So dark, so depressing, so awful, no socialising, unbearable etc.

What do you think?

The dark evenings depress me. You can keep your twee cosy evenings under blankets with 'hot choc' I'd rather sit in a sunny garden with a glass of wine.

Likewise here. 😩

Yep - hate it. The thought of lying about on a sofa under a blanket for months on end, crap weather, drinking sickly sweet hot chocolate, eating stodgy food, suffocating under layers of clothes, scraping ice of the car and having to wear YakTrax simply to walk from A to B holds absolutely no attraction for me whatsoever. My mental health takes a real nosedive in these dark, miserable months. Roll on Spring and the long hours of daylight!!

Have you considered one winter not doing this and seeing the impact on your mental health @SirChenjins ?

AnneBoleyn123 · 31/08/2026 18:03

I dread it and loathe it. I really hate Winter.

Hornbeams · 31/08/2026 18:04

I don’t like it particularly as my working environment is dark and a bit gloomy.

we put plug in outdoor fairy lights on all around the back garden and the front garden and lights everywhere.

Honestly after 40 degree heat wave though I’m prepared not to moan this year

What is this obsession with candles and sweet, calorific hot drinks?

I prefer natural (bright) daylight and tea (and other drinks as well).

I just don't get it.

Stir fries over stews
Ambient warmth over blankets
Light evenings over dark evenings

What’s wrong with sweetness, calories and candles ?

It’s something about being cosy, I think. I love nothing better than being out in the rain, coming in, changing, maybe a hot shower, into soft warm clothes . Mmmmmm.

SteadyOnThereFella · 31/08/2026 18:47

Dreading the dark evenings and mornings. Wondering how soon I'll have to dust off my sunrise alarm clock and SAD lamp. I do lots of outdoor activities throughout winter but I still hate it.

I absolutely know that not everyone can afford do this. But I hate winter so very much, every single stinking thing about it that I've talked DH into a holiday in early Feb to Mauritius. We get so miserable and snappy with each other that I've sold it as the thing that will save our marriage! It's expensive but worth every penny.

We do a winter holiday too. We’re off to Thailand for some sun.

TheLambtonWorm · 31/08/2026 19:11

I used to be a chronic summer hater but it's been slightly cooler here later and I'm already feeling it in my ankles. I'm only 39 😂 but yeah wet weather can fuck off.

Smallestshadow · 31/08/2026 19:13

Yep- hate it! Nothing good about rain, cold, dark & wind.

I don't do these things - apart from the things I have to like scraping the car and using YakTrax when walking the dog obviously. Because hot chocolate and lying prone under a blanket is not appealing I don't do it - the things that other people on here love about winter are the things I hate.

Ok so what do you do over winter?

Why do you want to know?

Backfrombright · 31/08/2026 20:23

SirChenjins · 31/08/2026 20:21

Why do you want to know?

Because you say you despise winter
and yet you don’t do any of the things you list about why you hate winter

so asking you what you do during winter that makes you hate it so seemed a natural question

No, I list them because these are the things that always get trotted out here as wonderful things about winter. Winter is not something I enjoy - which is why I posted on a thread about dreading winter. If you love candles and hot chocolate and winter generally then I presume you're not dreading it.

There’s a bit more to winter than that for some of us 😆

I love all seasons tbh, they all offer things I enjoy

LondonLass2026 · 31/08/2026 20:28

For the last four months I've been able to go for a nice long run from 9pm - 10pm, and it was still light when I got home.

Now it's 8.20pm and getting dark.

There is something to be said for cosy Christmas lights and all, but even that's depressing come 26th December and it's all suddenly over.

I also no longer enjoy New Year's Eve because my father in law died very suddenly on 2nd January a couple of years ago.

It's also hard to walk the dogs in the dark as we live fairly rurally, and I don't like taking them out in the pitch black where there are no street lights. Loved being able to take them out at 9pm and it's all bright and sunny.

Can't stand the bats swooping at me though, and I won't miss that over winter! (and no I'm nothing to with that poster with a bat fetish, who's on here at the moment 😂)

@Backfrombright So you're not dreading winter - but you're on a thread started by someone asking who else is dreading winter, and then questioning posters who say they are also feeling that way.

I don't think this is the thread for you.

How peculiar. I asked what you hated about winter. You don’t seem in the best of moods in summer so I think I’ll back away from engaging further!
