Anyone seen the new trailer released yesterday? I’m so excited for Christmas, it looks amazing.

Thanks. I already have Prime, Virgin Media, Apple TV, and Netflix. According to both Prime and VM I need to pay another subscription on top of my subscription to access the new series.

I’m not that keen on spending even more money. I’d say this thread is probably not the one best suited for me! 🫣

Yeah, it’s expensive with all the subscriptions. HBO Max is £5.99 with ads & more if you don’t want ads. It was on Mumsnet that I found out that people cycle through different streaming platforms every couple of months. So that is what I am doing when HP starts.

Why don't you just subscribe to one service at a time? Binge Netflix for a couple of months, then cancel Netflix & subscribe to Prime, binge Prime for a couple of months, then cancel Prime & subscribe to HBO, binge HBO for a couple of months, and so on. That way you're only ever paying approx £7 a month in subscription costs.

Yes I plan to drop a subscription when I sign up for HBO

Yes the films really did Ron dirty! One scene that sticks out is the devils snare bit in philosophers stone which they completely changed to make Ron even more idiotic in the film. They also took multiple lines from him in the book and gave them to Hermione instead.

‘If you want to kill Harry you’ll have to kill us too’ while standing on a broken fucking leg!

film Ron has him snivelling in a corner.

I think the age thing was maybe due to Alan Rickman.

Snape should be early 30s when Harry starts hogwarts, but once you’ve cast Rickman who was 55, all his classmates (James, Lily, Sirius, Lupin) have to be the same age.

ETA - obviously James and Lily wouldn’t be early 30s because they’re dead, but you have to have them dying at about 10 yrs younger than the others are.

Petunia is also miles too old in the films to be Lily’s younger sister.

Edited

I think Petunia was the older sister? Which would make her 34 in the first book (23 when Lily died at 21?). Fiona Shaw was still too old, as was Richard Griffiths (I know Petunia wanted someone normal and stable, not sure that means someone 20 years older than her!).

Oh man! That sounds like a lot of admin… plus I have a partner and 4 teenagers living in my house. That sounds hard

Well it was a solution to you saying you didn't want to spend more money.

YourWatermelonship · 09/09/2026 20:56

A lot of the actors were too old in the films. Harry's parents looked middle aged, when they actually died at 20-21?? Snape, Lupin and Sirius were meant to be early 30s.

I am wondering how they will go about Voldemort? I didn't like Ralph Fiennes in the films. The only Voldemort I found believable and chillingly charismatic was Christian Coulson in the second film.

I am looking forward to a truly bad ass Snape and from what I have seen in the trailers this will deliver.

Also Hermione's dress for the Yule ball in Goblet of Fire better be periwinkle blue!

And Voldemort and Bellatrix better die like humans. Thats my most hated part of the books.

HenriettaHippopotamus · 09/09/2026 21:00

I’ve started to read the books for the first time so I might give the series a go when I finish. At least a series won’t have to cut things out to save time like a film.

I don’t understand the racism hate for the new Snape either.

The (albeit tiny) snippet of Snape we see in the trailer seems very promising imo.

If anyone is revisiting the books I highly recommend the audible full cast audiobooks

It’s not racism to want the character in a series to be like the character you’ve concocted in your mind from descriptions in a book!

we cycle through subscriptions too. We’ve got Apple TV at the moment for Ted Lasso, Silo and Slow Horses and will then cancel and move on to something else.

it’s really easy to cancel from your phone.

Maybe not but the same people have no problem with Alan Rickman playing Snape when he’s 20 years too old. There’s an obvious reason for that.

Is the argument against Snape being black not that changing the race change could make characters look racist? The three main characters will spend a lot of time suspecting a minority member of the teaching staff of being up to no good. Doesn’t Harry Potter’s father bully him?

Personally I’m not that bothered and plan to watch it, but I think there can be arguments against race swapping.

canklesmctacotits · 09/09/2026 21:41

I believe JKR has been very closely involved in this production, so I would assume it’s going to be closer to her vision than the movies. I’m looking forward to DS watching them and will prob sit through them. He’s read all the books multiple times, watched the movies multiple times and been to the HP studios. Eschews marvel and Star Wars and other franchises, only interested in HP - as a British mum of an American boy I consider this success on my part 😇

Yes, Harry’s father was a bully.

What is the issue with the three main characters believing a black teacher is up to no good? That the audience might think the kids are racist?

Snape being black doesn’t change the plot. His race is irrelevant.

Well, the marauders were bullying Snape.
Is it some how ok if Snape was white,.as it's far too shocking that he was black.

Sirius and James were nasty pieces of work... maybe Snape being black will highlight just how awful they were. Because right now, people are thinking of them as loveable rogues who were a bit stupid when they were young.... But actually they were utterly awful and bullied their peers...

Agreed. They don't think he's up to something because he's black...it's because Snape was horrible to them from the beginning, giving no reason to like him, and then they had "evidence",.biased because they did not like him (because Snape was awful to them and made it clear he didn't like Harry, and he favours Slytherins) , so in their mind, Snape had a bloody leg because he was trying to get past Fluffy (we know to catch Quirrel, but kids assume to find stone)
he was "cursing" Harry in the quidditch match kids assume for bad reasons.... They misunderstood his intentions because Snape treated them badly so had no reason to assume he was actually helping them

purungpurung · 09/09/2026 21:51

@wheelhouse1717 you seem determined to bring up racism hate for the casting of Snape.

So here’s my take on the casting. Snape is the quintessential northern (okay, possibly midlands) white working class boy. Casting a Black actor as Snape doesn’t make sense. Cast a Black actor as any other character and I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid.

My theory is that, rightly or wrongly, Alan Rickman is so entwined with Snape, the showrunners went looking for someone completely different. Also, it created online chatter and there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

I have felt bad for Paapa - he doesn’t deserve all the hate he has received. He’s a great actor. If at the end of the day, Snape in the series is portrayed like the Snape in the books, then fair play to HBO.

I think there were poor black boys living in the midlands in the 60s.

Mine too! I was sooo disappointed by the final battle ending! The whole entire point is that without the horcruxes, Voldemort was mortal. And was supposed to die a mere mortal. Not randomly explode and shatter into a million pieces. And it was meant to be in the great hall at sunrise. I think I had that image so perfectly in my head that I was outraged they went flying around outside and then he just exploded into nothing. Ridiculous!

agree that Hermione is perfect and seems a much better actress than Emma Watson. Can’t wait to see all the little details the films missed

Once you realise Emma Watson just raises her eyebrows a lot.... You can't see past it. Just like Daniel Radcliffe doesn't know what to do with his hands 😂
