Hotel buffet breakfast, what's your selection?

I love a great buffet breakfast. Due on holiday in a few weeks and this is a part I am looking forward to! I tend to skip lunch so a lush breakfast is a real treat.
Just mulling over what I might have...maybe a small plate of savoury bits like ham, cheese, tomatoes, olives, and a slice of toast and butter. Then a bowl of fresh fruit, or a crepe with honey and fruit. A mini pastry or two. A mini cafetiere of coffee (my hotel does coffee by the cafetiere, yay).
Also love trying the local breakfast specialities such as those flaky honey crepes you get at breakfast in Morocco.
What's your choices?

I started at a fab hotel recently with tapas style breakfast, I had berry smoothy bowl followed by whipped feta and poached egg with multi grain toasted flatbread.

Ordinarily I'd have all the cooked stuff or/and croissant with Nutella.

I won’t usually don’t have tea I’d abroad as it’s not the same and the milk tastes odd. I like to have juices, either orange or cranberry. Normally the first day I like fry up, then next day, I go for pastry, cereals or fruit and yogurt. That’s the only time I have a fry up, eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns, mushrooms, tomatoes. It’s nice not having to cook.

Cetera · 24/08/2026 17:59

Currently away on holiday. This week I’ve mainly had scrambled egg & toast, or Spanish tortilla and jamon, plus a croissant or pain au chocolat. Orange juice and then a coffee to finish. I barely eat breakfast at home, can’t be arsed to make it. Love a buffet. Missing an omelette station but it’s a small hotel.

Forgetting my dodgy digestion I would start w fruit and yoghurt/nuts etc (whatever goes on it). And order a nice coffee. Then have egg, cheese, some salad bits, w some lovely bread and a pastry w jam.
if there’s hash browns I’ll go for that.
I love a posh hotel breakfast!

This is what I always have:
Mimosa (if available, otherwise plain OJ)
Lactose-free latte and a pot of coffee with a jug of warm lactose-free milk alongside
Bowl of fruit salad with greek yoghurt, nuts, seeds and honey
Eggs benedict if available. If not, two poached eggs on toast with avocado and bacon or smoked salmon alongside
Then maybe a bit more fruit and maybe a mini pain au raisin

This, minus the drink/juice.

Unless I'm in Asia, I'm which case I'll eat local food. Curry and a dosa or roti, dumplings, nasi goreng etc. Warm spicy things for breakfast are the absolute best!

Well I am not a breakfast fan, but currently have breakfast included in my present stay. This morning was the first breakfast. It was advertised as continental, anything cooked or eggy is extra. The selection was pretty good and attractively displayed.
I had coffee with hot milk, a ginger shot, which was very good and I am looking forward to another one tomorrow in a slightly larger glass. I chose 2 interesting cheeses, some celery, cucumber and 2 tiny tomatoes with a bit of smoked trout (have had better) and horseradish cream. There was also hummus on offer, might try that tomorrow. I passed on bread as it looked a little well done. There were also various cold meats as well as smoked salmon and gravad lax, croissants etc. etc.
Sadly no sparkling wine, but juices. Will see what tomorrow holds.
At home I have a large mug of bean to cup coffee with hot milk and a teaspoon of Manuka honey. That does me until lunch.
Agree with PP about Asian breakfasts. When I am in Sri Lanka an egg hopper is a must and a real treat, so happy to break my no breakfast rule for that.

LoafofSellotape · 24/08/2026 18:23

I was at a hotel yesterday and I had Greek yoghurt and blackberry compote, bacon, scrambled eggs, tomatoes and tons of mushrooms and toast and marmalade. Decaf tea. Yum!

TheOtterly · 24/08/2026 18:26

I adore a buffet breakfast! Only abroad though, UK hotels never have nice bread.
Bowl of grains, seeds and nuts
Bowl of fruit
Two or three types of crusty bread, butter and honey.

mamaduckbone · 24/08/2026 18:26

fresh fruit, granola and yoghurt followed by something savoury - maybe scrambled eggs and mushrooms or poached eggs and avocado, topped off with a couple of pastries. The mini pastel de nata on holiday this year were yum.
Lots of coffee, and some orange juice.

GellerYeller · 24/08/2026 18:30

Coffee with dairy free milk.
Grapefruit juice.
Either pancakes with fruit and syrup or:
1 rasher of bacon, 1 sausage, with a hash brown or fried bread, plus a poached egg.
Wholemeal or granary toast with proper butter and every sweet spread option: jam, honey, marmalade. Because that’s dessert! If not available, a mini croissant with butter and jam or a mini pain au raisin.
I don’t eat breakfast at home so hotel breakfasts are a rare treat and I won’t need lunch after all that.

SendTheNextOneIn · 24/08/2026 18:30

We’ve been away this week and my breakfast has been scrambled egg, grilled tomatoes, 2 slices of bread and butter. A bowl of fresh fruit and two or three pancakes (either American style or crepes, it’s varied each day) with Nutella. Two coffees and a large orange juice.

dreamingofgoodhair · 24/08/2026 18:32

Bircher muesli.
Omelette (vegetable)cooked to order.
Some bacon ( foreign crispy)
Orange juice
Coffee (milky)

I would basically work my way through the menu, varying my choices each day.

Same here. Love a hotel buffet breakfast.

Ooh I had forgotten about Bircher muesli. It’s not good for my sugar levels, but I love it if it’s made correctly.

1stWorldProblems · 24/08/2026 18:52

In order of preference

  • If available - a kipper with brown bread & butter. (Never cook kippers at home as the smell lingers for days.)
  • Scrambled Eggs (if proper) & smoked salmon & toast.
  • Waffles (or pancakes) with bacon & (real) maple syrup. Was sad to find this summer that bacon had vanished from US breakfast buffets this summer.
  • Fry Up
  • Croissant with butter & apricot jam or pain au chocolat.

Filter coffee with milk. OJ & cranberry juices mixed. Bucks Fizz (if available).

Only have it on holiday for some reason.

Just back from Cyprus, I'm not a big breakfast person normally but obvs when on holiday...I had peaches and melon with yogurt every morning, followed by various pastries. Very sweet tooth here and the bacon was fatty so I didn't bother with the hot food, and didn't fancy the cheeses etc first thing.

I would basically work my way through the menu, varying my choices each day.

This is the only acceptable way to do it in my opinion!

What's your choices?

Great thread, breakfast is my favourite meal. Morocco is a great place to go for any breakfast lover. I also like those sweet, flakey breads you're talking about. I don't eat sweets in the morning, but this one is an exception.

But yeah, I never really go for sweet things like pastries, pancakes, waffles, croissants and cakes in breakfast buffets. I'm also not a cereal person AT ALL. I never ever eat cornflakes, oats, porridge, granola, muesli, etc. Most pointless breakfast items in my world, because they don't fill me up one bit. I get hungry again after an hour.

Additionally, I don't do:

  • Cold cuts, smoked fish (only at home because I take the fish out cold from the fish. No idea how long it sits in a buffet), bacon or sausages. Meat in general, I'd say
  • Canned fruits and preserves
  • Yogurts, yogurt pots or parfaits
  • Fried foods
  • Saucy dishes like shakshuka, baked beans, ratatouille, etc.

For drinks, I go for fruit juices (I'm not picky, I like orange, apple, pineapple, mango, pomegranate...whatever's on offer), cold water and maybe a cappuccino. But mostly just juice and water.

I love a good omelette bar - I usually go for a simple vegetable omelette (mushroom, onions, tomatoes, cheese). I really like eggs for proteins in the morning. I also do soft boiled eggs or scrambled eggs. Fried eggs are okay, but not what I'd choose over the other types of eggs.

I also like seeded breads, butter, white and soft cheeses like feta, brie, camembert. And some vegetables on the side like cherry tomates, olives, peppers, cucumbers.

Carb wise, I really like roasted potato bites aside from seeded breads - and, for some reason, I love noodles. Not all places have noodles in their breakfast buffet, obviously, but when it's an option, I choose it.

I always end my breakfast with a plate of fresh fruits and berries.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/08/2026 20:04

What I have at home:

Yoghurt, berries, nuts, bran; or
Poached eggs on toast;
If smoked haddock and poached eghs are available, yes.

Good coffee.

If I had more, I'd come home the size of a house.

I had what was I think my most favourite hotel breakfast ever in Marrakech. Those flaky pastries with honey, little plates of amazing olives and fresh white cheese, boiled eggs, pot of steaming hot coffee, and the MOST divine oranges and orange juice. I've never tasted oranges like them before or since

My only gripe about hotel breakfasts is that I wish they did them later, I'm really a late breakfast-drifting into brunch person
