What age did you decide to embrace your grey ?

Keep seeping so many grey blending videos and can’t tell if that’s just my algorithm or it’s actaully getting more popular

It was in lockdown, so 51. I was someone who could have it dyed and in a week the roots would start coming through. I was fed up of it.

I couldn't care less what age a stranger on the street thinks I am. Friends might have their opinions but none would be so rude as to say it out loud! Some have also just embraced the grey like me anyway.

I'm not in the sort of circles that use any major anti aging stuff anyway, like I don't personally know anyone who's had botox. We're not really an "image conscious" bunch. I can't imagine wasting my time fretting over wrinkles or grey hair. That's not the sort of life I'd want so that's probably why the friends I make have a similar outlook to me. I think if you're surrounded by people doing all this stuff, it does create a certain pressure.

At 43 I had grey blending, now 47 and it’s all natural apart from the occasional grey or lilac toner. My hair was very dark naturally and I had been dyeing it since my teens. Started getting the odd grey hair at 21 and by my early 40s was 50% grey. It became resistant to colour and every brown dye started to turn brassy very quickly. I’m lucky though that it is still a darkish grey with lighter grey highlights that are quite even and people do assume it’s not natural.

CrochetMadRosie · 20/07/2026 11:11

18! I have a mallen streak which has steadily increased in size since then.
I quite like it though…

ElegantlyDressing · 20/07/2026 11:14

Late 50s I've never dyed mine but I do use a colour conditioning shampoo which tones down the greys (naturally deep brown hair with only a few so far, a thin stripe at the parting and a few underneath, the shampoo makes the greys a deep blonde). I will probably just keep going with that until there is significant grey and let it go at that point, I don't intend to ever use proper dye.

OtterlyAstounding · 20/07/2026 11:18

I dyed my hair wild colours a lot for fun when I was young, but in my late thirties I can't be bothered anymore - I like my natural shade of brown better. It's getting a few strands of silver in it now (clustered together near the front, which makes me hope for a stripe) and I'm honestly looking forward to it slowly going grey.

Our facial colouring (eyes, lips etc) fades as we age, and grey hair flatters that. Those who dye their hair once they're grey so often choose colours that are too vibrant, and end up looking facially washed out with hair that looks unnatural. Going lighter than your original hair colour can work to balance that out, but I figure it's just easier to go with the grey!

The ageism and revulsion around grey hair is fucking insane, frankly. Grey is a lovely colour (there was a trend for dying your hair grey several years back) and there's nothing wrong with it.

I'm approaching mid-60's and no idea if I have any grey hair. I've always been blond but now am helped to stay so by my wonderful hairdresser. He is a brilliant colourist.

This but I know I have greys. From the next colour switching to just highlights rather than a light brown colour and two shades of highlights. Have concluded I'll look dyed at 70 if there's no evidence of grey.

Right from the start - I think the first grey hairs started appearing in my 30s. I never wanted to get trapped into the cycle of dyeing it every month.

Me too!

I had seen so many 'mature' ladies with brown hair and grey roots that I was determined not to be like them.

Els1e · 20/07/2026 11:51

Another one who did it during lockdown. I was in my early 60's. No regrets.

BuntyBeaufort · 20/07/2026 11:58

When DH went grey too, so that I didn’t look like his mother 😂

The stroppy side of me thinks why the fuck is it ok for men never to dye their hair , why are we all so conditioned & pressured into it ???
We aren’t , you maybe are but there are lots of women who never dye their hair or feel the pressure to do so .

Of course there are women who don’t give in to societal pressure, but they are in the minority, otherwise it wouldn’t be such a talking point. People don’t tend to say ‘Oh, I see you colour your hair’, but I wish I had a quid for everyone commenting ‘Oh, I see you’re embracing the grey’. Well, I say people, it’s exclusively women. And sometimes it’s said in a way to suggest you are extremely ‘brave’, sometimes to tell you it looks good and other times to imply that you might want to rethink that. I suppose if you never ever dye your hair, you are less likely to get these comments. But by Jeez, everyone seems to have a flipping opinion on my grey hair. Plenty of compliments, which is lovely, but makes me feel a bit weird. Probably because it’s just hair.

Iliketulips · 20/07/2026 12:34

Never worried about it. I'm who I am, DH still says I'm attractive, have some lovely friends and it hasn't made a difference at work. I'm 59.

socks1107 · 20/07/2026 12:45

I’ve not dyed my hair in over 20 years and I’m late 40s now. I have a few strands of grey so appreciate I’ve been very lucky but I don’t intend to start now and will just go naturally grey as and when

supercrone · 20/07/2026 12:52

I stayed going grey in very early 20s and just let out go. Pretty much totally white by 40s. It was fine. Saved a lot of time and money!

TheyGrewUp · 20/07/2026 13:57

I think it depends on the pattern of grey. If my silver hairs were evenly distributed, that would be great. However, I am grey at the front and more on the right than the left. It looks bloody awful.

smallglassbottle · 20/07/2026 14:06

I can't have any colour on because my scalp has become allergic and irritated by all products apart from shampoo bars. I'm lucky because my hair is dark blonde and the grey is blending in well.

OneLimePombear · 20/07/2026 14:11

No yet, I’m 57, I don’t have a lot of grey so touch up the roots once a month at home, it only take 15 minutes for the whole process and costs a fiver.

Yes it’s so liberating.

mulberrymilk · 20/07/2026 14:29

I was 111 years old and in my coffin, and I just though, fuck it. I'll go grey.

IFancyGregDavies · 20/07/2026 14:48

I’m not colouring my greys yet. I do have highlights but that’s was because I fancied something different. I’m 45 and about 10% grey/white, it’s mostly underneath only a few on the top.

3peassuit · 21/07/2026 09:30

Mid fifties here. My hair was long and dark and seemed to age me overnight. I had it cut to shoulder length with long layers and silvery highlights. It took about a year to 18 months to grow out the dye.

Chouradanilova · 21/07/2026 09:50

My hair was dark brown/nearly black when I was young. The first greys appeared at age 24. I used box dyes for years, then at age 42 I had a toxic reaction to the dye. I was in hospital for three nights as the facial swelling was so severe. I had to stop using the dye for good. I got used to having grey hair over the years, although I didn’t like it at all as first. I’m 66 now, my hair is silver, it looks healthy and I think that I look ok (a fairly bright lipstick and a bit of eyebrow pencil helps).

OneLimePombear · 21/07/2026 11:39

Why don’t people dye their hair grey to avoid the growing out experience, or is that not a thing?

FastFood · 21/07/2026 11:43

Since forever but it's my grey that don't embrace me, I'm 46 and I'm still waiting for them to arrive, I just have a few and I'd love to have more.

DelurkingAJ · 21/07/2026 12:02

Never dyed my hair. Mid-40s now with a few coming through underneath at my temples. But, like PP, nearly all my close friends don’t dye their hair so having varying amounts of grey and I feel no pressure to dye. We’re beginning that awful phase where the odd person gets very ill or dies. It’s a privilege to grow old. I also married someone who will support whatever I want to do but is not keen on the very carefully curated look (and wasn’t in his 20s when we met), so again, no pressure there.

MightyGoldBear · 21/07/2026 12:03

30s
I've always had blonde highlights so the silver grows in like highlights I now just have the ends a platinum blonde so I can have fun colours.

I do find it sad there's so much judgement it's just a colour. I don't think you automatically look like a witch with silver hair. I think it can look very striking and beautiful.

No ones calling men that are silver old wizards are they. It's all silver fox for them.
