How often do you find money - and do you keep it?

I was out walking today and musing about the money I've found over the years. On average I find about £15 per year ( this year so far it's about £7, still a few months to go).

I tend to keep anything under about £5, but for big amounts I hand it in to the police, who give it back to me after a month if it's unclaimed (which it always is). I once found £60, and last year I found £40 - both of which I got to keep.

Does anyone else find money often?

My Labrador found a five pound note under a hedge. This was during a break in his sniffer dog course!

I haven’t found anything in ages, but anything in notes I donate, coins I’d keep or split between the kids.

My DH finds coins quite often. My bank has a machine to count cash and recently it came to £50.

I find quite a bit during term-time, as I work for a college. I've only ever found one £20 note, but small change and fivers are much more frequent!

I’ve never found money that I can recall but I’ve often had money returned to me that I had lost, which for me is as good as finding money.

I went metal detecting once and found a beautiful 1881 Victorian penny. Barely worn, but green from being in the ground all those years. It's quite a rare year.

There was a fair held in that field every year in the late Victorian period. You wonder who lost the penny? Were they happy?

I found a £10 in a trolly a while ago. It was on a retail park which had a Cancer charity shop. I went in and donated it to the charity, as there was no way in knowing who would have lost it.

I once found a £20 on the showroom floor at my old job. It was the end of the day and only me and the boss left to close up. I asked him about it because I thought it might have been his and fell out of his pocket, it wasn’t. Thinking he would just leave it at that and tell me to keep it, he instead went into his wallet put the £20 in there and gave me a £10 back!

I have found various things in the past including a gold coin in the 80s whilst walking home. Kept it as no way of finding the owner. I had it valued in 2000s and it was worth about £200, probably more. I have found an m and s gift card with 150 on it which I handed to the staff, but they said keep it as no way of knowing who dropped it. Lots of 20 pound notes. The gift card I gave to someone who was really struggling.

I found a $50 note (AUD) on the pavement on my early morning walk a while ago. It was a new build estate, no residents yet, so I assume a tradie dropped it. I kept it as it was too much faff to find an owner or hand it in. Bought my kids a nice dinner!

I found £50 on a waltzer when I was a kid I chased the man to give it back and when I said “excuse me” he turned round and said “what the fuck do you want” so I kept it and bought myself a new CD player and a bunch of CDs in Woolworths lol

I found a leather wallet marked ‘pension book’ with no pension book, just plenty of twenty pound notes inside, in the bank once. I queued up and handed it a teller and she looked at me like I had beamed down from another planet.

I found a couple of hundred dollars on a footpath one day and it was windy, so they were starting to disperse! I gathered them up and looked around and there was an old fella working in his garden, so I asked if he’d lost any money, and he pulled out a money clip (an American thing I think) and it was empty, so it was his money. He barely said thank you ungrateful old buzzard!

Then my neighbor found a newish iPhone outside and asked if it belonged to one of my kids (it didn’t). So I used my sleuthing skills to track down the owner, and once again, ungrateful.

DH found $400 worth of gift cards outside a shop one Christmas Eve. He left his phone number and said if anyone came looking, to give them the number. It was a woman who’d bought them for her kids. When she came to get them, she gave DH a bottle of wine.

Otherwise I’ve found a dollar here and there, which I usually keep and either buy a lottery ticket or give to someone who needs it more than me.

Oh that made me laugh. My husbands wallet is always empty of cash. He is the last person I would look to for cash

when I was a teenager I found a brown envelope with a couple of hundred pounds and a pay slip. Managed to track the owner down. They were very relieved and surprised to get it back.

My dh and I on a holiday found an envelope with a wad of cash in one day in the market place, we asked around if anybody has lost the envelope then gave up and went to the local police station and handed it in..About 4-5 months later got a call from station saying we could claim it and for a few seconds I had no idea what they were talking about as I had forgotten the incident. Anyhow we were due to holiday same place in a matter of weeks and popped in and we were very surprised to find out there was £680 in that envelope so we donated half to a charity and had a bit extra special holiday that week..Found £10 several times but again hand it in because I know exactly how awful when your down to your last few quid for bread and milk to tide you over a couple of days and lose it. Our kids have found coins and we prefer to put those in charity boxes if small

when I was quite a young child I found £10 blowing down the street in town. I caught it and ran after an old lady in front of us. It was hers and she was so pleased when I gave it back to her she gave me £2. I spent it on sweets

I used to find money in the street much more often when I was younger. I suppose hardly anyone has cash any more. I once found £20 and I kept it. Found a fair few fivers and tenners in my 20s. If I found a wallet I would definitely hand it in, though.

I’ve found paper money on the floor in a supermarket, left in cash bit of self service tills, a purse on a bus etc. Always hand it in to the appropriate customer service/bus driver and post on local social media groups. It’s not mine and nothing to do with me. I hope they get back to the owner but I’d never think to just take it. DD has been with me several times when I’ve found cash so I taught her what to do. A random pound coin on the street is fair game, because you couldn’t even try to return it. Unless it’s glued down to take the mick 😂

All money that goes through the washing machine is mine. It"s a household understanding.

I worked in a very BUSY town centre and lots of random £20 notes gushed , I was late to the melie. It was underneath a railway station and plenty of buses every few seconds . So lots of wind activity. I joined the meile got £80 . This was about 13 years ago.
I worked in wetherspoon as a cleaner , found many purses and wallets handed them all in . Most I found was £120 in a purse , drivers license, bank cards etc. I handed it in . I always took pictures of purse / wallet , money found, etc, all put back intact and handed over so couldn't get accused of anything.

I did think about keeping the odd umbrella that had sat there for a month. Those large golf ones
