Is this enough food for eight at a barbecue?

Is this a good enough spread do you think for 8 people? 6 adults, a 12 year old and a 7 year old

Mains
10 x drumsticks (mix of seasoned and plain)
10 x sausage
12 x burger
10 x pork belly (spicy seasoning)

Sides (all home made)
Potato salad
Mexican rice
Corn salad
Normal salad
Coleslaw
Tomato, basil and mozzarella salad

Snacks for arrival
Crisps
Popcorn

Also rolls/bread and drinks etc.

Extra stuff i could rustle up if it doesn't look like enough
Corn on the cob
Halloumi
Asparagus

I’d do more meat but my family are meat mad, especially at a bbq. It’s quite prescriptive though.
We over estimate what we think we will need and then just eat any leftovers cold (well I don’t but everyone else here would!) and bbq anything that hasn’t been cooked another time.
i do appreciate a variety of sides though because if im invited to a burger and sausage type bbq i only eat the sides!

Sounds like enough food for thirty to me. Don't forget the buns/fresh bread though. Also what about dessert? I would put strawberries and blueberries in a big bowl and offer cream/ice cream. I would have a burger in a bun, a couple of spoons of salad and some fruit so there would be plenty left over for the other seven!

My daughter is veggie so I would do beanburgers or halloumi/pepper/courgette kebabs.

When the inlaws come over there are eight adults. We would do a burger each, a side of salmon, couple of packs of sausages, veggie kebabs, two or three salads, plenty of rolls and dessert. And there would be leftovers from that.

I'd sod off the potato salad and just do boiled new potatoes as they've mayo on the coleslaw

oh noooo - can't drop the potato salad, its been specifically requested by the other 7 people LOL i'd have to ditch a different one :D maybe the rice

Reply 2 tell you dessert options :)

Agree you can't ditch potato salad! DDs would stage a revolt.

They normally eat the sides.

I mean I’m sure they’ll eat plenty of them, I mean there is going to be tonnes and tonnes left by the sound of it.

I was born in South Africa. A braai is a big deal there, and the sides absolutely do matter. Everyone eats the sides.
Every braai I’ve ever hosted in Scotland has had loads of sides served, and they get eaten. Every time I’ve been to someone else’s, they also serve a bunch of sides.
Not sure who just eats a plate of meat and nothing else - that would be a pretty shit dinner invite.

Sorry I mean nobody is going to eat it all…they’ll probably have plenty, but there is going to be tonnes left based on this list

Sparkletastic · 17/07/2026 13:15

Sounds perfect OP. We love a chicken drumstick. 🍗

i could do skewers, I'm sure i have some chicken thighs in the freezer, but my DD and DH do like a drumstick ... maybe I'll swap

First time on MN I've seen people saying 'serve less salad'. But from seeing people's plates at BBQs most people seem to go for a sad looking burger with cheese in a bun with no salad whatsover, which just looks really unappetising.

Maybe ask DH and DD if they're happy to not have sausages until everyone else has had a chance seeing as the drumsticks are for them, as many people won't eat them.

From that selection I'd have a piece of pork belly and a chicken drumstick, although I prefer boneless thighs as easier to eat and some of all the salads. Maybe a sausage or second piece of pork belly if I was still hungry. I wouldn't eat a burger.

Ilovelurchers · 17/07/2026 13:25

If you do decide to ditch any salads I would ditch the rice one and the corn one (I don't know exactly what a corn salad is). I think the remaining ones have better variety.

But you seen pretty confident your guests will enjoy the salads, and I presume you have both ingredients and time to make them all, so why not?

The BBQ sounds great. But it wouldn't hurt to have a back-uobpack of sausages, just in case people eat more meat than you expect.

Imaribenaberry · 17/07/2026 13:29

It sounds like a lovely spread but would double the amount of sausages and burgers at least.

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 17/07/2026 13:29

These days I do 2 types meat max, 2/3 salads normally a green one a more exciting one and maybe corn on cob and then a carb potatoes and or bread. It’s always enough choice.

GreenLemonade · 17/07/2026 13:39

It’s definitely enough food. I agree that you could add more sausages. Personally, I prefer boneless cuts of chicken. I would also swap one of the meats for halloumi for variety. But you know best what your guests like.

wishingonastar101 · 17/07/2026 13:39

I don't really like sausages, burgers etc on the bbq.
I would do bavette steak and slice it thinly so everyone gets some, make a big jar of chimichurri... salads, corn on the cobs on the bbq, pork ribs, chicken or Halloumi kebabs with baby mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers etc all on the skewer. even chuck on cauliflower or beetroots...
Really nice fluffy pitta breads - the big rounds ones. Oh labneh and hummus...

Notsodisney · 17/07/2026 13:43

Damn it now I fancy think crispy arayes😂

the corn salad is sweetcorn, tomato, red onions, cioriander in a olive oil and lime juice dressing.

I think it sounds bloody lovely! Maybe have some extra sausages and burgers or something as a quick back up.
Do you live in the south-east? What time do you want me round? 😉

RoseOliviaAu · 17/07/2026 13:52

It’s actually way too much

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 17/07/2026 13:53

That's an average of 6 meaty bits for each person, so more than enough. Not everyone will have 6 bits. Looks lovely!

RoseOliviaAu · 17/07/2026 13:54

Laska2Meryls · 17/07/2026 12:29

I'd double the sausages and the drumsticks ( but then I find we eat a lot of meat in our family bbqs)

I'd also do garlic bread on the bbq ( wrapped in foil) and a yoghurt bases dip and salsa

Edited

You’d expect people to eat 3 drumsticks, 3 sausages plus burgers and all those sides plus bread?

AmazonQueeen · 17/07/2026 13:56

I’d eat a drumstick and a sausage, maybe a burger if pushed and then LOADS of salad . I’d be really happy to see a table loaded with salad!!

looks like plenty to me.

BlackCatBea · 17/07/2026 14:03

Add 8 more sausages and It’s perfect! Could chop the pork belly and put it on skewers with pieces of red pepper if you can be bothered, if not leave as is

Growlybear83 · 17/07/2026 14:12

I don’t think youve allowed nearly enough meat.

FallenNight · 17/07/2026 14:14

Sounds good to me.

I love the variety of salads, personally I am not keen on a meat and bread heavy BBQ. Also, I love a left over salad day so if you have over catered and there are lots of leftover salads you have a good food day to look forward to after your BBQ.

whatonearthishappenin · 17/07/2026 14:22

Sounds bloody gorgeous.

I'd just double the sausages but maybe my family are greedy!!!
