God it's rich of all those Labour MPs to applaud him like that when they shivved him in the first place.

I wonder what a Labour-Binface coalition might look like. Where CB (were he to win) is informally (or, fuck it, formally) invited to advise the government.

I don’t care who gets what job as long as they’re competent. I’d love Starmer to get the FO, he’d be perfect, it’s a shame it’s so improbable.

I can see why AB might shy away from that, as he can’t completely ignore the anxieties of the market.

Mahmoud might be a good compromise and it could be a good idea to move her away from the position of Home Secretary - maybe move Yvette Cooper back?

Totally agree. He's a real diplomat which is what you need for the FO.

"The market" had it's chance in 2008.

I'm surprised, in view of how left wing Milliband is seen to be. OTOH, he does have Treasury experience, which is in his favour.

It might be simply that AB is trying to avoid as much controversy as possible initially. Milliband is presented as being ‘red Ed’ by the right wing Press.

Of course, we don't know yet, it’s still speculation.

I definitely read something that suggested the business types prefer him.

I think the scare around EM is not leftism, but competence. As in he may very well be competent enough to make a difference.

GB Energy seems to have quietly started making some changes. Which will stand the UK in good stead with the toddler in the Whitehouse blundering around the world.

I think Starmer would have been good at FO. However now I don’t think it will work. The leaders and the media knows what his views are. Easier to defend a change in policy if you weren’t setting it two months ago.

In a year or so might work, but does Starmer want it? I think he might be very happy giving his views privately while on the backbenches.

If Starmer does not stand again at the next election can he automatically go to the Lords already as a life peer or it now honorary when he stood as an MP?

Didn’t Starmer’s name get mentioned as a possible Sec General of NATO although I think Mark Rutte has a couple of years to go. Or was it the UN. I’m sure he’ll have ambitions for a role like that. He clearly has talents in that direction.

Agree, or possibly some sort of special ambassador/envoy type role or maybe he just wants a rest regroup & spend more time with his family whatever he does I wish him well.

You make very good points there, I think he could well do a good job. And we need someone decisive in that role.

But it would be a risky appointment politically because of the scare mongering of the Press, and Labour’s continued unpopularity in the polls, despite AB’s positive approval ratings. Which could easily disappear very quickly.

Racially motivated?

I don't think they know. But she was certainly not of the same race as her attacker which is very unusual.

I don't think it's helpful to leap to conclusions either way at this point. There's a risk it was racially motivated and that's awful if so (it's still awful to be.honest). But it will still be just as awful when the police have had time to release more information. I don't think the people who immediately start speculating and demanding instant gratification on their suspicions help in these situations (not accusing anyone on this thread of this).

I wasn't doing that really.

My interest is in why there has been so very little coverage of a woman murdered on her doorstep by a complete stranger when the murders of other women (not specifically AW but they are concurrent) garner so may headlines.

I read a really interesting study once on the reporting of VAWG specifically murders dependent on social class and race.

But two women were murdered by complete strangers more or less on the same day - and that is a vanishingly rare crime.

At the time of Sarah Everard's murder there was another young woman murdered by a stranger (to my shame I have forgotten her name - which is telling) and one case is still far more famous than the other. Partly this is because of who the perpetrator was, of course, but I do think the inconvenient truth is also that the race of the victim plays its part - as also with the murders of the sisters in the park.

And the racism I saw on Facebook posts about this recent victim made me feel sick.

Off to find out the other victims' names so I don't leave them nameless.
