Is this enough food for eight at a barbecue?

BBQFood · 17/07/2026 10:50

Is this a good enough spread do you think for 8 people? 6 adults, a 12 year old and a 7 year old

Mains
10 x drumsticks (mix of seasoned and plain)
10 x sausage
12 x burger
10 x pork belly (spicy seasoning)

Sides (all home made)
Potato salad
Mexican rice
Corn salad
Normal salad
Coleslaw
Tomato, basil and mozzarella salad

Snacks for arrival
Crisps
Popcorn

Also rolls/bread and drinks etc.

Extra stuff i could rustle up if it doesn't look like enough
Corn on the cob
Halloumi
Asparagus

I come from a culture where we feed people generously, so, to me, it's a bit measly and stingy to count 1 sausage, 1 burger, etc. per person. I'd definitely do more meat all around. As in double it. And instead of drumsticks, chicken skewers are easier to eat.

Otherwise, nice barbecue menu.

Bitzee · 17/07/2026 14:50

That’s a lot of food! Assuming your kids aren’t big salad fans, because kids usually aren’t, you have an entire sharing salad per adult. I get catering to preferences but I also think it sounds like too much meat. Are people really going to eat 4 or 5 meat things each especially when one is a burger? With all that salad on top? And then pudding? Don’t get me wrong the spread sounds lovely and if you’d be happy to have leftovers then go for it but I definitely don’t think you need to worry about it being enough.

Hmmm. Don't want to be considered stingy :(

I will possibly do some extra sausages and some chicken skewers.

More sausages - at least 2 per person but I’d go three per person

Drum sticks are a pain in the arse. Get rid.

10 pork belly bites is enough for two people. Way more if you insist on having them at all.

Do people really eat three sausages as well as a burger and some belly strips etc?

@BBQFood not round my way!

asatelliteisnttoofarright · 17/07/2026 14:58

I’d add steaks as well. At least.

No but some people may only want sausages, some may be hungry, some may get dropped.

It’s better to have too much and eat leftovers (for example sausages can be eaten cold in sandwiches) than to have too little and leave your guests hungry.

I took the pork belly to be strips, the ones we get from our butchers are about the size of two sausages at least.

The OP is planning 42 pieces of meat, that probably weight 60 g each (sausages), 100 g each (burgers and meat on the drumsticks) and 150 g each (pork belly) between 8 people, 2 of which are children. That's over half a kilo of meat each plus plenty of salad and bread. How can it not be enough?

I can skip the rice and the tomato and mozzarella too if it looks too much :)

I'm not a veggie but to be honest at a BBQ I always prefer the salads to the meat so I'd love the rice salad and the tomato and mozzarella and pass on the meat!
I suppose you can't please everyone all the time. But hopefully you will know what the guests are likely to enjoy

Notsodisney · 17/07/2026 15:12

Is it the standard size sausages like you would have on breakfast? There is sausage and there is SAUSAGE😂 I admit I never grilled them but I assume they lose some weight in fat and moisture?

AmazonQueeen · 17/07/2026 15:51

Usually for a main meal at home I would have ONE burger. I don’t understand how anyone could be hungry with pork, chicken and sausage as well!

Hmm no. Knowing the audience, they won't eat just sausages.

12 yo will have burger and hotdog, she wouldn't eat more than that really.
7 yo will have drumsticks, belly strips and maybe a hot dog.
Adults will eat everything.

Nooo, keeping drumsticks, sorry. The 7yo, DH and MIL love them.

I regularly cook for large groups.

1 sausage, 1 burger and 1 pork belly is enough for most people in reality. I take it you are serving with buns? A couple of people might be greedy and have more, but that's enough meat. Having the drumsticks as extra is nice for choice but 3 meat items is enough for normal people.

Salads. Two salads and a coleslaw. That's plenty.

Plus you have crisps etc too. You will not be starving anyone.

More than this and you will have loads left over.

LightlyRoamingOcelots · 17/07/2026 16:02

I would be doing:
16 x drumsticks
18 x sausages
12 x burgers
12 x pork belly

I would be planning a few days with stirfry/curry with whatever random meat is left over following the bbq

HoppingPavlova · 17/07/2026 16:02

Nope. I’m in Aus and we live on the stuff.

Way too much meat and wrong mix if only for 1 meal. Think about it, would you really eat 1.5 drumsticks, 1.25 drumsticks, 1.25 sausages, 1.5 burgers and 1.25 pork belly PLUS 1.25 big bowls of substantial salad. No one can eat that.

I’d go 16 sausages and 8 burgers for meat if not wanting left overs. Add 3 salads and rolls. Then that’s approx 2 sausages, 1 burger, 1/3 big bowl salad and bread roll per person. That’s still a LOT of food for each persons plate. Would you really eat more than that?

Okay … so, 16 drumsticks, 16 sausages. That’s 2 drumsticks and 2 sausages per person, bread roll and ample salad if having 3 salads. Again, would you really eat more than that?

It's nice to have e more choice than burgers and hotdog, that's what we'd do for like a kids party BBQ or something with 30+ kids to keep it easy. This is only 8 people.

LightlyRoamingOcelots · 17/07/2026 16:07

It's about choice though. You don't imagine that each of the 8 guests will eat â…›th of what you provide but you cater with enough food for 12 and plan for leftovers to eat up over the next few days

As above, it's nice to mix and match at a BBQ. People generally like a little bit of everything.

OP posts:
Bjorkdidit · 17/07/2026 16:15

It would also be a shame to do such a lovely mix of salads and then something as dull as sausages and burgers, especially as you know that nearly half the people who're going specifically want the chicken drumsticks. I'd never eat a burger unless there was nothing else available and I'd judge you harshly for providing crap food.

But of course you also have to account for those who'll only ever eat sausages and burgers and nothing like bone in chicken or pork belly.

Sure, but you only have 8 people, so a little bit of everything would be 1 drumstick, 1 sausage, 1 burger and 1 pork belly, plus some of 6 different salads. Could you really eat that?

Maybe I couldn't but DH, BIL.and FIL could.

And we're very happy to use up any leftovers the next day or two. So it wouldn't go to waste.
