Our sofa has died. Where shall we buy a new one from?

Our sofa has died. Absolute pile of crap it was, I couldn’t be more delighted to be getting rid of the bastard. Only 8 years old and a leg has broken, and the upholstery has a massive rip in the seat.

So we need a new one. Hurrah! Any recommendations of where to buy a sofa these days?

Our last one was from Heals: we will not be going back there.

What’s your budget?
We bought new sofas from Ercol at the start of the year. They are amazing. Really comfy, really well made, I like the mid century style. 25 year guarantee. But they did cost about £2200. Money well spent IMO.

My DD spent a ridiculous amount on two new sofas and a coffee table from Loaf about 10 years ago and frankly the quality is shockingly poor for the price. One sofa has already been replaced. The cutesy names for their pieces, and mailing out a catalogue, don’t translate to good quality products.

Marks and Spencer, after nearly 14 years our sofas are still brand new.

Sofa Workshop closed down some years back. The original founders now have Sofas And Stuff, I think - also all British manufacture and good quality materials.

They are pretty expensive but we got a fantastic bargain on ex display sofas - definitely worth taking a look.

We had great sofas from M&S a long while back. Good IKEA sofas too.

SCS sofas were pieces of shit that fell apart in 6 months.

We ditched our Next sofa after the frame broke after about 5 years. It was marketed as a 3 seater but broke with only 2 people using it. The frame was made of particle board, not solid wood. The tweedy fabric also went bobbly.

I’ve had good experiences with the less expensive ones from dfs and sofology

We've got old Next ones that need replacing (16 years old though!) , the small newer Next one still looks great but we have to constantly push the seat cushions back on it properly - drives me crazy...

ikea! Bomb proof

IKEA. They’re indestructible.

Mine is from IKEA, precious to that was DFS and the quality was shocking compared to IKEA. My cushions are still very full and my covers can be removed and washed in the washing machine.

Ours is from the Country Living range at DFS. It’s 4 years old but still looks and feels like new. Everyone who sits on it comments on how comfortable it is.

I like Ikea. Comfy, not expensive and you can wash the covers - we are very hard on sofas!

Ercol do sofas British made, they have an outlet shop as well. Not sure if they are in budget or not.
my parents had my grandmothers 60 year old one recovered by them recently. Fantastic service and great quality.

DFS, they last really well

Ours are from Long Eaton Sofas. You do have to go there to pick everything, but I wouldn't buy a sofa without sitting on it.

ours is from Sofology, one of their cheaper ones and 8 year on I am still very pleased with it, it gets a lot of wear with five of us in the house.

agree with not Sofology, absolute nightmare, didn’t deliver after the agreed 13 weeks and said we had to wait another 17 after that!

I spent approx £600 on an IKEA one and it's fabulous

I’m surprised how much I love our dfs sofa - dh snores so sometimes I have to sleep on it and I don’t even mind because it’s so comfy.

Have Next sofas 12 years and still going strong

Not M & S. The covers on ours stretched beyond belief and the sofas looked knackered after just a few months. It’s just the two of us and no hard family wear and tear. They sent an inspector round who declared nothing wrong. Since then we’ve had to pay for an upholsterer to put them right. Will never be buying from them again which is a shame as my previous M & S sofas were great.

Ours is Dunelm! We went with it because it was a dupe of a Loaf sofa that I fell in love with but their prices were insane and I read several threads on here that put me right off!

It was less than a grand in a sale and is really comfy and still looks good 4 years in.

Someone up thread recommended Tetrad. Four years ago when we were looking for a sofa I came on here and asked, and bought a Tetrad through a local stockist based on a recommendation. I absolutely love it. It’s so well made and still looks like new.

Our living room sofas are 12 years old from Next and were cheap. They still look like new.
