How much did you spend on your wedding? Was it big or small? What decade was it? What sort of a day did you have, and did you have a nice time? Did you have a honeymoon, and was this part of the budget?

I am not even engaged, just nosy.

80s.
Wasn't wildly expensive, we had it in a hall with outside caterers and a local pub did the bar, a few hundred all in. Mum and I made the dresses for me and my bridesmaid. So about 70 quid.We had one car. Mate of my bil was the dj, think he took payment in pints. He was hysterical and had everyone up dancing straight off. Family friend did the photos after we got let down.It was a brilliant day, not terribly stressful, everyone still talks about it fondly.

We got married a couple of years ago after being together 30 years. No special clothes, 2 adult DC were witnesses. Just cost the registrar fees and a really great meal for us 4. Next day we all went on holiday to Iceland for a week and loved it. We told family about a year after we got married. Loved the day, no rushing, just us and no “you have to invite aunty Mabel” interference!

Absolutely dream day. Beautiful perfect venue, 80 guests for formal 3 course sit down meal, canapés, open bar, the works. Beautiful dress (though actually got that in the sales). Magician, videographer, photographer, flowers, (cake from M&S!)

wouldn't have changed an absolute thing. DH and I both agreed it was worth every penny

AgnesMcDoo · 21/07/2026 22:22

£5k for the wedding. 60 day guests plus another 60 evening guests. 3 course meal and then buffet at night.

Best party ever.

£5k for the honeymoon to the USA multi city trip.

n the 90s.

MaryBennetsGlasses · 21/07/2026 22:27

About £4000 for registry office, 50 people at our favourite restaurant and then buffet, booze and disco in our new house after.

That was my second wedding, the first was a full on white wedding with 150 for reception &meal and 200+ for the evening with band and disco but I have no idea how much that cost. My dad paid for it. He didn’t let me get involved and I just turned up to an organised event. I was young - in my early 20s

My second wedding was the real deal, paid for by us and full of joy with our closest family and friends. 20 years and counting ❤️

RisingSunn · 21/07/2026 22:27

£20,000 15 years ago.
Seperate reception hall for the children (with staff) so the adults could really enjoy themselves.

Absolute blast.

GrillaMilla · 21/07/2026 22:28

Married in the 1990's, church wedding then hotel for meal for about 25 guests, then about 100 for disco and buffet in evening.
Dress was in the sale for about £200.

Someone made the cake as their present to us. One set of parents paid for photographer, the other for the cars. Honeymoon in Wales.
Presents included towels, glasses, sandwich maker, all much appreciated.
I think we spent about £2,000 in all.

How did you end up spending that much for not a very large wedding and getting some things in a sale or from M&S? Did you pay yourselves?

Nowedding · 21/07/2026 22:34

Under £1k, including fees, rings etc. Just us and our 2 daughters as witnesses. Followed by cocktails and then lunch in our favourite regular restaurant. It was a lovely day

You must mean £6000?

Hotterthebetter · 21/07/2026 22:42

Around £5k - mid 90s
registry office ceremony then 60 guests for sit down 3 course meal at local hotel plus another 50 evening guests for dancing and late night buffet.
We had the absolute best day and friends still say it’s the best wedding they’ve ever been to.

Domiesjola · 21/07/2026 22:43

Church wedding, 100 sit down guests for wedding breakfast ,further 100 for evening reception,£250 wedding cake, we paid for all the bridesmaids dresses ,make up ,hair my dress about £700 ,paid for coach from our town to reception. Think the overall price was about £20K . My darling Mum paid for most of the wedding. This was in 1992 . On reflection pretty shocked at spending so much on one day and that we don’t have anything like that amount of money spare for my children when they get married!

PermanentTemporary · 21/07/2026 22:43

We’re probably going to spend nearly £30k entertaining 120 guests. Church wedding, garden party with a marquee in a field near our house. High end canapes and mobile bar. No evening do. It costs a lot to try to recreate what a decent wedding venue would include as a package, BUT you get to pick exactly what you want. Trouble is, the bits that each of us would save on, the other would splurge, so it’s expanded somewhat.

Yellowshirt · 21/07/2026 22:45

My wedding cost about £20000 in 2010. All of it was paid for using a massive overdraft in my name ,credit cards and payday loans. I found out about the debt in 2014, 1 week after finding out about my wife's affair.

The day was actually brilliant but it was also the biggest mistake of my life.

I have no idea of the true cost of the wedding including all interest we paid. I also had 3 ccjs in my name. I lost absolutely everything to that woman including my house.
Never again.

isthisnormal1971 · 21/07/2026 22:47

70k 2010 - 240 guests - loved it and invited all family and friends all day. Both large families that live on small islands in Scotland so had to invite all day as not making a trip to mainland for night. Cost a fortune but we could afford it. Equally my sister spent £12k and had 140 people 2013 and had the same fun. She spent what she could afford

boredwfh · 21/07/2026 22:53

2014/15 NYE wedding 100 guests, £30k all out wedding. God knows what it would cost now. Didn’t think it was bad given it was nye we had fireworks, top end menu, entertainment plus DJ etc

Wow that’s a bargain for so many people

CormorantWings · 21/07/2026 22:55

My parents paid for mine so I don't know.

TragicMuse · 21/07/2026 23:11

Amazing venue which was new to weddings so was dirt cheap! We had 120 guests start to finish, no separate evening arrivals and we married as late in the day as legally possible so we only needed to feed them once!

Free bar but no spirits. Unlimited wine, barrel of beer, barrel of cider, more Cremant than you can imagine!

Fabulous food - 4 choices. And canapés during the photographs.

BUT, dress from Monsoon, mates rates on the photographer (professional), friend provided DJ rig and other friends took 30 minutes turns to run the decks. I got a very good deal on the wine from Laithwaites. I made the cake. I also hand-made the invitations and we printed our own order of service. No fancy cars. I booked a cab to arrive and waved one down in the street to go home.

I spent the most on food and drink - easily nearly half the budget.

Think it was £8k. But might have been £6.5. Can’t actually remember now!

Best day and worth every penny. 20 years later he’s still the best!

purplewibble · 21/07/2026 23:15

2002, 40 guests - church wedding, reception in my tiny house/garden then evening do in function room of my local pub. £2500 including rings and engagement ring. Best ever wedding!

toooldforthisshiz · 21/07/2026 23:17

2010's
Registry office 4pm ceremony with dj and hog roast. 100 guests at the golf club. Dress off ebay and most of the gifts were part of the wedding. Mum got the car, friend made a cake, another friend did photos. Honeymoon in Norway for 1 week. 3k all in.
A marriage is more important than a wedding.

Pounala · 21/07/2026 23:22

We never sat down and added up the total cost tbh. DH and I paid for separate bits and at different times. Married in 2012 and the dinner cost a lot - big family and high quality food, and we had a second meal overseas where DH's family live, we paid for accommodation for my family. But it was quite pared back in other ways, no make up artist or hairdresser, no flowers, cake or entertainment. It didn't cost more than we already had in general savings, and we didn't particularly budget for it.
