DD college lanyard woes (ADHD)

My DD is meant to wear a lanyard at college with her student pass in it - she needs it to get in/out of buildings, buy lunch etc. She has ADHD and lost/forgot it most days last year until she started keeping her pass in her phone case and all was well from then on.

Fast forward to yr13 and shes Head Girl and been told she has to physically wear the lanyard to lead by example. Day 3 and she’s lost it already and is distraught.

Anyone got any tried and tested tips or solutions to help?

Agree.

Except that this isn’t about showing that she’s Head Girl. The OP has explained that her daughter “needs it to get in/out of buildings, buy lunch etc.”

Put an air tag on it?

i wouldn’t be able to leave the house without one on my keys. Every morning i wonder around aimlessly calling out to the family - who has seen my keys? Not sure why I can’t manage to put them somewhere useful every night but it is beyond me.

Adding a Tile keyring to it might help? I am one of those that has had to be taught to be a 'putter' rather than a 'leaver' otherwise I have no idea where mine is for work! All my keys, purses and phone has Tile on it so I can track where they all are!

How will she cope in the real world?!

I work in the real world and refuse to wear lanyards as they are itchy. It has had zero impact on my career prospects. I wear the pass on a retractable pass holder thst clips on. This really shouldn't be an issue.

The retractable pass holders that pp have linked would be ideal. Many of our staff wear them instead of lanyards as they don't like them.

she’ll attach it to a belt hook or pin it to her blazer. As discussed by the posters offering practical help.

She’ll be fine.

I would also encourage her position of influence to speak to her school about how difficult a lanyard approach is for ND young people and it is NOT laziness but explain what the problems
are and see if they can come up with alternatives

I know why schools do this but would it work if she had one of those elastic things to pop on her waistband/ could she carry the card in the back of her phone - and really make it a positive change for all

moat schools just pick the easiest options and no understanding of how what appears to be simple things impacts ND individuals and see it as an attitude / compliance / you could if you had to type thing - so use it like a credit card rsteh than wearing the thing!

But OP didn’t say she lost her phone, in fact she said the opposite. When the pass was in the phone all was well.

And I'm telling you the reason she could find her pass when it was with her phone is because if you lose your phone in the house its easier to locate! So people saying why does she only lose her pass when it is not with her phone, it is because you don't have several means to relocate it, via bluetooth or ringtone, so it stays lost.

Viviennemary · 11/09/2026 09:59

The only way to stop her losing it is to find a way of fixing it to her person. Lots of duplicates is not the answer and in any case it's a security breach. Imagine if an MP did this with their security pass. Mad idea.

Thanks for suggestions! Shes not allowed any duplicates or copies for security reasons; we and the SENCO asked last year.

I know it should be as simple as just look after it but genuinely she has tried. We put in place so many strategies last year but nothing worked. It became so overwhelming she started avoiding college altogether rather than admit she’d lost her pass again. She also struggles with sensory aspect of it round her neck (which is why she removes it so often) but clearly she has to find a solution. She missed so much college in first term last year as a result of this and thought she’d found a solution (it was a new college and she didn’t know anyone so being locked out of everywhere added to stress and isolation). Shes done so well to come back from a difficult first term abd be elected head girl and now she’s convinced they’ll take her position away as shes “clearly useless” 😢

My 30 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with ADHD, waiting for medication to be prescribed.

I’ve lost count of how many keys, pass cards, credit cards that she’s lost. She’s very forgetful as well, all part of the condition. Strangely my daughter has never lost her phone 🤔

She’ll come to visit us then we turn the house upside down as she can’t find her car key, you couldn’t make it up. It’s very frustrating for all of us, it’s a horrible condition to have to live with, 🤷‍♀️

You can ‘tell me’ all you like. OP didn’t mention that the DD did as you do, so I’m not adding arms and legs to her post.

There have been some good alternatives to official lanyard posted, but it sounds to me like here it's important that she wears the official one. They do this at my son's sixth form, and are really hot on it as a security measure. Staff too.

Hopefully OP there are plenty of ideas on here to get a way to make the official lanyard work, if that's what they are asking of her. As my son says, sensory wise it's a drop in the ocean after 5 years in a blazer and tie and it's good to normalise it for interviews and work. It's easier in winter too with a hoody.

Wittering2020 · 11/09/2026 12:07

My son has ADHD and we have also had this issue. We found that looping it through his belt loop worked…. not sure if that would class as visible enough though. Could the school offer a badge as an alternative to the lanyard….?
