Mancunians, anyone else getting a sore throat/chest from smoke?

Closed all windows but had to run quite a few errands today. Let dogs out. Bedroom is roasting but can't open windows. Chest is feeling quite irritated now.

It's awful and whole house stinks like a BBQ.

Yes it’s pretty bad - really gets to your throat.

RainBow725 · 13/07/2026 23:47

It’s really awful. I am surprised there’s not more on the news about the air quality.

They filmed themselves doing it, laughing, seeing the fire start, letting more off, doing nitrous oxide and driving…..put the videos all over social media inc the Dovestone fb page. Everyone knows who it is, police have obviously been told. The girl works in a local nursery!

Hope they are arrested for this. Ignorant destructive cunts

@paintedpanda they set fireworks off, saw the smoke start, were laughing. Drove a bit and set more fireworks off. Filmed the smoke while laughing and drove off still laughing. Don’t believe they called the fire brigade at all.

Wow, I’m actually amazed at the stupidity. Why would anyone think doing this was funny? I’ve seen one of them has been arrested, I hope they get the rest of them and they get charged and sentenced.

I was wondering who’s having bbqs everyday???🙄🙄🙄

Changedforsafety · 14/07/2026 07:07

Im in Stockport , it smells dreadful at the back of my house and in the garden, worse than yesterday ! Pity anyone with a chest complaint.

RedToothBrush · 14/07/2026 07:22

Stockport just.

Definitely worse. See previous map I posted for comparison.

Map is showing red and ratings of 171. That's deeply unpleasant and a 'stay indoors and shut the windows' day.

I really feel for you all

The people who did this, I don't know what the penalties are for arson. Not strong enough I imagine.

I feel as if there's been a massive outbreak of stupid in recent years. what is actually wrong with these people?

KittyWilkinson · 14/07/2026 10:26

We were walking along the canal path yesterday afternoon in West Lancs and could smell smoke. There was quite a strong breeze.
The air quality over Manchester is very disturbing indeed looking at that chart from this morning. No sign of welcome rain looking at the forecast.

Dontgetstuckinthepast · 14/07/2026 10:34

The thick arsonists let off fireworks to "commemorate" their mate who had drowned in the reservoir a couple of days before.

The only upside is that they left such a trail of social media posts it should be possible to secure a conviction. One has been arrested already.

SwedishEdith · 14/07/2026 10:35

It's really bad this morning. Needed to close all the windows (would anyway with the heat but you can smell it in the house). There's a haze in the air. Yesterday, I tasted a strange tang whenever I licked my lips - think that was a smoke taste.

RockinCara · 14/07/2026 10:35

I’ve been for a walk this morning and the smoke is still there, but there is a lot less (that back hill in the picture is Dovestones). Hopefully they’ve got it more under control.

I saw a Facebook post this morning with a screenshot from the page of the lady they’ve arrested. She was bragging that they’d “smoked out the whole country” and saying that the lad who had died would have been made up with what they’d done for him.

It's worse here today (Trafford) I've just been out and my eyes are stinging. Agree with pp anyone with chest and lung conditions must be struggling.

ExpressCheckout · 14/07/2026 14:22

It's terrible in Stockport, I don't have asthma but I feel for folks who do, never known it this bad.

She's been arrested, appeared in court today and remanded until August.

Can still smell it this morning in Altrincham. Both DH and I have woken up with itchy eyes. Window was open last night.

AliasGrape · 15/07/2026 07:45

Just outside Stockport - my chest was really bad yesterday (I have asthma but usually very well controlled), haven’t noticed it too much this morning yet but all curtains still currently closed to will see shortly.

Appletree56 · 15/07/2026 07:48

It must be awful for you. I'm in Shropshire and could smell it yesterday

Same, I was shocked how much I could smell it today.

Thinking of the fire crews dealing with it in this heat too, how awful.

They need to ban the sale of fireworks to the public, people are idiots and there’s no need for them to be so readily available, they’re a nightmare for pets/wildlife in general and this huge fire risk.

FeltCarrot · 15/07/2026 08:06

Agree fireworks should be banned.

Rainbows246 · 15/07/2026 08:27

i’m in Salford and went outside at work yesterday about 5 and it was so hazy and the air hit the back of my throat. Burning smell was worse yesterday. I’ve a croaky throat today but that could also be my hayfever. Still can smell burning on the wind.

RedToothBrush · 15/07/2026 08:32

I was appalling here about midnight last night. It was like there was smoke in the street. Not haze. Just smoke.

It's improved considerably this morning.

I checked the local air quality readings and we were close to 180 last night.

It had been fine all day yesterday and even when it wasn't great the other night it wasn't as bad as that. I've never experienced it as bad as last night.

Given how far we are away, it's crazy.

apparently he didn't just drown. He was using one of the concrete overflows as a slide (they are incredibly steep) and hit a stone wall. Unfortunately there's videos all over social media of people doing these stunts.
The locals have begged Oldham council to stop promoting visits to the site (they own the car park so make ££) and also begged united utilities and RSPB to secure the site and have better protection of the land and reservoir. I have to question why anyone can access working parts of it to muck about to be honest.
Time to ban fireworks and maybe have a pass system with car registrations logged for those driving and parking so if any fires happen the police can start their enquiries with those people first.
