@Jaichangecentfoisdenom I don't think that many people believe that America can go back to being 'the good guys' any time soon, (or even ever again). Trump has broken that connection and so the US has to start from scratch. Given that we are seeing a change in world order, the almost abandonment of foreign aid, and Iran demonstrating the effectiveness of asymmetric warfare, economic and military dominance is not enough to be the 'castle on the hill'.

If a previous president had said what Trump said about Ireland, the world would take notice. However he is now treated like an elderly relative with dementia - you have to pay attention to what they do, and be aware that their behaviour is unpredictable and could be dangerous, but you can't assume they know what they are saying.

Any other president and there would be an assumption that this was a deliberate statement about American foreign policy. I don't think this will lead to any more than eye rolling.

Under the Good Friday Agreement, Northern Ireland is part of the EU. All those born in Northern Ireland can get an EU passport.

Under the GFA, Northern Ireland can trigger a referendum on leaving the UK.

Following from my post last night, I will admit that in the years that followed, With the Iraq and Afghan conflicts consuming my youth, sending back traumatised peers and the constant spectre of terror, I didn’t have the capacity to dig deeper into it. It’s been the last few years when I’ve gone back and watched the documentaries and looked back at the pictures/footage, it’s been a totally different level of horror as I now know what I’m actually looking at. For those who lived through it on the ground, I have no words, only love and the utmost respect for you all.

And then you have the cowardly fuckwit in chief, who has never seen a conflict zone in his life, sleeping through it, wholesale missing the fucking point and then today talking about wanting to see a “united Ireland” FFS. Someone who clearly doesn’t understand the politics and the Good Friday Agreement and the shit both sides went through. How no one has screamed “just shut the fuck up” is beyond me.

TL:DR. I’m so sorry that decent Americans are still having to put up with this shit.

No there has to be a consensus with Ireland and Northern Ireland to have a referendum and the referendum has to be in both countries simultaneously.

Although Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU, surely they were bound by the overall decision of the entire United Kingdom, ie to leave. Ever since then, politicians have been trying to square the circle of NI no longer being in the EU, yet sharing a border and Trade with the Republic of Ireland

The NI vote to Remain meant nothing. Had 100% of us voted Remain the UK still would have left the EU. We may be entitled to EU passports, but we've suffered because the UK left the EU.

Farmers lost money. Our fisheries were destroyed. The third sector went. Factories moved a few miles south. Or West. We lost many professionals who had come from other EU countries and made a life here.

The upcoming question for NI is: Is it better for us to leave the UK?

It's Ireland Northern Ireland shares a border with. Anyone living in Ireland and travelling within the island doesn't have border checks. Healthcare, electricity and trade is not restricted on the island.

The trade restrictions for Northern Ireland are directly to mainland UK and not to Ireland. Certainly those businesses in Northern Ireland don't have the restrictions to export directly to the EU.
