Mancunians, anyone else getting a sore throat/chest from smoke?

Closed all windows but had to run quite a few errands today. Let dogs out. Bedroom is roasting but can't open windows. Chest is feeling quite irritated now.

It's awful and whole house stinks like a BBQ.

The fire is a mile from my house. It's awful and we are all furious. The Tintwistle fire is much larger than the Dovestones one but they are both just as bad as the 2018 fires. We have given up trying to keep out of the smoke. It's heartbreaking.

I work in a very large, air-conditioned office building in the city centre and we could all smell it even in the office yesterday; it was really noticeable.

I'm not usually sensitive to smoke but it definitely affected my sinuses yesterday.

I'm in Stalybridge right now, the town is full of smoke it stinks and my eyes are stinging. Ive only been here an hour so it must be awful for those who live here.

Can't believe the stupidity of people deliberately setting fires. Infuriating.

Woodhead Pass now closed due to a moorland fire started by a vehicle fire. Not expected to open till at least Sunday. I’m amazed greater Manchester has enough fire engines to cope.

Woodhead pass would probably be covered by multiple fire services, not just Greater Manchester.

Plus neighbouring services will be providing support, so I expect there's involvement from Lancashire, West and South Yorkshire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Derbyshire.

I could smell the smoke in Eccles ( west of the city centre and over 20 miles from Dovestones) this morning.

As I understand it there are now 4 fires.
The big one at Tintwistle that has been going on and off for weeks, the Dovestones fireworks one which is on its 7th day , another unrelated one near Dovestones/Glossop and one on the Woodhead pass that was started by a car catching fire.
The Woodhead pass firefight is being lead by south Yorkshire fire service, the Tintwistle one by Derbyshire FS and the others by Greater Manchester FS although obviously many other crews from other local regions will be assisting. United Utilities is providing support with water drops from helicopters and local gamekeepers are also helping with the firefighting.

There is also another fire on Marston Moor in West Yorkshire which is also not that far away.

Obviously the dry weather, heatwave and strong winds have caused the conditions where accidents and stupidity can cause such terrible situations so easily.

In the past the moors ( which were/are used for grouse hunting) were burned in patches in a controlled way to reduce cover for hunting. Policy has changed because it reduces biodiversity and endangers rare flora and fauna. There is some debate now though saying that the controlled burning of smaller patches acted incidentally as firebreaks and that had this still been policy the fires wouldn't have been so bad.

I'm not sure what I think about the grouse hunting thing ( hate the idea of it really) . I think there needs to be a lot more public education about why having BBQs/ leaving glass bottles around is so dangerous and of course the firework thing was completely stupid (maybe when they find those responsible the should be made to do 8 hour shifts with fire fighters until the fire is out?) but I also think there needs to be some planning around how to create some natural firebreaks. Even if no-one did anything stupid there's still the possibility of accidents like the car fire starting things.
