Celebrity obsession.....I just don't get it....It's ridiculous IMO

News full of Taylor Swift's wedding. I mean who, other than her friends and family, should actually care. The sycophantic fawning is nauseating. What skills do these "celebrities" actually have to warrant such obsession? Are they finding a cure for diseases or working to end poverty/hunger/war? Nope. Screwed up world.

Yes it is. I don’t get it either. 🤷‍♀️

As a TS fan, I can say for many people it’s just a bit of lighthearted fun amid a world full of genocide, poverty and inequality. They even donated $26 million to charities ahead of the wedding so it’s had a positive impact. People are such buzz kills. The real question is why are you so angry people are enjoying something that doesn’t harm you at all?

user233675892 · 04/07/2026 16:18

Hardly anyone noticed when William and Kate got married. Really there was barely a word about it, right? And at least Taylor Swift has got somewhere through hard work and a level of talent rather than just... being born.

It's not really generally my thing, but as @raisinglittlepeople12 said, it's a tough old world at the moment. So what if people are enjoying it?

RaraRachael · 04/07/2026 16:18

I grew up in the 70s and could never understand young girls going to concerts by the likes of the Osmonds and screaming all the way through it.

I go to concerts to listen to the music.

I don't get the Taylor Swift obsession or what makes some people superstars over other equally talented singers/songwriters.

I am not obsessed with Taylor Swift - I have never bought one of her records or been to one of her shows.

But she seems like a lovely lass, her chap is a good guy and the pair of them are a huge power couple, both famous in their own rights. People are interested and that doesn't make it "ridiculous".

Totally agree!

hugasaurus · 04/07/2026 16:19

People are interested in people, it’s human nature.

Sounds a bit mental to me.

I mean i wasn't being serious but that is fair you think that considering your post! What do you enjoy for entertainment and fun ?

I live very near Jane Mcdonald ( no way near as famous as Taylor Swift).. the amount of people just coming to stand outside her house.. or to visit the City to have a photo taken with her plaque... they visit the home she grew up in and even the schools she went to. .. l mean l love going to concerts.. but l have not been obsessed with anyone scince l was 14 and in love with Donny Osmond.

God I love Jane. She’s an icon. A goddess. I know all about her life, her late mum Queen Jane, Henrik, her beloved late Ed, her bestie Sue Ravey.
Do not tell me where she lives 🤣

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 04/07/2026 16:22

I may enjoy a musician's work, an actor's performances, an artist's paintings. I may buy all their albums, see all their plays, buy some of their prints.

I have never understood the idolisation of the actual person, though, or the need to know any detail of their lives. It's the idolisation of celebrity that has brought us influencers and programmes like Love Island where people want wealth and fame without the need for any talent whatsoever.

FaceIt · 04/07/2026 16:23

I don’t get it either and never have done.

hugasaurus · 04/07/2026 16:24

And celebrity culture is nothing new. It’s just the stage on which people are known is way bigger than ever before. A thousand years ago it might have been the sordid lives of monarchs, painters, writers, poets - gossip has always been human currency, just on a smaller scale. People would turn out in their thousands for royal weddings, hangings, all that sort of fun back then. So at least we’ve got rid of the hangings!

MyArtfulGreySloth · 04/07/2026 16:25

This isn’t a new thing. There have been celebrities for hundreds of years 🙄

TheWelshposter · 04/07/2026 16:25

I heard a woman being interviewed who was standing on the street for hours hoping to see Taylor, beside herself with excitement. She said she had been waiting for this day for 20 years.

Berlinlover · 04/07/2026 16:27

I just can’t understand why they’re getting married, they’re going to end up divorcing anyway.

Really? this has blown my mind a bit - I mean she is Z list

This would make an excellent cross stitch

Learn something new every day

According to this thread, I am an Old Swiftonian! I have loved her since the beginning of her career. The music, the songwriting, the artistry means more to me than I could ever express in words. She probably can, but I can't 😂

I was genuinely surprised that it was on the news. I don't get it either.

I hope they had a brilliant time. I hope they get to keep as much of it to themselves as they want to.

She’s much, much higher than z-list, and does a good concert.

Must admit, I did walk to where Freddie Mercury used to live (years after his death). A pleasant walk through Kensington.

firstofallimadelight · 04/07/2026 16:39

I really like her music and think she’s a great musician/performer. She works hard , she’s creative and talented. I think the amount singers/actors/ footballers/ceos earn is mental and I don’t agree with it but there’s no reason she shouldn’t earn her worth like everyone else does. She also gives a hell
of a lot away to charity.
im interested in their wedding in the same way i have some interest in other famous people i like, id say that’s fairly normal to be interested in some of the people in the public eye. Obviously some people take it further and have an invested interest but thats always been the case right back to beatlemania and elvis fans etc . It’s just that we have easier access nowadays with sm.

Freddie Mercury and Jane McDonald are not even in the same stratosphere in my opinion

(soz Jane)

Charlize43 · 04/07/2026 16:49

It's not so much that people are obsessed with her, but her management will probably be trying to make a lot of money from this by filming & photographing it and selling it to media outlets. Guest will have been informed that there will be extensive media coverage and will have been asked to sign a release. Most celebrities are hugely narcissistic and obsessed with exposure. For a lot of them it will be the opportunity to dress up and do a photoshoot, even if they don't give a shift about Taylor Swift. Fame & Celebrity are very shallow and most are out for their own. I've worked with celebrities and their level of self-obsession is off the scale.

In short, they have monetised it.

LupaMoonhowl · 04/07/2026 16:55

Completely agree. I really like TS music and she is hugely talented and generous to the people who work for her -am impressive person. But… the sleb adulation is ridiculous. I had no idea (nor care) that she is getting married, but even on here today on a serious and level headed politics thread someone decided to derail the discussion to fan-girl over TS wedding! Utterly nuts!

Ileithyia · 04/07/2026 16:59

I think Taylor Swift is a great singer/songwriter/performer, she contributes to every city she tours in, pays her workers very well and speaks out against Trump. You don’t have to like her music to understand why so many people are fans of hers.

What I don’t understand is adulation of celebs like the Kardashians, or Molly-Mae. Reality ‘stars’ that are vacuous and contribute nothing.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 04/07/2026 17:00

There has always been a celebrity culture but I think our current fragmented lifestyles and separation from family that has made people lonelier than ever means that we search for contact and 'family' wherever we can find it. People feel as though they know celebrities and it gives rise to a sense of belonging that might otherwise be lacking.

Unless it gets out of hand and turns into obsession or stalking, it does no harm and it brings some joy into people's lives, and we can always do with more of that.
