Found my 1990 Sainsbury's Christmas grocery receipt in an old box

I can't find the old thread so apologies....but I have found another receipt (of mine, like the previous one ha ha)
This is the itemised grocery bill from Sainsbury's, Dec 22 1990 🫨 I paid by cheque ! It must have been our 'big shop' but there's no celebratory turkey so I assume that was ordered separately. Hope the pics don't take too long....
I have no idea why it ended up in my scrap box of tickets, memorabilia etc. If it was a particularly memorable Christmas eludes my memory now 🤷‍♀️

When I go shopping I add up what it would have been in mid 2000s prices and see how much I have been 'ripped off'. If I have lots of discounted items it is not too bad. Wierd habit I know 🤣

We get our butter from Farmfoods, it’s £1 a block - just a tip.

That aside, none of the prices are drastically different from today tbh. Bin liners are a similar price for example. Lager would probably be twice the price (though I don’t drink it so don’t know the going rate), it has been 36 years so you’d expect that.

So much stuff seems relatively in line with what we pay now for stuff, the veg items at least. We buy mainly ingredients rather than pre packaged or pre prepared stuff and although meat is expensive the veg/salad stuff is more than reasonable.
The coke back in 1990 though! Wow 😂 the pack of 10 razors also seems crazy but I pretty much buy a 10 pack of cheap razors once a year and it’s not more than a couple of quid.

One thing that stands out is that there's a single 'two for one' offer on that receipt.

Nowadays, your receipt is full of two-for-ones, buy two get one free, Nectar/Clubcard savings calculations at the bottom - it's totally normal when you pay to see one price on the screen, then a completely different price when you scan your loyalty card!

I still remember my main Christmas present from 1990. I was seventeen then and it was the No 7 Christmas Treasures gift set. It came in a treasure chest shaped box The plastic outsides of the lipsticks had little pictures of Christmas candles on them. And i think the eyeshadows had little indents of holly berries in them. Was lovely I still have the treasure chest box or rather DH does keeps nails and bits in it. DM bought me a No 7 gift every Christmas for years. This was the first one.

We used to do that. Our fridge door pocket was too small for bigger ones, and we had milk delivered in bottles at that time anyway. We would sometimes buy single pints from the supermarket as extras and freeze them.

@TheCoatThatLaunched1000Emails if I remember rightly it was pretty good, brut or extra dry ! There are things that are niggling me and I won't be able to resolve... the courgettes especially 🤔 I will ask my son but unlikely he will have any recollection apart from if he got what tech he wanted....

The most terrifying thing is that DH and I were engaged in 1990 and I was shopping for a couple. I also remember that champagne!

There’s things on there that aren’t much more expensive now (eg toothpaste). You can get it in home bargains for £1.

Very true although I wonder how much bigger the tube from 1990 was.
I went back and had another look at the list and there are so many things that appear to be fairly in line with prices now (obviously more expensive but appropriately so) but not much has weight/volume on it. One I did notice was mayonnaise, £1.07 for 400g back then, £2.80 now so more than double for the same amount. Still seems crazy cheap to me!
Shrinkflation is real but I don’t think we’ve ever paid enough money for real food tbh, especially meat and dairy.

I read it as she was trying to establish why she'd kept the receipt, not the purpose of the shop itself.

I was 17 in 1990 om 53 in a few weeks😥

My money is on a boxing day turkey curry.
