Celebrity obsession.....I just don't get it....It's ridiculous IMO

News full of Taylor Swift's wedding. I mean who, other than her friends and family, should actually care. The sycophantic fawning is nauseating. What skills do these "celebrities" actually have to warrant such obsession? Are they finding a cure for diseases or working to end poverty/hunger/war? Nope. Screwed up world.

Freddie Mercury and Jane McDonald are not even in the same stratosphere in my opinion

(soz Jane)

I don’t disagree with you, but Jane is still way above a Z.

What are you interested in, OP?

What are you interested in, OP?

Gardening, nature, walking, my family, history, crafts,.....

I enjoy certain TV/films but don't give a shit about an actors personal life, in the same way I don't want to know my bank managers/doctors/dentists personal life.

I think Freddie Mercury had one of the best voices ever, but his personal life wasn't of any interest to me.

Would you ever watch a biopic or read an autobiography @PinkHollyhocks?

Morepositivemum · 04/07/2026 18:47

Celebrities do more than people give them credit for, a lot studied their craft, practiced, got rejected but kept going, Taylor Swift inspires people in particular young artists, she gives to charity and writes songs that make some young people feel like they’re not alone or teach people they shouldn't put up with crap! I get anti celebrity culture for people famous eg because of their name, but not for grifters

Thecows · 04/07/2026 21:38

I don't really get it but no harm whatsoever and she seems a very decent person

emmetgirl · 04/07/2026 21:47

I’m leaving this here.

Yea I don’t get it. Even if I was a fan I’d be mildly interested, but I could hold off til the Hello! pics. I could see a 12/13 year old getting excited but after that? Come on.

The cult of celebrity doesn’t really do us any favours. It means that some people end up being obscenely wealthy in a way that is out of proportion to the actual work that they do. I do appreciate people who have talent in music, sport, theatre etc. But I don’t think their work is worth many millions more than the work of ordinary people.

I also don’t see very many celebrities setting a good example with regards to living sustainably (because it’s not really possible to go on a world tour in a sustainable way!) and that’s disappointing because they are role models and we all really really need to be trying to live more sustainably in my opinion.

As for the wedding- people (mostly women) have always been interested in weddings; especially celebrity weddings.

Taylor Swift seems like a nice person and has some genuine talent. But her lifestyle is not admirable to me because I think it’s probably not very good for the planet on the whole. I also don’t think she is worth more than a nurse or a bin collector. It’s disappointing that the idea that there are VIPs is still alive and kicking. We’re all just humans with the same inherent worth.

I would rather see more attention on people who are quietly getting on with things that benefit the greater good. Charity workers, foster carers, that sort of thing.

It's a crazy world when you get a top actor paid many times more to pretend to be a doctor then an actual doctor would earn.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 04/07/2026 22:42

Many of her fans have grown up with her. She’s been releasing albums for 20 years and the personal lyrics resonate with her fans, so of course they feel a connection to her. Having listened to lyrics about her hopes and heartbreaks for 20 years, to see her finally marrying someone who seems to support her and is demonstrably proud of her just makes her fans feel so happy for her. If you want to shit on that, feel free, but it’s just a bit sad that anyone feels the need to question why some people enjoy things that they don’t. I don’t understand football fans travelling the world and getting emotionally invested in the outcome of a bunch of men kicking a ball around, but I don’t feel the need to go round telling them that.

SpottyAlpaca · 04/07/2026 22:44

Bizarrely, the Swift Kelce wedding was the second item on the Radio 4 Today programme news this morning. I lay in bed listening to it thinking ‘I wonder how many other R4 listeners are asking themselves ‘who the hell is Taylor Swift?’

I wouldn’t describe myself as a Swiftie, but I acknowledge that she’s a talented songwriter & performer. Albeit one who financially rinses her fanbase with a ruthlessness which would make Elon Musk blush. But the media’s obsession with her personal life, even going as far as R4, is completely ridiculous.

annanardini · 05/07/2026 13:10

Taylor would never sell her wedding pictures to the media.

tartyflette · 05/07/2026 13:16

I went to see the Stones - twice - in the late 60s. It was a total waste of time and money, the screaming that started up as soon as they appeared on stage meant you could not hear a note. Literally nothing over that deafening, deafening din.
’Twas ever thus.

CherryRipe1 · 05/07/2026 13:19

The Goss twins? Matt and Luke of Bros, their mum worked at the same place as my friend. She said it was a nightmare with the fans swarming round their home.

Jk987 · 05/07/2026 13:22

Chill out, it’s escapism, enjoyment, nosiness, distraction from real life.
Why are you trying to put them down by questioning their skills? Everyone is different. Maybe they got lucky, maybe they work damn hard. Either way, there is no gain from begrudging it.

I watched a documentary on Anita Pallenberg, who was a kind of Seventies Supergroupie and how she worked her way through the Rolling Stones (she slept with 3 out of 5 of them) before landing a very shy and virginal looking Keith Richards. He later dumped her for Patti Hansen, who he is still with today...

You sound insufferable

🤣 she really doesn't. I agree OP, adulation of a person just because they are famous for whatever reason, is just odd

I also think this with the royal family who are worshipped purely for being born

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 05/07/2026 13:55

Well, she must be important, it's on the BBC news front page. But search in vain for the latest body count from Venezuela. What a world.

JoeTheDrummer · 05/07/2026 14:24

I’m interested in her wedding. I’ve always enjoyed her music, and nice to see something joyful in the news. In the words of Taylor herself…

“The worst kind of person is someone who makes someone feel bad, dumb or stupid for being excited about something”

KimWexlersPonyTail · 05/07/2026 14:27

I remember when Mick Jagger married Bianca it was big news, don't get me started on the bloody circus around Burton and Taylor

I’m not interested in much celeb stuff - david beckham and random other celebs at Wimbledon? I couldn’t care less and am annoyed that info even enters my brain. I do want to see Taylor Swift’s wedding dress though. I love fashion and I’m a Swifty who saw her in London on the eras tour with my teen daughters. I love wedding dresses - obsessed with day yes to the dress and Randy 🤣 guilty pleasure I won’t apologise for.

Taylor’s charitable donations are noteworthy but not largely publicised.

BettyJoanPerske · 05/07/2026 15:10

As I said on the other thread about her, I'm just glad that there were no Kardashians at their wedding. I get that not everyone like TS, but at least she is famous for something other than having a ginormous rear end and a string of fake romances.

Why would the Kardashian’s be there? She literally disappeared for a year because of Kim Kardashian’s actions that caused global hatred for her because she edited footage to make Taylor look bad
