Mancunians, anyone else getting a sore throat/chest from smoke?

Closed all windows but had to run quite a few errands today. Let dogs out. Bedroom is roasting but can't open windows. Chest is feeling quite irritated now.

It's awful and whole house stinks like a BBQ.

Yes it's really annoying because the evening is the time when you're supposed to be able to open the windows and let the cool air in but it smells like a bonfire in my back garden so all our windows are firmly closed

MrsTomRipley · 12/07/2026 22:39

Yes it stinks.

Am feeling quite suffocated (a bit dramatic I know but literally no fresh air!)

Im absolutely furious with the idiots letting off fireworks. Cant open windows. I live very close to one of the fires its actually scary. Ash falling down around the house.

RedToothBrush · 12/07/2026 22:51

DH went into central Manchester today and said the smog was terrible.

We live further out and it's awful enough here tonight. Apparently it can be smelt as far as Liverpool.

GooseyGee · 12/07/2026 22:52

Just came upstairs to find my bloody bedroom windows wide open! No wonder I have a sore chest!!

I’m in Liverpool. We’ve had to shut all the windows. The house smells like a dirty ashtray. It’s crazy how far it can travel! Apparently there’s ash all over Warrington. I can only imagine how much worse it must be in Manc. You have my sympathy!

JulietteHasAGun · 12/07/2026 22:55

Manchester currently has the worst air quality in whole of Europe. 24x above recommended safe limits i believe.

They filmed themselves doing it, laughing, seeing the fire start, letting more off, doing nitrous oxide and driving…..put the videos all over social media inc the Dovestone fb page. Everyone knows who it is, police have obviously been told. The girl works in a local nursery!

Outskirts of Liverpool. I thought it was Billy Bonfire next door as I could smell smoke upstairs. I was hanging out the bedroom window trying to spot where the smell was coming from but nothing to be seen.
Then a family member came in who had driven over from Leeds and passed by Manchester on the M62. He told me what had happened. He was very shocked at the smog hanging over the city.

RedToothBrush · 12/07/2026 23:02

DH thought it was raining when he just went outside. It's not. Must be the ash.

KittyWilkinson · 12/07/2026 23:02

That's really scary for you all. I'm so sorry.

Whyohwhy1974 · 12/07/2026 23:04

Yep, it's terrible here but have had to open the windows for a bit of a cool breeze. Whole house smells of it.

Just looked at a live air quality map.

It has the fires marked on it.

Currently the air quality is worst in Liverpool, which shows how much it's drifting.

Can someone explain? Not in Manchester but DS is.

Wow. Must depend on the wind and how far it’s carried before it starts to drop? Wind obviously going east to west. I’m a bit north of the fires and can’t smell anything but am closer to the fires than Liverpool is. It has been breezy today, hopefully the winds die down which will help stop the fires spreading as well as stop the smoke travelling so far.

Big fires just to the east of the city at Dovestones reservoir. Idiots set fireworks off and all the vegetation went up.

Ohpleeeease · 12/07/2026 23:18

Thanks, @JulietteHasAGun. Looking at the fires in Almería with devastating consequences you’d think people would have more sense.

RockinCara · 12/07/2026 23:43

We are a couple of miles away from the fires, but luckily for us the wind is blowing away from us. But I can see the absolute devastation of the hillsides.

Ive seen some of the videos. Like most other local people, I’m furious. Such a stupid thing to do and I couldn’t think of a worse way to pay tribute to someone who died.

JulietteHasAGun · 13/07/2026 15:55

I hear it’s just as bad today, some schools are closing early due to air quality. Seems the fire brigade have established a water supply now so hopefully that helps. Some of the photos on social media are awful. The fire is so big. Not sure how they’re getting on with the Tintwhistle fire reigniting either.

Also the 20yo female lowlife who filmed herself on social media starting it has been arrested

I’ve just been for a walk on the moors above us. You can usually see Manchester and down to Cheshire from here, but all I can see is smoke engulfing everything. I’m feeling very relieved that the wind is (unusually) blowing it away from us. We’re only 3 miles from the fire.

I was really struggling last night with it. Had to close the window because it was a toss up between not breathing and boiling to death, and breathing won out.
This always seems to happen to me! We lived in Newton-le-Willows when there was that plastic recycling fire on the hottest day of the year, and had to close all our windows then too!

I didn’t realise the morons that started it were laughing about it?! I just assumed they were stupid kids who didn’t realise.

JulietteHasAGun · 13/07/2026 17:33

@paintedpanda they set fireworks off, saw the smoke start, were laughing. Drove a bit and set more fireworks off. Filmed the smoke while laughing and drove off still laughing. Don’t believe they called the fire brigade at all.

JulietteHasAGun · 13/07/2026 21:44

They’ve got helicopters dropping water on the tintwhistle fire this evening. This was a photo on Reddit of the fire last night, taken from near glossop.

Smog over Merseyside earlier and a definite tinge to the sunset. And the acrid smell of burning since yesterday evening. Wasn't sure if it's from Dovestones or Conwy as the wind is usually westerly here. Didn't smell anything in Stockport at lunchtime though.
