providing lunch for builders?

we’ve got builders in for three weeks replacing a kitchen.
We’ve set them up with a kettle and coffee/sugar/tea bags/milk and biscuits. There are three or four of them.
They’ve just asked my husband for lunch/ sandwiches. Is this the done thing; the expected thing?

cheeky fuckers - even more ridiculous that they are ripping out your kitchen. Where are they expecting the catering to come from exactly? I’d offer them a bag of crisps.

My son is a builder and him and his lad repointed our house a few weeks ago and we didnt even provide him with lunch!! We did them bacon rolls a couple of times and got pizzas in once but they certainly didnt expect us to feed them.

dontcallmelen · 29/06/2026 18:47

Never had trades people asking for lunch, always leave tea/coffee facilities plus plenty of biscuits so can help themselves plus cold drinks if it’s hot lolly’s etc if I had trades working for a few weeks I used to do bacon butties on a Friday.

Strawberrryfields · 29/06/2026 18:49

Are you sure they weren’t joking?! Tea, coffee, water, the odd biscuit is fine.
I’d let them put sandwiches in the fridge if they wanted or use the microwave. But I’m a customer not a caterer!

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 29/06/2026 18:50

I did make my odd job man a toasted sandwich every day (for 3-4 weeks) and I felt I couldn't stop once I'd started. We are quite friendly though and have spent a couple of hours chatting. From what he said it sounds like some provide food and some don't. I wouldn't fancy making three lots of sandwiches!

Puddingwombles · 29/06/2026 18:53

No! This is not the done thing! That’s quite cheeky of them!

Citadelica · 29/06/2026 18:55

No! Cheeky buggers. They should either provide their own or nip to McDs or a local vegan cafe

WhyCantISayFork · 29/06/2026 18:59

Unless these are friends who are working significantly cheaper than standard rates, then they are CFs for asking!

momtoboys · 29/06/2026 19:00

I expected this post to say you were thinking of providing lunch to your builders and I thought that was so nice. They asked for sandwiches?? I did not expect that! what did your husband say?? LOL

rwalker · 29/06/2026 19:01

I’d presume he’s misunderstood it was an off the cuffs comment they were having a laugh and taking the piss

Viviennemary · 29/06/2026 19:03

It absolutely isn't usual. They shoukc bring their own or go out and get something. Tea and coffee and cold drinks yes. Maybe even biscuits if you're feeling generous. But sandwiches - no.

EmmaB1309 · 29/06/2026 19:15

It’s not the done thing, no!

Badbadbunny · 29/06/2026 19:17

Nope. Facility for making drinks is more than enough. They bring/buy their own food. They're taking you for fools.

Do you think they were joking as you technically have no kitchen? I have a weird sense of humour but some people just don't get my jokes either. Says she, laughing to herself 😂

vguil · 29/06/2026 15:04

thanks everyone. I’m so glad that we’re not committing a major faux pas by not providing lunch! They’ve done other work around the house for us so we know they’re reliable (don’t think they’ve asked for sandwiches before!)

You could always give them a priced menu and tell them anything they have will be taken off the bill, including the, to date, 'free' comestibles. Cheeky buggers.

AnnaQuayRules · 29/06/2026 19:20

Absolutely not! Tea and biscuits are plenty

Tell them to sling their fucking hooks!
Total chancers!

SideboobToYouToo · 29/06/2026 19:21

Are you sure they aren't joking?

Voneska · 29/06/2026 19:22

ABSOLUTELY FLIMMIN NOT!!!!! No, unless there's been a Nukliar TAttack and all the shops have blown up.if they're that cheeky they won't even be getting a biscuit.

Artything · 29/06/2026 19:23

Order in some McD's and stick GB news on and you can all have a good chunner!

Artything · 29/06/2026 19:26

Absolutely not, cheeky sods.

Hottno · 29/06/2026 19:27

Drinks and snacks ok . I only once made a round of bacon sandwiches when it was one of the builders 40th .Find it hard to imagine them asking for lunch.

AlgaeDreams · 29/06/2026 19:31

Surely they were joking?

In a stereotypical - 'ere where' s our sarnies darlin'?

Not it in a - what time is lunch served please? Manner.

I've never known it happen. I've offered food before and they've always refused and all gone back to the van to eat.

BunnyLake · 29/06/2026 19:32

No other profession expects lunch to be provided to them for free so why do these builders think it’s ok?
