How often do you find money - and do you keep it?

I was out walking today and musing about the money I've found over the years. On average I find about £15 per year ( this year so far it's about £7, still a few months to go).

I tend to keep anything under about £5, but for big amounts I hand it in to the police, who give it back to me after a month if it's unclaimed (which it always is). I once found £60, and last year I found £40 - both of which I got to keep.

Does anyone else find money often?

My ds seems to be quite lucky at finding money. He found £10 on the street recently - there was no way of knowing who it belonged to so he kept it.

I would keep it tbh ever since I lost my purse with about £40 cash and cards inside. I went to the police station and someone had handed it in. The cards were all inside but someone had nicked every last penny of the cash. I've not found anything more than a fiver since.

I’ve only ever found one £10 and one £20 note. The £10 was with a load of discarded litter I’d collected, so I considered that a reward for clearing up. The £20 was in the middle of a busy street in a touristy city. I asked around if anyone had dropped any money, but nobody claimed it, so I donated it to charity.

If I ever found money dropped in a shop/supermarket/high street, I’d always hand it in somewhere or try to reunite it with whoever lost it. if nobody claimed it, I’d donate to a local good cause

DH once had a carpark machine dispense about a fiver like a slot machine after he bought his ticket, he kept it. I've never found anything, I'm not observant enough

Found 200 euros in cash in a drawer once. Dh was going abroad and spent some of it. Still have 75 left.
Found a tenner in the street once and the odd 20p

I don’t think I’ve ever found money when out and about - have spotted the odd coin on the floor outside before but not picked it up.
The only money I do find on a regular basis has come from clattering around the washing machine from dhs pockets - I have a money jar in the utility room for such a situation and when it gets full I take it to the coin machine in Tescos, change it all up into notes and treat myself 😂 he does know about this and agrees it’s a fair taxation system! Everyone knows about the petty cash jar and can take change if they need it but it’s solely funded by dh.

If there’s a chance of finding the owner, I’ll hand it in. But out in the street or a field, I keep it. 50p is the lowest coin I bother to pick up. I found a 20 last month so I bet ten on the football, losing it in the process, and spent the other ten on two pints as I watched the match.

I remember years ago when I lived in a flat where the entrance was in a car park, used for the shops..
I found a £5 on the ground, then like 3 or 4 days later I found another £5 on the ground, was thinking hope this carries on.. but it didn't

I found £10 in the street when I was a teenager back in the 80’s it was a significant amount then - I kept it as I felt that there was no way that I’d be able to find the owner.

I moved back into the area I lived in as a child in 2019, I was showing DD all my own haunts, including a concrete flower bed in the street where I now live. I bashed my head badly on this when I was about 7, causing concussion and I needed stitches.

On a walk with DD I found £4 in this flower bed. I just kept it as no way of knowing who it belonged to. I joked with DD that it was compensation for the wound I suffered in the mid 70’s!

I tend to be out walking pretty early when the streets are empty, so I've never seen anyone around that might have dropped it. I once found £10 near a shop and it was too early for the shop to be open and I wondered if it was from one of the kids who deliver their newspapers, but there were none visible and the shop was famous for fleecing people at any opportunity so I didn't fancy my chances of handing it in to them to pass on the the rightful owner

I once found 400 quid in a wallet up the road from where I live, rushing home in the rain.

Tried to give it to a policeman who said no thanks, could I walk three miles in the now-pouring rain to hand it in at the police station.

Went home, tracked the woman owner down via linkedin, and she acted as if I was one of the Brinks Mat burglars.

Finally made it out (still torrential rain) to give it back to her and she exclaimed, oh you didn’t steal the cash!

I found £200 and in a red phone box and tracked down the owner who was really nasty to me and insisted on carefully counting it whilst filming himself. In a bizarre coincidence he walked into my business about 12 months later and oddly I couldn’t fit him any time that month.

I found a fiver on the pavement once, put it straight in my pocket as there was no one about.

I found £20 in Tesco last week by the baking ingredients . I handed it straight in to customer services. It’s a lot of money to some who have nothing. Also it wouldn’t feel right to keep it. What happens to the money if no one claims it though I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ they didn’t ask me for my details. I would hope they give it to charity.

I found 2 £10 notes while out for a run last year, I picked it up as another runner had just run past in the opposite direction so I called out to see if it was his, he said it wasn't and I was left standing there with it in my hand not knowing what to do with it. I kept an eye on local FB pages to see if anyone had lost any then donated it to charity.

Once found the equivalent of £20 in the sea on holiday in France, 40 years ago when that was a lot of money, it bought 4 of us super dooper ice cream sundaes the size of our heads with some left over.

Someone dropped a few £5 notes at Edinburgh Castle a couple of years ago. I was against a massive crowd and somehow managed to pick £30 up. I turned around in the hope of working out who is was who'd dropped them, but so many people around I just couldn't see anyone obvious. I tried to queue for a member of staff to hand over, but queue was long and the people I was with didn't want to wait, so I kept. Last year I saw £20 flying through the sky, it just hadn't to land close to where I was crossing the road. Have to admit again I kept it, as there was no one else walking nearby to even ask. I feel a bit guility as part of me thinks I should have given it to charity.

Other than that I find the odd coin around, and I figure I must drop them myself, so that's equal if I keep them.

Never more than a £1 coin and yes, I keep it in unless I've just seen someone drop it in which case I point it out to them.

I've been offered too much change in shops before, e.g. tenner not fiver, and I always point that out (I know what it's like when a till doesn't balance).

When I had a knee injury I found alot of coins because I'd watch the ground as I walked.

At primary school, a fence blew over. Sitting on the top was a large note, equivalent of about £100 nowadays. I diligently handed it to a teacher and never saw it again!

I have found money before and always kept it. The odd fiver and tenner. A couple of months ago I found a £10 note when walking across the road, no one around as I did look to see if there was anyone who could have dropped it. I did keep it. It wouldn’t occur to me to take it to the police station, I’m not even sure where my nearest one is!
now if I found a purse or a wallet that would be different and I’d do everything I could to return it to the owner, but I’d probably use social media to try and find them to return it.

Years ago I found a big roll of cash on the floor of my local. All twenties, lots of them. I asked the men at the bar if anyone had lost any money and the local builder went white! It was his labourers wages! He did loads of odd jobs for me over the years and I always got a little discount for being honest!

Man in front of me at a cash machine years ago, (assume just in a rush) ran away without taking his money!

I found a handbag with £200 in it ..an old lady had lost it so gave it back

I never understand this (and the similar stories people have written here).
If someone went to the trouble of returning money (or anything else) I'd lost, I'd be beside myself with gratitude!

I found a phone at the top of my road recently. DH took it upon himself to hunt down the owner (based soleton the photo of the kids on the screen lock). He did succeed - but the person just said, yes it's mine - and snatched it from his hand!! I mean - wtf? How about thanking him?
