very grateful for recommendations for gripping, distracting podcasts that will get me through five hours.

What sort of thing do you like? I found 'Ghost Story' to be something that kept me engaged.

Bringemout · 23/07/2026 10:16

“Flesh and code” about people who have relationships with AI, it was fascinating but sensitively dealt with.

Sweet Bobby if you haven’t already heard it.

I've just started listening to 'The Dream', all about MLMs in the US. It's fascinating so far

You can free audiobooks on BorrowBox with a library number, may depend where you live. I recently listened to two by Alice Feeney which were very gripping and absolutely insane but in a good way. They’re about 8 hours each.

Your Own Backyard. It’s a guy documenting his looking in to a girl that went missing from his hometown and what he uncovers leads to a trial and conviction!

oustedbymymate · 23/07/2026 10:47

Passenger list - about a missing flight drama style
titanic ship of dreams - not totally gripping but well told
the Lazarus heist
Toxic waste scandal

oustedbymymate · 23/07/2026 10:48

I use Podcast Addict but it will be available pretty much anywhere you get your podcasts - Spotify etc

Cannedlaughter · 23/07/2026 12:43

Have you listened to ‘The gift’ it’s true stories of what has happened after someone took a DNA test to research ancestors. That’s a really good listen.
its a radio4 production

I binged loads of episodes of Casefile True Crime episodes recently on a long drive and thoroughly enjoyed it.

PancakeClock · 23/07/2026 13:26

If you’re open to something scripted rather than the conversational style, I really like the Short History of… series by Noiser. They are about an hour long per episode, some are multiple parts but not all. There are loads of varied subjects to browse through and I reckon most people could find five episodes that interest them in the back catalogue.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 23/07/2026 14:14

Root of evil is brilliant
also sweet Bobby

“Stranger on a bench” - these are lovely, although some heart-wrenching. Tom Rosenthal (singer-songwriter, not the comic/actor ) chats to people he meets and asks about their lives. He really draws people out of themselves, and asks questions with care and compassion.

Most of it is behind a paywall but it is a very interesting podcast

Member984815 · 23/07/2026 16:06

Another good one is the lady vanishes

Rubbercrumb · 23/07/2026 16:07

To catch a Scorpion - absolutely gripping and brave journalism about people smuggling

Kepler22B · 23/07/2026 16:08

Sherlock & co. Lasts a lot longer than 5 hours.
