So dark, so depressing, so awful, no socialising, unbearable etc.

What do you think?

OP posts:
PinkNailPolish2026 · 31/08/2026 16:43

I despise winter, short days, lack of natural sunlight and the darkness closing in at 3.30/4pm is depressing. I do socialise but hate driving in the dark because of those blinding headlights most cars have now. I get absolutely no joy from twinkly lights or being under a blanket either, I’m already counting down the days until the winter solstice, at least then I know lighter days are coming.

ShitFacedShakespeare · 31/08/2026 16:44

Why would you stop socialising?

No wonder you find it depressing.

Backfrombright · 31/08/2026 17:04

Whereabouts are you??

I agree. I think we do more socialising in autumn/winter than spring/summer. It's the time to invite friends round for meals/drinks etc imo

Nightnova · 31/08/2026 17:11

The dark evenings depress me. You can keep your twee cosy evenings under blankets with 'hot choc' I'd rather sit in a sunny garden with a glass of wine.

Nofeckingway · 31/08/2026 17:12

I hate it. Getting up in the dark and the cold . And because of cloud cover it always seems to be gray . Dark again by 5pm. Wish I could go to Australia for the winter.

Hycosaneyedrops · 31/08/2026 17:15

Nope, I’m so excited. Can’t wait to leave for work when it’s dark, go on break and finish work when it’s dark, take the kids to school in the freezing cold and rain.
Im looking forward to it being 6°c in my house in the morning.
I enjoy when it’s cold enough that it hurts to the bone.

My only worry is that my boiler will freeze again this year like it did last year.

Backfrombright · 31/08/2026 17:18

You literally posted this the other day Things I do like about autumn and winter = literally everything else. I love wearing winter clothes, boots, extra socks, jumpers, tucking your bottom layer in, candles, closing your curtains early, hot drinks, seeing your breath outside for the first time, scarves, the list goes on and on.

Vicliz24 · 31/08/2026 17:18

Hate it with a massive passion. Dark , cold unbelievably grey and dank . Dark clothes no colour anywhere. I live for the Winter Solstice so we can turn back to the light .

Ok, this is confusing OP 😳

Getalittle · 31/08/2026 17:24

I’m very much looking forward to dark evenings, candles, my fireplace, blankets, rain, hot chocolate, soup, warming stews. Trips to cinema when weather is crap.

love it all!!

BorgQueen · 31/08/2026 17:26

I’m looking forward to the darker mornings only because I will be able to see headlights when pulling out onto the main road and therefore not risk death in doing so blind ( it’s on a curve where cars regularly come round at speed fully on the wrong side of the road because of all the parked cars.

Specialneedsnightmare · 31/08/2026 17:28

Yep I hate it too.

What is this obsession with candles and sweet, calorific hot drinks?

I prefer natural (bright) daylight and tea (and other drinks as well).

I just don't get it.

Stir fries over stews
Ambient warmth over blankets
Light evenings over dark evenings

The only thing you need to “get” @RampantIvy is…..

wait for it….

people are different

paomara · 31/08/2026 17:38

I'm getting older now, and honestly time flies so quickly that I've barely time to realise it is hot and sunny before it's cold and damp, and the cycle starts all over again! Within a blink of an eye it will be Solstice, then Christmas, then snowdrops, and brighter nights. The journey to Spring is a challenge for many but there's no way around it is there? Unless you can feck off to the Southern Hemisphere for six months!

I think to myself that while I dislike cold rain and darkness, I'm fine, am alive and well, and this too will pass. Then I'll be wondering how to cool down, and rue the day I didn't buy an air conditioner - again!

Myblueclematis · 31/08/2026 17:39

I'm not a big fan of the winter months, I really loathe the greyness of the sky which makes the house seem so dark and the day so short. The only upside is making and eating lots of stews and casseroles.

I'm not that much into candles, hot choccy and snuggly blankets.

SirChenjins · 31/08/2026 17:44

Yep - hate it. The thought of lying about on a sofa under a blanket for months on end, crap weather, drinking sickly sweet hot chocolate, eating stodgy food, suffocating under layers of clothes, scraping ice of the car and having to wear YakTrax simply to walk from A to B holds absolutely no attraction for me whatsoever. My mental health takes a real nosedive in these dark, miserable months. Roll on Spring and the long hours of daylight!!

What's the truth OP? You've gone from one extreme to the other and now you're moaning about the dark nights, so depressing, dank, no socialising. Make your mind up as opposed to making stuff up.
FWIW, I hated the summer, I have a medical condition which makes me heat vulnerable, so love the cooler weather as I run constantly warmer than a lot of people. i.e 28 degrees feels nearer 31.

xGoGox · 31/08/2026 17:47

I’ve really suffered from the heat this year. Didn’t enjoy it one bit. For this reason I’m actually looking forward to colder weather. I don’t find the cold difficult to deal with. I literally wear jeans, socks, a t-shirt and a sweater and feel very warm wherever I go. The car is warm, our house is warm, particularly all of the upstairs. Downstairs there’s a warm kitchen and a furry dog. I am NOT into hot chocs under blanket type stuff. I also find exercise really helps with not feeling cold day-to-day.

it sounds like you might have SAD. Any chance of a holiday somewhere sunny to break up the season?

Backfrombright · 31/08/2026 17:49

Op… this is weird…

I absolutely know that not everyone can afford do this. But I hate winter so very much, every single stinking thing about it that I've talked DH into a holiday in early Feb to Mauritius. We get so miserable and snappy with each other that I've sold it as the thing that will save our marriage! It's expensive but worth every penny.

sanityisamyth · 31/08/2026 17:56

Reporting for duty. I hate everything associated with autumn and winter.
