as I was expecting. Could be the wholesome items of course.

The spinach I buy from Sainsburys is only £1 now.

67p then is £1.98 now. A lot of those prices look broadly similar to what we pay today. Things like carrots cost about 15p for a kilo bag at Christmas as all the supermarkets compete with each other over the price of "their" Christmas dinner.

really? I'm surprised by how little the price has gone up in a lot of cases given it was 35 years ago!

Even without allowing for inflation, a lot of things are actually cheaper now like the veg - nearly all the supermarkets were literally giving carrots, onions, parsnips away for free by christmas eve the last few years, and even before then they were 7p a bag. Stuff like sainsburies own bacon range is £1.25 now versus £1.75 then - perhaps the pack might have been a bit bigger, we don't know, but that's really scary given the increased costs in food production.

Things like sainsburies own porridge oats are only 6p more now.

Dairy products seem to have gone up but still, nowhere near as much as I'd have expected given the amount of time that has passed.

Surely the turkey came from Moens and your OH spent time in the queue drinking complimentary mulled wine with all the other husbands?

2kg of onions in £1.90 in Sainsbury’s now. 85p then would be £2.17 in today’s money so they’re actually cheaper now than they were then.

I particularly noted two things:

• the mix of lbs and kg
• the multi buy (£2 off 2 bottles) on champagne BUT you bought 3 bottles, not 4!

Brilliant! If I saved a receipt for 36 years I can virtually guarantee it would be faded/blank.
