Can’t really answer unless you give us even a tiny bit of detail about your present life

rubyslippers · 29/08/2026 19:47

Put yourself first
say no to things
be unapolagetic
embrace being older and wiser and knowing what you want
Volunteer
take the big job
go on a solo holiday
make sure your pension pot is being filled

concertinacornflake · 29/08/2026 19:48

I would say you really don't need a massive life plan!

Work out how to gradually move in a positive direction. What's good in your life now? Keep or increase that bit by bit. What's bad in your life now? Remove or reduce that bit by bit. And is anything missing? Try to add that bit by bit.

A lot of that sounds like encouraging someone to be a twat

be unapologetic? What if you do something that warrants an apology?

Put yourself first? Really? Always? Even if you have children?

JacknDiane · 29/08/2026 19:59

Just be yourself op.
Life is just life, its not a fb reel.
Just be yourself.

Captainladder · 29/08/2026 19:59

So am I. I always feel like September is my version of "new year".... so this year I've decided that I'm focusing only on strength. My mother is struggling with mobility and grip strength and I want to be mobile and strong. I bought myself a steel mace to work with for strength - it's really fun to use and it also helps with roataional mobility and strength.
what's important for you as you age?

RosieLeaLovesTea · 29/08/2026 20:07

we moved to a new area for a better life in 2022. I have 2DCs currently aged 12 and 10. have gone for the bigger job already in 2024. Been in it 2 years. I also completed a masters degree in 2024.

so I will be working towards my DCs beings young adults in my mid 50s.

i had a lot of significant deaths in the family over the last 4 years. I think I need to prioritise my health and fitness and also travel.

Health and fitness is a great start.

How’s your drinking?

RosieLeaLovesTea · 29/08/2026 20:10

@Gurgletummy drinking too much. Need to cut down.

One of the best pieces of advice I got when I turned 50 was to start strength training.

If you can, join a gym & have some sessions with a personal trainer to get a workout plan. People will tell you to just ask AI, but don’t - it’s much better done in person, so the trainer can show you how to do it all properly.

Ok so make this at the front and centre. Address this first as a property and then look at the other things you can do.

Are you drinking now? If so… pour it away

Sorry for your losses. Are these losses driving the feeling of needing a plan?

You've got a big job. Done a masters recently. Will have young adults to keep an eye out for. Add in some exercise and travel - there is no more to plan?

Interesting perspective that you think that’s twatty behaviour
many women will have spent twenty years plus putting everyone else first
when women get to this point their kids are often older an they can finally regain time and invest in themselves

being unapologetic doesn’t mean being an arse

You have said be unapologetic. What if you do something that warrants an apology

and no way do I even want to always put myself first. I do loads of stuff for my teens that I do for them, not for me ie them the priority .

Rachelshair · 29/08/2026 20:16

Why do you need a plan, are you wanting a change? There's not much difference between being 48 and a half and 50 is there..

Your list did sound a bit soulless. Also the things known to increase happiness are missing - community, creativity, comfort.

Then that’s you!
I do loads for my family every single day
but now it’s time for to pour into me a bit
there’s nothing wrong with that at all

im not sure why you’re getting hung up on being unapologetic

but I wish the OP luck
50’s are great for rediscovering who you are

Gurgletummy · 29/08/2026 20:19

I’m 45
Confident, happy, independent

if I do something wrong… hands up, I’ll apologise

and putting myself first teens first and occasionally friends / family - well that often brings me joy

So if you do something wrong - you wouldn’t apologise?

and making time for yourself? Hell yes! But does that mean putting yourself always first?

I was coming to say just this. Other positive changes seem to follow on after that.

Of course I’d apologise if I’ve caused harm but not apologising for having my own opinions, ambitions etc
as for putting others first I do that daily but also important to not do that to the detriment of yourself especially when kids are older

im not literally suggesting the OP sets fire to her old life

So don’t apologise for stuff you’re not sorry for? Sounds reasonable but not what you said

I don't think anyone needs to encourage you to be a twat 😂
