Is this enough food for eight at a barbecue?

Is this a good enough spread do you think for 8 people? 6 adults, a 12 year old and a 7 year old

Mains
10 x drumsticks (mix of seasoned and plain)
10 x sausage
12 x burger
10 x pork belly (spicy seasoning)

Sides (all home made)
Potato salad
Mexican rice
Corn salad
Normal salad
Coleslaw
Tomato, basil and mozzarella salad

Snacks for arrival
Crisps
Popcorn

Also rolls/bread and drinks etc.

Extra stuff i could rustle up if it doesn't look like enough
Corn on the cob
Halloumi
Asparagus

It would also be a shame to do such a lovely mix of salads and then something as dull as sausages and burgers, especially as you know that nearly half the people who're going specifically want the chicken drumsticks. I'd never eat a burger unless there was nothing else available and I'd judge you harshly for providing crap food.

But of course you also have to account for those who'll only ever eat sausages and burgers and nothing like bone in chicken or pork belly.

Edited

I think I have the mix right. Just the volume I was wondering.

Sounds perfect. I'd add the corn cobs but mostly because my kids love corn cobs and they're banging on the BBQ.

Plenty of food. Not everyone will eat two sausages.

Tabarnak · 17/07/2026 16:39

It's plenty of food.

You know your guests preferences and don't need to pander to MNers fussy tastes.

Weird how everyone loves potato salad at a bbq but thinks it’s rank from a tub.

I make mine with crème fraiche and feta and fresh mint and dp loves it despite a dislike of feta and fresh mint, the lunatic.

A good pudding is a skin on banana - slice the skin on the inside of the curve a couple of inches, shove in a few squares of chocolate, close over again and wrap in tinfoil. Put on the BBQ, when it’s all melted and lovely, open it, put whipped cream on the inside and eat with a spoon.

Gosh thays an old one, I think our views may differ on the definition of good.

That sounds delicious op! I think it’s a great variety and enough as well.

Oh god we had to endure these at Guide camp. That and bloody celery😫but preferences vary and sure lots of people think it's a delicious dessert 😉

These threads are always the same. Either too much or too little. You have too much. How on earth can a person eat a burger AND sausages AND chicken AND salads AND desserts, in one meal? Beef + pork + poultry + carbs + veggies + cream + fruit + sugar + cake, all in one day, one meal. Crazy.

My experience is usually adults will eat a hotdog and a burger and some a healthy amount of salad. And that's about it. A few will have one more thing but that's the exception rather than the rule. It's nice to have some alternatives in there though.

Think about it. How many McDonald's burgers could you eat and then how much more could you eat after that? Most people won't have more than one burger! At a BBQ people will generally eat a big more but not substantially.

So three meat items per person really is on the generous side. It's very easy to panic and think you need to do more than you need. My rule of thumb is to stick to your meat allocation of portions (2 or 3 max) and then bulk up with salads and crisps etc. But even then you will struggle to get through two good size salads and a coleslaw with 8 (including a child). Remember your meat is the expensive thing - you don't need to go overboard. Corn on cob is a good shout as an alternative as it's cheap.

Id go so far as to say the OP is probably feeding 16 with the original proposal.

Notsodisney · 17/07/2026 17:39

Do people on here cook all food at once or do you break it up with breaks in between? The latter usually needs more of the grilled food ime.

Depends on the occasion. Usually start with non BBQ stuff which fills up people and then they want less meat.

Meat usually takes as long as it takes! Better that than food poisoning!

BebbanburgIsMine · 17/07/2026 19:00

It depends on your guests tastes I suppose,

There’s very little I could eat from the savoury choices, and only the mixed berries if they were just served on their own and not with cream or meringue.

Why couldn't you eat any meat, cheese or salads? :)

We do that kind of thing in the woods and camping.

An baked apples, core them and fill with cinnamon and sugar, wrap in foil 🤤

Homemade potato salad is much nicer than the supermarket tubs. I find those are mostly mayonnaise, potatoes taste of nothing and can be quite vinegary.

I always make a potato salad for a BBQ or shared meal type thing

I think you need more meat and fewer sides. More sausages definitely.

I’d eat some of it, but I don’t like drumsticks or pork, I eat some cheese but not mozzarella.

I also dislike most salads if they have mayonnaise, salad cream or any other type of dairy in them, I’m not sure what Mexican Rice is like, so I might eat that.

I would only eat the mixed berries if they didn’t have any sort of cream with them.

However, I know I’m very fussy and if I was one of your guests I wouldn’t dream of saying anything, and would just eat what I could

I come from a culture where we feed people generously, so, to me, it's a bit measly and stingy to count 1 sausage, 1 burger, etc. per person. I'd definitely do more meat all around. As in double it. And instead of drumsticks, chicken skewers are easier to eat.

Otherwise, nice barbecue menu.

Stingy? It’s an enormous amount of food. She will be eating bbq for a week unless everyone is eating 3,000 calories in one meal.
